KUNG FU PANDA Kicks Weekend Box Office Past Last Year’s

And on the tenth weekend of 2024, box office grosses finally beat the same weekend from 2023. Universal and
DreamWorks’ KUNG FU PANDA 4 led the way in its debut, with support from openings of Lionsgate’s IMAGINARY and Angel
Studios’ CABRINI. Additional help came from a stellar second weekend for Warner Bros.’ DUNE: PART TWO. The weekend
box office for all films combined was $138.1M, compared with $120.4M for the same weekend last year when Paramount’s
SCREAM VI opened with $44.4M and MGM’s CREED III earned $27.3M in its second frame.
KUNG FU PANDA 4 finished #1 with $58.3M. This is the fourth chapter in one of the most successful animated franchises of
all time. The track record for the first three movies is quite impressive.

We expect earnings from PANDA 4
will push the series into seventh
place, passing THE INCREDIBLES,
FINDING NEMO and MADAGASCAR
to slot in just behind THE LION KING.
That would be a tremendous
accomplishment and the envy of all
other studios.
In KUNG FU PANDA 4, Jack Black and
Dustin Hoffman return as Po and
Shifu, the only two actors who have
appeared in all four films. After
surviving three earlier death-defying
adventures in which they defeated
world-class villains, Po is now called
upon to become the Spiritual Leader
of the Valley of Peace. In order to
retire, he must find a new Dragon
Warrior to take his place on the
battlefield and face off against a
powerful sorceress Chameleon. An
all-star cast is rounded out by Brian
Cranston, Awkwafina, Viola Davis and
James Hong. Reviewers have given
the movie a passable 70% critics
score on Rotten Tomatoes, a series
low, while moviegoers are more
positive with an 87% audience score.
DreamWorks is to be congratulated
for holding down produce costs for
the film without a discernable
sacrifice in quality. The final cost
came in at $85M, which is 40% lower
than the $145M spent to make KUNG
FU PANDA 3. This lower budget will
allow the film be profitable on
significantly lower grosses. Fiscal
discipline of this sort should be
enforced on most new productions,
considering the fact that moviegoing
remains lower than it was during pre-
pandemic highs and the profitability
of studios is essential to the future of
theatrical releasing.
DUNE: PART TWO had a very good
second weekend, taking second place
with $46.0M in new ticket sales and a
decline of only 44% from its record-
setting opening. After ten days,
Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel has
earned $157.0M domestic and
$284.4M worldwide, making it the
top grossing movie of the year thus
far. This already exceeds the total
earned by the first DUNE movie,
which played for 20 weeks in 2021-
2022 and finished up with $41.0M
domestic and $108.1M worldwide.
Back then, exhibitors were still
struggling to entice moviegoers to
return to their theatres while
pandemic concerns were still
lingering.
DUNE 2’s success is a validation for
everyone who supported the movie,
considering the many challenges
involved in making it and the steep
production cost of $190M. One
could make an argument that WB
should have held off on releasing the
original DUNE until a later date in
2022 or early 2023, waiting for
theatre attendance to bounce back
further from pandemic lows. This
might have allowed more moviegoers
to see DUNE in theatres, which could
have led to a larger audience primed
to see the sequel. DUNE’s theatrical
audience was also held down by
Warner Bros. choosing to release it
simultaneously on HBO Max. It has
taken only a few days for DUNE:
PART TWO to exceed DUNE’s total
box office, demonstrating the
interest of audiences to experience
DUNE’s sci-fi world on the big screen.
Lionsgate’s IMAGINARY finished in
third place in its opening weekend by
earning $10.0M. This is only the
second horror movie in wide release
so far in 2024. It joins Universal’s
NIGHT SWIM which opened on

January 5th and so far has grossed
$32.4M domestic. Last year, studios
delivered 20 horror movies for wide
release. This year, studios and
audiences are taking a much-needed
breather from the genre.
IMAGINARY’s storyline revolves
around Jessica, a successful children's
author who moves back into her
childhood home with her husband
Max and his two children. Her
youngest stepdaughter Alice finds a
stuffed bear named Chauncey in the
basement of the home. Not
surprisingly, Chauncy winds up being
not very cuddly at all. The film is
directed by Jeff Wadlow who
directed the 2018 feature TRUTH OR
DARE, which grossed $95.4M. This is
another Blumhouse production, the
same company behind two big horror
hits last year with FIVE NIGHTS AT
FREDDY’S and M3GAN. Both films
followed the Blumhouse formula of
being produced on low budgets and
generating high box office grosses.
FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S earned a
worldwide box office of $296.4M on
a budget of only $20M. M3GAN took
in $181.2M worldwide on an even
tighter budget of $12M. IMAGINARY
also cost only $12M, but results from
its first weekend put it on a lower
trajectory. It has an alarmingly low
31% critics score on Rotten
Tomatoes, leading us to believe that
it will remain in theatres only for a
few weeks. Even with a box office,
the tight budget will still allow
IMAGINARY to be profitable.
The faith-based drama CABRINI took
fourth place with $7.6M. This is the
fifth movie that the specialty
production company Angel Studios
has released in theatres, with their
first film arriving only one year ago.

Angel’s unique business model is to
raise money for its projects by
crowdfunding from its core audience
who are passionate about its morality
tales with religious themes. Last
year, SOUND OF FREEDOM shocked
the industry by becoming the ninth
highest-grossing film of 2023.
CABRINI is directed by Alejandro
Monteverde, who also directed
SOUND OF FREEDOM. The movie
tells the story of Francesca Cabrini,
the first U.S. citizen to be canonized
as a saint by the Catholic Church. The
plot follows Cabrini on her journey as
an Italian immigrant, arriving in New
York City in 1889 where she faces expectations and after so-so results
disease, crime and legions of in its opening weekend it will take a

‘Dune: Part Two’ Premium Tickets Sold Out on Opening Weekend, Says IMAX

Last weekend, DUNE: PART TWO
enjoyed the best opening weekend of
any movie in 2024, in large part due to
sold out shows in premium large
format auditoriums. In fact, an
amazing 44% of its audience
experienced the movie in PLF.
This could have been predicted,
especially since Warner Bros.’ pre-
release marketing emphasized that
DUNE: PART TWO was “Filmed for
IMAX.” Because there is a somewhat
limited supply of IMAX and other PLF
screens, opening weekend grosses
were high but capped due to sell-outs
for those desirable screenings. DUNE’s
Grosses from PLF screenings over the
course of the week and on its second
weekend remained strong.
During a call with investors on Tuesday,
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond reported that
IMAX Theatres “ran out of seats pretty
much globally.” During its opening
weekend, IMAX theatres worldwide
sold $32.2 million in tickets for DUNE:
PART TWO, which represents 18% of its
overall total. Given that IMAX has only
800 screens globally and that it had yet
to open in China or Japan, this gross
signals a clear preference by
moviegoers to see it in IMAX.
Results for DUNE2 as well as other key
special effects-laden releases such as
AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER and
OPPENHEIMER are pushing exhibitors
to create more IMAX installations.
Both DUNE movies were filmed with
IMAX cameras, which drives up
production costs dramatically.
Gelfond cited DUNE’s success as a
clear justification for studios to create
more movies using IMAX technology.
Gelfond also says that almost all IMAX
locations have locked in their release
schedule through summer 2025.

IATSE Begins Negotiations on Hollywood Basic
Agreement with Studios

Contract negotiations began this
week between the AMPTP and
IATSE, an important step in avoiding
yet another labor shutdown in
Hollywood. The IATSE represents
over 170,000 workers with
specialized skills that are essential to
the production of TV shows and
movies. First, the union presented
its opening offer to the studios,
represented by the AMPTP. The two
sides then drilled down on topics as
wide ranging as “contract
enforcement, cost of living, and
proposals to extend reasonable rest
and drastically increase penalties for
overworking.” Talks concluded at
the end of the week with the two
sides agreeing to reconvene on
March 18th after discussing current
positions with their members.
It's reassuring to see these talks
begin well before the end date the
current labor contract. This was not
the case in negotiations between
the studios and the writers’ and
actors’ unions. It appears that both
sides see the need to start early to
minimize the chances of a yet
another devastating strike.
Some members of the IATSE have
expressed concern that the strong
desire to avoid a new strike will
result in their needs being sold
short. At a rally amongst members
following the meeting, the IATSE
leaders spoke directly about these
concerns. Union President Mathew
Loeb spoke on the topic of AI, a
sticking point in last year’s
negotiations with the SAG-AFTRA
and WGA. Loeb said that IATSE
negotiators would fight to make it
that the benefits of AI accrue to the
workers first, saying that “if
efficiency comes, it needs to come
to us and our jobs.” Sean O’Brian,
President of the Teamsters Union,
said that workers were “not afraid”
to strike, and if “these greedy
corporations…choose not to
reward our members, they are
putting themselves on strike. We
will put them on their back, on
their knees, begging for mercy.”

Netflix and Disney’s Film Divisions Are Moving in Different Directions

Disney’s David Greenbaum and Netflix’s Dan Lin
Within days of each other, both Netflix and Disney named
new leaders for their respective film divisions, with David
Greenbaum replacing Sean Bailey as President of Live
Action Films at Disney and Dan Lin selected to replace
Scott Stuber as Film Chairman at Netflix. Both hires signal
a directional change at two of the most influential studios
in the industry. They don’t appear to be headed in the
same direction.
Before his new appointment, Greenbaum was in charge of
Disney’s Searchlight Pictures, the specialty studio that
Disney acquired as part of its 2019 acquisition of 20th
Century Fox. The studio was known for producing
critically-acclaimed, original titles such as THE SHAPE OF
WATER, NOMADLAND, THE FAVOURITE, THE GRAND
BUDAPEST HOTEL and this year’s POOR THINGS. This
output is in stark contrast with the work of his predecessor
in the new job, Sean Baily, who had success with live-
action remakes of THE LION KING, ALADDIN and BEAUTY
AND THE BEAST. However, the string of live-action films
has begun to show diminishing returns with THE LITTLE
MERMAID underperforming and HAUNTED MANSION
bombing outright. There is broad acknowledgement that
Disney will generate more success with original stories, and
Greenbaum has a track record of doing just that, albeit on
a much smaller scale.
Under Scott Stuber, Netflix emerged as one of the
industry’s most prolific champions of original films, with
the company releasing as many as 80 original films in a
single year. Those releases included art house favorites
such as THE IRISHMAN and ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN
FRONT and action blockbusters including RED NOTICE and
THE GRAY MAN. While those films attracted large
audiences on Netflix, they largely failed to make a cultural
impact or win Oscars, a long-held objective of Netflix CEO
Ted Sarandos. They also do not appear to have sparked
the potential for sequels. Previously, Lin has had success
creating franchises with THE LEGO MOVIE, SHERLOCK
HOLMES, GODZILLA and IT. Netflix hopes that Lin can
somehow recapture the magic of one or more blockbuster
movie franchises.

This year February was a month of contrasts at the global box
office. The Chinese market recorded its second-best month of
the decade, pushed by their very lucrative New year holidays.
The Domestic market operated on the other end. Weighed
down by a dried-out release calendar it recorded the lowest
grossing month since September 2022! The International
markets performed between those two extremes. The better
local and non-US titles were able to succeed, the smaller was the
gap to pre-pandemic results.
The global box office accumulated $3.2 billion in February,
crossing the $3 billion mark for the first time since August last
year. It’s the 5th highest grossing month overall since the turn of
the decade, performing -12% below the three-year (2017-2019)
pre-pandemic average.

The second highest grossing title of
CNY was comedy sequel PEGASUS 2
with $444 million. It already clearly
outgrossed its predecessor from 2019,
which generated $251 million. The
third highest grossing movie of the
month with $304 million was another
comedy, ARTICLE 20, directed by
legend Zhang Yimou. The latest
instalment of the long-running
animated series BOONIE BEARS
completed the quartet by earning
$260 million in February - setting an
all-time high for the franchise.
The four movies delivered a combined
box office of $1.48 billion in February,
a commanding 93% of the monthly
Chinese total of $1.59 billion. This
represented 49% of the global box
office in February. It delivered the
second best single-month result in
China since the pandemic began. Of
course, the month was competing
with February 2021, which reached
$1.72 billion – an all-time single-
month record in China - coming in just
-7% behind that and +9% ahead of the
great CNY February in 2022, the third
highest-grossing month of the decade.
Driven by another exceptional CNY,
the Chinese market is standing on par
with last year at the end of February
with a cume of $2 billion. That is +6%
ahead of the three-year pre-pandemic
average. The second best of the
tracked top 15 markets.
Conversely, the Domestic market -
limited by a sparse release calendar -
had the widest gap against the three-
year average among the top 15
markets. At the end of February, it
was at -47%. Pulled down from -43% a
month ago with February being -51%
behind. The widest gap in 17 months!
February generated just $397 million
in Domestic, bringing the cume to
$919 million at the end of the month.
That is -17% behind last year at the
same time and +21% above the period
in 2022. The obviously highest
grossing Domestic title in February
was BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE,
generating $75 million. That makes it
the second month in a row without
even one title crossing $100 million.
The last time that happened was in
August and September 2022!
The International market is a bit less
impacted by the limited release
calendar caused by the Hollywood
strike, compared to Domestic. Local
and international titles have more
space to shine in each market when
the supply of attractive US-product is
shortened. This has been proven
frequently since the pandemic
disrupted both production and release
cycles in 2020.
Consequently, in multiple top markets
local and non-US titles claimed spots
among the top title of the month. In
the Netherlands local action-comedy
COPPERS reached #1 and local rom-
com VERLIEFD OP BALI #2. In Germany
local comedy-drama from Warner
Bros EINE MILLION MINUTEN took the
top spot and with French title
AUTUMN AND THE BLACK JAGUAR #3.
In France four of the Top 5 were local
films, led by comedy COCORICO. In
South Korea local thriller EXHUMA got
the #1 spot with an impressive $26
million, leading four non-US titles in
the Top 6. In Australia local thriller
sequel FORCE OF NATURE: THE DRY 2
achieved the #2 rank within the
month. In Brazil drama sequel NOSSO
LAR 2 ranked #3 and in Mexico Japan's
newest DEMON SLAYER instalment
came in at #1 for the month.
These successes in Brazil and Mexico
were not enough to prevent Latin
America from having the weakest
month of the three sub-regions. It had
the widest gap against the three-year
average with -30% and the biggest
drop to the prior year, being -18%
down. The sub-region of Europe,
Middle East, and Africa (EMEA)
managed to be +4% ahead of February
last year. Still, being -25% short of the
pre-pandemic average for the month.
Asia Pacific (without China) was the
strongest performing sub-region. This
February it was up +13% on the same
period last year. Especially a +60%
upswing of South Korea supported
that. The gap to the three-year
average was just -15%.

The main driver of that was an
impressive +30% growth on the pre-
pandemic average by Japan in
February. That pushes the territory to
be +15% ahead on the three-year
benchmark for the running year. This
is the best of the tracked top 15
markets. Multiple successful local
releases were key to that
achievement. The newest part in the
multiple decades running MOBILE
SUIT GUNDAM franchise released at
the end of January led the way,
already becoming the highest grossing
of the franchise with a current $25.1
million cume. The theatrical finale to
the TV Series HAIKYU!! released on
February 16 grossing the second
highest opening weekend of the past
12 months with $14.9 million. Further
live action Manga adaptation GOLDEN
KAMUY was continuing playing strong
after debuting in January to a current
cume of $18 million. On top of that
the latest DEMON SLAYER release
opened February 2. While staying
behind the tremendous performance
of the prior theatrical offerings of the
franchise, it still collected a cume of
$13 million by month's close.
Despite successes like these and the
fabulous Chinese New Year results,
February was another expected
modest month. Suffering an ongoing
spare release calendar. The few global
wide releases of the month performed
around their expected limited results.
Strong local and international titles
around the world leveraged the gap in
individual markets and kept these
close to last year’s performance at the
same time. Still, it was far from
enough to continue the path of
needed growth to get back and
beyond the pre-pandemic box office
levels on a global scale. Some relief
arrived in the final days of February
with the impressive opening of the

VERDICT: Brisk, exciting, and genuinely funny, ‘Kung Fu
Panda 4’ is the highlight of this long-running franchise,
furthering the hero’s journey to enlightenment, working
wonders with its ensemble cast, and embracing the
philosophical spirit of kung fu.

The Kung Fu Panda movies aren’t all classics, but they are
all remarkable. They’ve not only resisted the urge to
deluge audiences with immediately-dated pop culture
references — the bane of 2000s animated movies,
popularized by another DreamWorks blockbuster, Shrek –
but even though every film does feature a panda fighting
bad guys with kung fu, they’ve also resisted the urge to
repeat the same story over and over again. Po, the titular
panda voiced by Jack Black, doesn’t relearn old lessons.
He continues to evolve as a character and this film series
is better for it.
Before “kung fu” became synonymous with martial arts,
the term referred to effort and discipline, the
achievement of expertise by doing hard work and
genuinely earning it. It’s not supposed to be a
superpower, it’s supposed to be a path of continuous
self-improvement. Kung Fu Panda 4 literalizes this
distinction.
