ABOUT FILM:
A film is a story conveyed with moving image. It is produced by recording photographic images with
cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects.
For over a century now, film in its various forms has become an essential part of our life. Motion
pictures developed gradually as one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment, and
mass media in the 20th century. Motion picture films have had a substantial impact on the arts, technology,
and politics. Medium of the film is not based on the single art form; it is the total outcome of different art
form like music dance, writing acting, architecture etc...

a phenomenon called persistence of vision.
•By the 1880s the development of the motion picture camera
•Talking pictures” or talkies.
•Next major step in the development of cinema was the introduction of so-called "natural" color.
•Animated movies.
•3-D movies.

PROJECT BRIEF :
The design problem is a film and television institute which provides the professional training in the various
disciplines of film & TV direction, cinematography, editing, acting, art direction, computer graphics
&animation. Intensive training, both theoretical and practical would be imparted to students of various
courses. The Institute is equipped with sophisticated sound recording equipments, editing machines and
modern movie cameras.

AIM OF THE THESIS:

•The aim of my thesis is to get new kind of exposure, trying out new things.
•Understand the complete working of film institute & to incorporate with architecture.

AIM OF THE PROJECT

Spirit of creativity should be all around in the campus, giving up the spark to the students.
Providing different mood to the students architecturally because this the demand of their profession, film
line is the field of different expressions.
Giving the ambience to the students which promote the skill development of film students.
To evolve a multi functional (acting, direction, screenwriting, editing, animation, film & television,
cinematography and sound recording) institute based on mixed use zoning to ensure the variety of spatial
and visual experience.
To play with design form, color and materials like stone, glass, etc for external & internal finishes as per
demand of shooting.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

• An understanding of the concept, criteria and the planning strategies that go with the efficient designing of
the project.
•Study different film institute buildings and the space standards that constitute it.
•A firsthand knowledge of the firm structural planning and method of handling various services.
•To make best possible interaction between different types of areas for different purposes where all these
areas are directed towards a common motive of learning and creativity.

LIMITATIONS:

•The thesis will offer the architectural details only and not the technical engineering details.
•No residential block will be designed either for students or faculty quarters.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT:

In other fields art is generally the result of the effort of a single individual, but a motion picture is the
outcome of cumulative efforts of a group of people. As many as 276 trades and crafts are involved in the
process of movie making, therefore for a good end result; there is a need for training people in detached
atmosphere of an academic institution.
There is a strong feeling that no person be trained for any particular art; he or she will have the
necessary spark within himself or herself to become an artist. But the need, for systematic training, even in
the creative field, has slowly made people accepting the concept of formal training.

JAIPUR:
•Jaipur, also popularly known as the 'Pink City', is the capital and the largest city of the Indian state of
Rajasthan.
•Jaipur is one of the finest planned cities of India, located in the semi-desert lands of Rajasthan. The city
which once had been the capital of the royalty now is the capital city of Rajasthan.
•It was founded on 18 November 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber.
• Here the past comes alive in magnificent forts and palaces, blushed pink, where once lived the maharajas.
•The city today has a population of 3.1 million.

PLANNING OF THE CITY

•Jaipur has been laid according to the conventional nine-grid pattern that astrologers believe to be lucky, and
which has been recommended in the ancient Indian treatise on architecture.
• Each grid consists of a square, and these have been planned so that, at the heart of the city is the City
Palace.
Straight, wide roads run through the city
• Once it was bounded by a high thick defence wall with seven gateways that served as entry points but at
present these walls have been demolished.
• Jaipur has some big and famous areas in India like Mansarovar, Vaishali Nagar, Sanganer, Jhotwara, Amba-
Bari, Raja Park etc.

SITE INFORMATION

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
-The site is primarily barren, flat chunk of land,
no remarkable features are evident.

SIZE AND AREA:

Site is almost rectangular in shape with 1/4 chunk
of land cut from South-West corner.
Area of the site is 13 acres.

SOIL TYPE:
The soil on site is Sandy clay soil. This type of soil
is blackish, grayish or dark brown in color, having
medium to heavy texture. The soil is less porous but
highly fertile with almost balanced macro and
micro-nutrients.

WATER TABLE:
Depth of water table varies from 20m-40m.

VEGETATION:
There are mostly Babool, Neem and kekar trees at
the periphery of site.

SLOPE ANALYSIS:
my site is more or less flat, hence slope of the site
is zero.

WATER LINE:
Due to site being in the out-skirts of Jaipur city, water line is still not there. The closest building nearby,
Laxmi Narain mittal institute of technology is some 100 M away from the site, it utilizes its own ground
water resources by bore wells etc.

SEWAGE DISPOSAL:
As of now no proper means of sewage disposal has provided in the area. Aditya birla MSW processing plant
is located near site

ELECTRICITY:
No overhead electrical lines pass through the site. Electric lines and poles are along the road.

SEISMIC ZONE:
Jaipur city comes under zone-ii i.e., low damage risk zone. Which implies that that these earthquakes are
frightening but do not endanger much life and property. Hence the buildings need to be designed to bear
maximum 6 magnitudes of earthquakes. The last major earthquake that hit the area nearest to the site was
Thar Desert earthquake of 1906.

INFERENCES

- The site is almost barren, hence it can be used to the best advantage on my own free will.
- A few neem, babool and kikar trees present on the periphery of the site, are to be retained.
-Site has no restrictions as it is a vacant chunk of land, hence no constraints will be applicable except for the
building bye-laws.
-The site being in hot and dry climatic zone, retention of water will be an important thing that needs to be
taken care of.
-Landscaping is helpful in doing so.
-Also proper landscaping is needed for outdoor shooting purposes.
-Site is surrounded on the three sides by road hence provisions for separate entry and service entry would be
easy.
-Soil of the area is fertile, so landscaping would be easier.
-Soil bearing capacity is good, hence Spread foundation can be provided.

CLIMATE STUDY INFERENCES

•Building should be oriented along East-West axis, with larger dimensions facing
North-South direction. to avoid maximum south sun and capture cool breeze.

•Openings with jaalies should be provided and buffer

spaces should be present just before the main walls

•Maximum openings towards the courtyard as it provides

comparatively cooler breezes than the ones
on the exteriors.

•Cavity walls and roofings should be provided to give

maximum insulation from heat and heavy materials
like stone etc should be used.

Closely placed building in clusters with common walls,

mutual shading through staggered planning and levels.

•Enclosed, compactly planned, inward looking

building movement through corridors in the
interiors next to shaded courtyards.

Usage of trees should be done so as to act as a barrier

against the winds so that it can absorb the heat and deviate
the air inside openings

•Avoidance of hard surfaces such as concrete pavements
instead use of grass so that it can minimize the re radiation
of heat as well as absorb it.

• Minimum and small openings should be provided just below

the ceiling as hot air rises up and cool air sinks down.

•Water body should be provided in the

courtyard to facilitate evaporative cooling as
it gives a low pressure area and the area
should be shaded as a result cool breezes
pass via windows in the interiors.

•Solid ground floor should be there, cantilevered surfaces should be avoided.

PLANNING AND ZONING:
•It is not a campus but is one structure as a whole.
•The structure is divided in 4 blocks, namely-
A. Administration
B. Auditorium and multi-purpose hall
C. Academic
D. Recreational/Post production.
•Whole building is based on Radial planning.
•All these blocks overlook into a courtyard, which is accessed from the ground floor level.
•The academic block again opens out into huge open space on the north side.
•Similar to FTII campus, this building is also with the East-West orientation.
Hence, the courtyard remains shaded at most of the time during working hours.

PARKING:
•The biggest drawback is that there is no specific parking provided. All the vehicles are parked in the sun
and no shade is provided.
•The two wheelers are parked on the west side, adjacent to the structure.
•Visitor's vehicles are parked along the road on the south in front of the building.

•Site should be such that it gets maximum possible industry interface.

•Students can get the benefit of the film city or film studio in the vicinity and use this facility for their
project.
•If the film institute is nearby to the film studio then maximum professionals can be called to the institute.
•Even while holding the film conventions the facilities of the nearby film city can be used.

PARKING FACILITY

•Parking is to be planned keeping in mind the number of students, administrative staff, visitors and people
coming while the convention is being held as well as for VIPs
•The parking facility should be such that vehicular traffic is stopped at the initial point of the institute itself
helping in creating some interactive spaces.

Space provided per student is approximately 4 sq.m

•Studio: 3 kinds of studios is to be provided Film studio, TV studio and multipurpose studio of an area of
400-450 sq.m

•Editing rooms: Keeping in mind the future age education editing suits should only consist of computer labs
