DEVOSTATED Bob Casale, the guitarist and one of the founding members of American new wave band, Devo passed away last week. Bob passed away at the age of 61 due to heart failure. The news was confirmed by Bobs fellow band member and brother, Gerald: As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning, Gerald said in a statement. He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got. He was. His sudden death from conditions that lead to heart failure came as a total shock to us all.

The Boss is set to rock out in what has been called the greatest rock and roll show on earth. Youll have to be the judge of that when Brucey and the E Street Band head our way. They brought the Wrecking Ball tour (not to be confused with Miley) to Australia last year and now its our turn.

If your boss doesnt mind you a little worse for wear on Wednesday morning, its time to party up! After dominating at R&V last year, Rudimental are back for a headline gig, joined by Gorgon City and Naughty Boy. Bursting out of Londons underground in May 2012, the band has conquered the globe with chart-toppers left, right and centre.

Grammy Award-nominated artist Brian Mcknight is returning to New Zealand for one show. A singer, songwriter and producer, he has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide. With a talent that spans across nine instruments, he has seven certified Platinum albums over his career and has worked with everyone from Mariah to P.Diddy.

If you are expecting a spectacular golden statue of a panda, you may be bitterly disappointed. Music fans, however, will be more than thrilled. Berlin-based DJ Gold Panda has established himself as one of the most respected producers in electronic music. Originally from Essex, Gold Panda has been giving fans the gift of beautifully crafted electro and taking his sound international.

The first DJ to make the turntable an instrument, a pioneer of hip-hop, Platinum record selling artist and Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, the master is still recognised as a household name to this day. When he isnt performing at the Superbowl or to the Queen Of England, hes coming our way to share the love.

The Auckland Domain Wintergarden is the perfect venue for a sultry swamp travelogue, presented by two masters of contemporary approaches to deep blues music, Tom Rodwell and Coco Davis. Expect a languid and lascivious journey through the slave roots of rhythm, the music of the Mississippi Delta, and onwards into the Caribbean. Supported by The Coco Davis Band.

Former Killing Joke roadie and A&R scout for EG Records, now quartercentury cornerstone of electronic supergroup The Orb, Dr Alex Paterson is appearing at Meow in his DJ guise as The Orb Sound System for one night. Coming off the back of their set at Splore 2014, this show is the southern-most end of The Orb`s 25th Anniversary World Tour.

A project, labour of love, construction for your aural pleasure, their celebrated electro-organic sessions have crystallised into a new album with a wide emotional spectrum, drawing on trip-hop, quirky grooves, and chanson. All shows start at dusk, featuring the magical live-art projections of Lupavision; a hypnotic aesthetic, delivering a dynamic journey through circus, freedom, and cross-cultural identity.

Believe it or not, these guys actually eclipsed Lorde in the album charts. A sold-out show at the Auckland Town Hall in October 2012 was an early indication of the talent and popularity of the Samoan trio from Auckland, made up of tenor brothers Pene and Amitai Pati and their baritone cousin Moses Mackay.

This weeks instalment will introduce fans to the Kremp family, the prim and proper neighbours of everyones favourite 1980s family. And just like nearly everything about the retro series, the Kremps are based on actual people - they were series creator Adam F. Goldbergs real-life neighbours growing up, and their son Chad is his best friend.

FILM OF THE WEEK

FRI 28 FEB

LONE SURVIVOR Too often tales of the US war on terrorism lend themselves to overacting, all-American bravado and distinct sense that youre being sold yet another form of political propaganda. And at first glance, Lone Survivor appears no different - but behind the bombs and bullets lies a human story of the brotherhood that forms between soldiers. Directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights), the movie is based on former Navy Seal Marcus Luttrells recount of Seal Team 10s failed mission, Operation Red Wings, to capture and kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah in June 2005. As the titled suggests, this isnt a film with a happy ending, with Marcus (Mark Wahlberg) left fighting for his life after a wrong turn in the Afghanistan mountains puts the Seals in the middle of a bloodbath. Shaky cams and extreme close ups take the viewer up front and centre into the action - following the men every step of the way as they scramble through steep terrain and dense forestry against an unknown squad of Taliban. Its nail-

biting stuff as you really feel each shot, scratch and severed limb. The story itself is rather straightforward, but its the acting that makes this a strong film. Wahlberg delivers a performance that surpasses any of his stereotypical Boston street tough roles, conveying a lot of emotional distress while saying very little. Taylor Kitsch and Emile Hirsch give exceptional supporting performances that show how far they have come, while Ben Foster continues to impress in the quiet, brooding roles hes become linked to later in his career. Together, their individual strengths give this depth and as the RIPs appear onscreen during the credits, you really do feel like that could have been your dad/ brother/husband. Skipping the Stars and Stripes clichs that are often linked with US war films; this is one that shows both sides of the story in a neverending struggle.

ST. VINCENT
ST. VINCENT

St. Vincents brave, tense, jittery self-titled album is a noble step forward. As is the case with anything in her catalogue, this is a big challenge for the listener; albeit one that reaps very strange, wonderful rewards. Ever since 2009s Actor, I have been intrigued as to how Annie Clarks skewed guitar pop would evolve. Strange Mercy was a fully realised effort, equal parts bruise and beauty, whilst 2012 birthed a very natural sounding collaboration with David Byrne. A legendary risk taker himself, Byrne has obviously imposed on Clarks bittersweet sound, the broken bounce of opener Rattlesnake and the jagged single Birth in Reverse being the obvious examples. A sexy, multi-layered revelation, Digital Witness is by far the best, most appealing track for the unconverted, utilizing the horn stabs that made Love This Giant so unique. St. Vincent acts like a landmine. Everything sounds pleasant, a verse with an innocent melody reels you in, and youre along for the ride, then suddenly blown to pieces. The guitars, so fuzzy and processed, attack like an orchestra of

wasps. The soundscapes are often disconcerting and unsettling, hardly ever soothing. For most of the album, there is a dirty, funky groove slithering on its belly. Take Huey Newton as an example, as catchy as Cruel and as brutal as Marrow in its second half the very idea of Clark an attractive, waif-like woman, creating alternative, damned near ugly music has been flipped on St. Vincent. Now adopting a greyish, Einsteinian hairdo, Clarks appearance is now one with her aural eccentricity. She sounds comfortable here, simultaneously smashing out a classic on the stellar I Prefer Your Love. The only breather on the album, Clark ruminates on the conflict between love and religion in a wry, cold fashion. Its a startling song, the instrumentation evoking warm embrace. Every Tear Disappears is another high point in her writing, as is the terse Prince Johnny. Though this isnt her best album, its an amazing progression. Ask yourself: Who else is doing this? Im intrigued by this strange, wonderful woman. Challenge yourself and listen to St. Vincent.

NEW YORK DELI

363 LINCOLN RD, ADDINGTON
CHRISTCHURCH

MOTEL BAR
LVL 1/4 FORRESTERS LN, TE ARO
WELLINGTON

New York-style deliciousness comes to Christchurch! But although the inspiration comes from a far off place, they source their ingredients far closer to home. Its all local produce in between the bagels, but they stacked the sandwiches so high that the team started referring to them as New York style - which is where the theme began. The first sandwich created was the Bronx Beef; a delicious piece of steak roasted and served with onion jam and horseradish sauce, followed by the New York Pork and the Chicken SoHo.

As Pitbull famously sang, Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn. You know what happens in those motel rooms, and in every room is a seedy or seductive story to be told. Hidden in a quiet alleyway off Tory Street is where you will find this oneof-a-kind venue. Look out for the discrete wooden door, but be wary because anything can happen if you turn the wrong way too early like, youll end up in the burger place next door. Ring the white doorbell and wait for the buzz. Gently pull on the handle and follow the stairs to where the world of Motel awaits.

No doubt you have seen their zesty logo hanging about on the shelves of your local specialty store. But did you know they have a wonderful deli that can put together gift baskets, give you recipe ideas, and help you make takeaway night a little more exciting.

Encouraging leisurely engagements with the comprehensive wine list. The small-plates style cuisine makes the most of the exotic produce from their Didas Food Store and the superb skills of the talented culinary team, who work hard to pair perfect morsels with local and imported wines.

Give them an inch, theyll take a mile? Well whatever the saying, Inch Bar is the place to be if youre local for a local spot in North East Valley. An after work drink, or a quick pit stop on the way into town, this is your spot. NEV locals, its on your doorstep and a cosy spot for good company.

Gaming
MUSIC-DRIVEN FPS FROM THE CREATORS OF ROCK BAND ANNOUNCED Harmonix Music Systems (better known simply as Harmonix), the creators of the Guitar Hero, Dance Central, and Rock Band franchises, have announced Chroma - a new, music-driven first-person shooter the company is co-developing with Hidden Path Entertainment (Defense Grid, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.) Completely reimagining the classic Arena FPS formula, Harmonix explained, Chroma infuses fast-paced PC shooter action with music-driven gameplay. Join the fight as a Fader, a musical icon of the future, and battle for control of the all-encompassing cultural feed known as The Signal. Unleash streams of sound and music with your arsenal and bring the musical landscape to life in battle! Master multiple classes, each with their own unique musical gameplay mechanics and perks, and lead your team to victory. Its not a game about human suffering, a Harmonix rep told Kotakus Stephen Totilo. Its a game about music.

FABLE ANNIVERSARY
XBOX 360 EXCLUSIVE

Remember 2004? Facebook launched, the Athens Olympics opened, George W Bush gained his second term in office, and Franz Ferdinands Take Me Out was top of the Triple J charts in the middle of all of that, Fable hit retail. Now, ten years in the future, Fable Anniversary has been released. Replaying Fable on the Xbox 360 reminds you how much the original was innovative and at the same time, how far games have come since. Your heros appearance and experience is altered by his choices, an idea that designer Peter Molyneux loves. Since Fable, this mechanic has shown up in literally hundreds of RPGs. What Fable didnt have back in 2004 was any ability to change your character yourself. In game, you can find new hair and beard options and some tattoos, but really thats it. Its funny that we now expect a character creation screen. For those who have never played Fable, you take the role of a young boy, the sole survivor of your village. Youll be trained and sent into the world, learning secrets about your true calling. Fable wasnt the first third person, epic RPG but its story still stands up today in a world of Mass Effects. Combat is real time and pretty simple. Each bad guy you defeat drops XP in the form of glowing balls that youll need to collect. You can choose to upgrade your hero in various ways that boil down to fighter, archer, or spellcaster types. You can mix these up a little to create your own character over the course of the game. While the game falls short of Molyneuxs grand vision (a real life inside of a role playing game), it does allow for you to do a lot of things that other games dont. You can get married, buy a house, and do things like fart, belch, and kosack dance to change how NPCs react to you. If you want to relive the experience you loved ten years ago, get this game, but prepare to feel that crushing weight of nostalgia. As a side note, Star Wars Battlefront was also released in 2004, can we have an HD re-release of that, please?
HADYN GREEN

POKMON RUBY/SAPPHIRE SOUNDTRACK NOW ON ITUNES The Pokmon Company, publishers of the ongoing series of Pokmon role-playing games, have recently released Pokmon Ruby & Pokmon Sapphire: Super Music Collection on iTunes. The 109-track album includes songs like Opening Movie: Setting Out, Battle! (Trainer Battle), and The Elite Four Appear!, each of which are available separately (for $1.79 each) or as part of the $18.99 collection. The album is the fourth in the series, joining Pokmon X & Pokmon Y: Super Music Collection, Pokmon HeartGold & Pokmon SoulSilver: Super Music Collection, and Pokmon FireRed & Pokmon LeafGreen: Super Music Collection, which started appearing on iTunes in November last year.

The Coen Brothers

It was incredibly emotional, I really fell in love with them as people. Theyre incredibly generous and shared with me stories of the great actors theyve worked with, of their thoughts about directing, about art, and about life, Oscar Isaac. The affably geeky Ethan and the suaver Joel were accompanied by debuting lead Isaac and longtime hilarious muse John Goodman, for their group media activities around Inside Llewyn Davis New York Film Festival premiere. Korean master Park Chanwook is another supporter: I love the Coen brothers work. They are inspirational, he told me at the Big Screen Symposium. Overall, I love the Coens work, too. Cinema like No Country For Old Men and The Man Who Wasnt ThereJames Gandolfinis best non Sopranos role inspire me to stay in this crazy game. Comedies like Burn After Reading and The Big Lebowski Walter (Goodman) being spectacularly incompetent at the end, the incredible Phillip Seymour Hoffman playing a square butlermake me laugh like a hyena. I enjoyed seeing Ethans first full-length play, Women or Nothing, downtown New York. Its somewhat slight, and the central plot conceitabout lesbians gulling a man into impregnating one of themis rickety. But theres a generous serve of witty dialogue, including sharp dissing of New Yorks counselling industry. You dont even get the proverb. I did [sing songs] internally, Goodman, who plays a junkie jazzman, quips. My interior monologue was scored. Its Inside Llewyn Davis, 1960s New York music, the Coens in their own words, Im far from home to hear. John Goodman was a Siren? JOHN GOODMAN: I thought that was understood. All must work harder. ETHAN COEN (EC): Johns last couple of movies with us have been Homeric things. We kind of thought about it as an odyssey in which the main character doesnt go anywhere. Why John? EC: Uh [laughs] we just knew that John would understand it. Also, John turned us onto Charles Portis, the novelist who wrote True Grit, but his other novels were contemporary. All his novels have an old, gasbag character kind of like Johns character in the movie, so How do you pick your subject? JOEL COEN (JC): Well, the success movies have been done, havent they? Its less interesting from a story point-of-view, I think. In fact, I dont even know how we would start to think about that one. How do we pick our subjects? Could you expand? JC: I dont know. In a way its an unanswerable question. You just have an idea. I can tell you what we were thinking about or reading or the things that stimulated interest or whatever goes on in terms of, Okay, what if there is a story set here? At a certain point we literally thought, All right, Dave Van Ronk gets beat up outside of Gerdes Folk City. Who would beat up a folksinger? Its another good question. And why? We just thought, Does that go anywhere? T-Bone Burnett? EC: T-Bone was the first person we sent the script to

22

GROOVEGUIDE.CO.NZ

when we were finished with it so that conversation just started basically as soon as were done with the script. Bob Dylan? JC: Thats a big subject and it goes to the heart of what folk music is in a way. The cultural moment youre talking about was specifically on our mind when we were thinking about the story because we wanted to do something that was set in the scene before Dylan showed up, specifically. Setting? JC: Its hard for us to imagine stories abstracted or divorced from a very specific locale. Weve listened to a lot of the music and we were interested. We read a number of books, including a memoir that was written by Dave Van Ronk about that period. That had got us thinking about it; that was one of things that stimulated it. EC: I was thinking about the scene itself, maybe

that got us going. But then theres this character who seems to fit in that scene, in as much as his concerns are his tortured relationship to success and the whole idea. You asked about making new crap out of the old crap - those are both things that are concerns of characters in that scene: not wanting to sell out, but wanting to perform and reach people and also the authenticity thing. Authenticity? EC: Yes. That was a hallmark of the scene, the conflicted worship of authenticity, and the conflicted desire to have some sort of success. The Justin Timberlake character [Jim] is the more commercial side, and he is the person who presumably wants to be more authentic, but also wants to be represented by Murray Abraham. Its a conflicted, tortured relationship with success, that was a hallmark of the sceneand not just that scene, but the 1960s.

Atmosphere? EC: Yeah, so we were kind of fighting the oncoming green to keep the bleakness. Actually, in some of the shots its mostly supplied snow, you think about New York in the winter, you dont want to see it in the summer when its green. Basically the cover of Freewheeling Bob Dylan is kind of the look thats that lookand the weather is part of that. The cat? EC: As Joel has said, we realised near the beginning that we were making a movie about a character that wasnt really going anywhere and nothing particularly interesting happened to, so we thought, well give him a cat [Applause]. Redemption, absence? EC: Even the place we leave him in, he is in a sense sort of on a hamster wheel. Is he redeemed? Is it a good hamster wheel or a bad hamster wheel? I dont know.

Your motivation? JC: Were on a hamster wheel too [laughs]. We do what we do, and it is like Ethan was saying, theres a good hamster wheel and a bad hamster wheel. I dont know, but were on it. Coerced by producers? JC: No, were very lucky in that respect. How? JC: Weve always had that, were just incredibly lucky. Weve had that from the beginning. Its like we totally stepped in shit, because from the beginning weve been able to control our own stuff.

THREE OF THE BEST: VIDEOGAME SOUNDTRACKS

> EVENT TRANSPORT

FINAL FANTASY VI (SNES) Legendary videogame composer Nobuo Uematsu said he was so satisfied with the final score for 1994s FFVI that he could quit music with no regrets. By 2010 the games soundtrack alone had sold over 175,000 copies, and been interpreted by numerous symphony orchestras - as well as Uematsus own prog metal band. Despite the fact that he was limited by the power of the console, Uematsu still managed to create a sweeping, epic soundtrack which many consider to be his best. The technical limitations of the system required greater creativity to work within their confines, and as he did so Uematsu elevated the nascent art form and gave it a structural language still in use today.

time periods of the game. Co-written by Yanusori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu, the soundtrack spanned three entire discs in its 1995 pressing, and has inspired countless interpretations, from hip hop to orchestras to acid jazz.

CHRONO TRIGGER (SNES) While hip-hop has a long history of sampling from games - from Super Mario to Tetris and Castlevania - Chrono Trigger has proven especially popular. Producer 2 Mello mixed it with Jay-Z, Dom Kennedy used Secret of the Forest in Locals Only, and Wiz Khalifa sampled Scalas Theme in Never Been. The music of Chrono Trigger hits hard with nostalgia, and beautifully reflects the diverse environments and

JOURNEY (PS3) The short but brilliant Journey emphasized aesthetics above all else, a major reason for its stunning soundtrack. Journeys music has been compared to Clint Mansells work on The Fountain, and in 2012 it became the first videogame score to be nominated for a Grammy, placing Austin Wintory up against the likes of John Williams, Howard Shore and Trent Reznor. A mix of cello and ambient electronica form the backbone of the music, with elements of viola, woodwind and drums thrown into the mix. Melodious, haunting and highly atmospheric, it works as a part of the games story, as the character you play doesnt speak, and represents the shifting landscape of the game as it moves between sand and snow. Wintory used the cello to undergo a metamorphosis that exactly mirrors what the player is going through.

through the recording and producing process. Despite having no experience producing albums he helmed the production role of the record as part of having it sound exactly as they wanted it to. Id been playing around for about five years and learning the craft. Hes charmingly nonchalant. I did it because I thought there were endless possibilities that come with it for us 50% of the song is production and it has to have impact or atmosphere. Over all the album is uncompromising and thats an aspect of the process that Bagshaw treasured, so much so the immediate plan is to self produce all of their albums. Theres going to be a self producing aspect to everything that we do. Its hard to let go of the reigns. As well as being self-produced it was also recorded at home, but by no means in a decked out home studio. Nonetheless, Bagshaw says that theyre happy with all the decisions they made (both songwriting and production) though there are some hidden sounds.Theres no romance to it [recording at home] unless youre a punk band. I hope people dont hear the discrepancies, and mistakes here and there. They arent major but in theres a hoover in the background or a hum at the beginning of the song trying to get the pitch right. Thats not to say the album tends towards the DIY ethos - its clean and the production (other than Bagshaws self confessed mistakes) leaves nothing to be desired. If anything it follows the ethos of Bagshaw and Warmsleys mutual love for mysticism. It was a driving point behind the album, to make the listener feel and experience. Whether you get it from films or from imagery or from literature. Or its stark or bold or vivid or grand and spiritual it makes you feel or something. Like a painting where you can see something different every time you look at it. Theres no better way to describe the album and while it may take one or two listens to find its groove, Temples have achieved all that they set out to achieve.

Temples
You can put a man in a temple and give him three people for eternity. In return hell offer, love, comedy and melancholy (not a stark contrast to his music). The man is Temples lead singer and guitarist James Bagshaw. His three: My girlfriend: because I love her. And thats so cheesy. Woody Allen: because it would make me feel better because I wouldnt be as glum as he is. Karl Pilkington: hes a comedian and it would be great because it wouldnt all be involved with music. Mix in Allens satire and the concession that he might bring along his clarinet or trumpet or whatever it is and Bagshaw has sent himself quite the eternal company. For a man that began in a hairdressers because it meant [he] could get more product for [his] hair to make it more crazy the idea of eternity in a temple probably seemed as unlikely as garnering the initial response to their debut single Shelter Song. The track was home produced (as was their album Sun Structures) and right from the outset it found fans in the Rolling Stones - who theyve already opened for -, Noel Gallagher and Johnny Marr (of The Smiths fame). Long before the debut was recorded the waterfall effect of Shelter Song led to requests for shows before the band were, well, a band. Bagshaw and bassist and co-founder Thomas Warmsley pulled together in the final components and set to work on the next step. Bagshaw is calm, even dismissive, when he talks about the pressure that having Gallagher and the Stones as fans could bring. We had a strong idea of what we wanted and we didnt have any writing droughts I think there would have been more pressure if wed only released an EP and not a whole record with all of these songs. Bagshaws a deep thinker and theres a moment of thoughtful silence between each of his answers. Its unsurprising given the complexity of the album. We didnt want to repeat song structures. Weve lived with the album and weve listened to it painstakingly to get how we want it we didnt want the songs to be extensions of each other and we wanted it to have a timeless quality. Songwriting is a laborious process but Bagshaw makes it sound as though theres a better chance of burning toast than getting a song terribly wrong. Its an instinctive process. We dont have a demo stage, the idea goes along as it grows. Often 95% of whats on the record is the first idea and the conception of the song. Bagshaws instinct guided the band
