MORTAL KOMBAT
The Mortal Kombat series has
always been a controversial
video game series, with its over-
the-top violence and extremely
brutal fatalities that sees fighters
decapitating their opponents or
literally ripping them in half.
It’s brutal, it’s bloody and it’s
brilliant. Of course with any
successful video game franchise,

Hollywood will come calling
eventually and even though
the 1995 Mortal Kombat was
campy fun, it failed to capture
what makes Mortal Kombat, the
uber violence. With numerous
sequels that followed the quality
dipped faster than a Johnny
Cage low blow and it felt that
the MK series will never reach
the cinematic heights that the
gaming franchise did. However,
New Line Cinema has decided
to give the violent gaming series
another shot and to be honest, it
is actually rather brilliant in that
bad sort of way.
The story in 2021’s Mortal
Kombat is gloriously rubbish.
MMA fighter Cole Young,
accustomed to taking a beating
for money, is unaware of his
heritage or why Outworld's
Emperor Shang Tsung has sent
his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an
otherworldly Cryomancer, to
hunt Cole down. Fearing for
his family's safety, Cole goes
in search of Sonya Blade at
the direction of Jax, a Special
Forces Major who bears the
same strange dragon marking
Cole was born with. Soon, he
finds himself at the temple of
Lord Raiden, an Elder God and
the protector of Earthrealm,
who grants sanctuary to those
who bear the mark. Here, Cole
trains with experienced warriors
Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue
mercenary Kano, as he prepares
to stand with Earth’s greatest
champions against the enemies
of Outworld in a high-stakes
battle for the universe. But will
Cole be pushed hard enough to
unlock his arcana—the immense
power from within his soul—in
time to save not only his family
but to stop Outworld once and
for all?
But then who watches a Mortal
Kombat movie for the story?
It’s all about the fight scenes
and the violence of course, and
fortunately, Mortal Kombat
2021 delivers it in droves. With
expertly choreographed and
directed fight sequences, the
action scenes are a joy to behold.
And fortunately, the filmmakers
have decided not to shy away
from the violence the series is so
well known for. There are some
stomach-churning violence in
this flick, but the good kind.
It is so over the top that it is
actually funny in its filth. This is
definitely not a movie for the kids
or grandma and you can expect
to see tons of blood spilled on
the silver screen. And that is all
we ask for from a Mortal Kombat
movie. The story is garbage and
almost impossible to follow, the
acting is B-movie at best, but the
fight scenes and violence elevates
it to the top. Mortal Kombat fans
will be ecstatic with the latest
release, just don’t expect the lore
to be expanded upon.

BASED ON GAMES
For decades now, Hollywood has tried to cash in on the growing
popularity of video games, and more often than not they have
failed miserably. It’s become a running joke that movies based
on videogames are guaranteed rubbish. But just because a
movie is bad, doesn’t mean it’s not a fun watch. Here are some
of our favorite terrible video game movies.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG

The world needed a hero -- it got a hedgehog. Powered

with incredible speed, Sonic embraces his new home
on Earth -- until he accidentally knocks out the power
grid, sparking the attention of uncool evil genius Dr.
Robotnik. Now, it's supervillain vs. supersonic in an all-
out race across the globe to stop Robotnik from using
Sonic's unique power to achieve world domination.

It’s so bad, it’s good

Who can forget the day when the trailer for Sonic was
released and the internet had a meltdown over the way
Sonic looked. It was so bad that the producers of the
show had to go back to the drawing board and redesign
the Sonic character to more accurately reflect the game
design. And it honestly worked, Sonic is a fun watch for
fans of the series and for newcomers. Plus Jim Carrey’s
ridiculous over-the-top acting is a joy to behold.

 ALONE IN THE DARK

When the investigations of supernatural detective

Edward Carnby (Christian Slater) lead him to uncover
a long-lost tribe called the Abskani, he finds out that
they worshipped demons. These evil creatures are now
attempting to resurface in the world, and Edward can
stop them only with the help of Aline Cedrac (Tara
Reid), an archeologist who also happens to be his old
flame. With sinister forces attempting to take over
Edward's mind, can he and Aline stop them before it's
too late?

It’s so bad, it’s good

Firstly it has nothing to do with the actual game series,

so fans of the horror title will be disappointed, but what
you will find here is one of the lowest-ranked movies of
all time, with dreadful acting, confusing story and some
of the worst VFX we’ve seen in any movie. Director
Uwe Boll has become synonymous with terrible movies
and once again he delivered. It’s hilariously bad and you
will find yourself laughing non-stop at this sorry excuse
for a film.

MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION

Every generation, a portal opens up between the

Outerworld and Earth. Emperor Shao-Kahn (Brian
Thompson), ruler of the mythical Outerworld, pounces
the moment the portal reopens and slips through with
his mighty warriors, intent on total domination and
uniting the two worlds. However, he has only seven
days to complete his task. In the meantime, opposition
grows and warriors Sonya Blade (Sandra Hess), Jax
(Lynn "Red" Williams), Kitana (Talisa Soto) and Liu
Kang (Robin Shou) get ready for war.

It’s so bad, it’s good

The effects are terrible, the story nonexistent and

contains some of the worst acting ever, yet there is
a charm to this terrible movie. A follow up to the
relatively successful Mortal Kombat from 1995, this
sequel completely misses the point, but does allow for
some unintentional laugh-out-loud moments.

 STREET FIGHTER

Gen. Bison (Raul Julia), the evil dictator of Shadaloo,

captures a busload of relief workers and holds them
for ransom. Col. Guile (Jean-Claude Van Damme)
leads an international strike force to invade Shadaloo
and rescue the hostages. Along the way, Guile recruits
Chun-Li (Ming-Na Wen), a reporter and martial-arts
expert whose father was killed by Bison years ago, two
young con men (Damian Chapa, Byron Mann) and a
sumo wrestler (Peter Navy Tuiasosopo).

It’s so bad, it’s good

Another fighting game that Hollywood felt they needed

to put on the big screen and another massive flop. Yet
there is a certain charm to this flick, from the late, great
Raul Julia’s over-the-top acting/screaming to trying
to decipher Van Damme’s terrible accent. You have
to watch this purely for the super cheesy victory pose
right at the end.

DOOM

A team of space marines known as the Rapid Response

Tactical Squad, led by Sarge (The Rock), is sent to
a science facility on Mars after somebody reports a
security breach. There, they learn that the alert came
after a test subject, a mass murderer purposefully
injected with alien DNA, broke free and began killing
people. Dr. Grimm (Rosamund Pike), who is related
to team member Reaper (Karl Urban), informs them
all that the chromosome can mutate humans into
monsters -- and is highly infectious.

It’s so bad, it’s good

Taking the most popular first-person shooter and

putting Dwayne Johnson as the lead sounds like a
winning formula, and it is but for all the wrong reasons.
Even though there are some strong actors in Doom, the
story is nonsensical and the visual effects are as low
budget as they come. Yet the POV scenes that recreate
the feel of the game is brilliantly bad and of course, the
natural charisma of The Rock is always a winner.

 LARA CROFT - TOMB RAIDER

This live-action feature is inspired by the most successful

interactive video-game character in history -- Lara
Croft. Beautiful and brainy, Lara (Angelina Jolie) is the
heroine of Eidos Interactive's phenomenally successful
"Tomb Raider" game series. It is one woman's fearless
quest criss-crossing the globe, in an amazing attempt to
save the world.

It’s so bad, it’s good

When it was first announced that Angelina Jolie will

take the role of the infamous archaeologist, fans around
the world rejoiced. Then the movie released and it was
okay, just okay. Yet Jolie as Lara Croft still has a lot of
charm and you get to see future James Bond, Daniel
Craig, playing the role of the main baddie.

SUPER MARIO BROS

Based on the biggest gaming franchise in video game

history, Super Mario Bros sees Brooklyn plumbers
Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi (John Alberto
Leguizamo) rescue Princess Daisy from King Koopa
(Dennis Hopper) and the Goombas in a dinosaur world.

It’s so bad, it’s good

The movie that started the “movies based on

videogames are bad” trend, it still begs belief how
Hollywood messed this up. Taking a beloved franchise
known for its colorful characters and turning it into a
grungy brown palette-filled mess. Nothing makes sense
in this movie and if you will find yourself shouting
“What? Why?” at the screen every five minutes. It’s a
tough watch, but definitely recommended to see how
bad Hollywood can mess up a beloved franchise.

 Happy to have you featured on FHM!
Tell us what are some of the things you
did to prepare for this shoot? While I
was preparing for the shoot, I thought about
the kind of overall look I would want to be
the perfect image for the FHM viewers. I also
worked out daily & maintained a healthy diet.
You’ve got an amazing figure and beauty
about you, we’re keen to know what
you would say is your favorite physical
feature about yourself and why? My eyes
change color slightly in the sunlight; from dark
brown to light brown. I’ve always loved that
about my physical appearance.
Being a glamorous model must have
it’s perks, what are some of your most
memorable experiences in your career?
I honestly love every moment that I get to be
in front of the camera; it’s my passion and what
I live for. One of my favorite moments so far
was when I had the opportunity to do a sunrise
shoot on a really beautiful island with some
people that I have become good friends with in
the industry. Any time that I’m able to do what
I love, in a great environment, with awesome
people, is a win.
What would you say sets you apart? I’m
an extremely determined person, and I go for
everything that I’m passionate about with all
that I have.
On the topic of men, what were
the complete best, and worst first
impressions you’ve got on a first date?
Any time a man acts like a gentleman on a date,
it leaves a good impression. Therefore, if a guy is
disrespectful then they lose my attention right
away.

What would you say is the most
surprising thing about you that not
many people know? Growing up, I always
thought that I would become a chef. I had a
secret love for cooking and would always try to
create different recipes in the kitchen. Through
the years, my goals shifted and I ended up
becoming more passionate about modeling and
pursuing that as a career instead.
If you had to choose, would you say
money and wealth determines success,
or is it one’s personal achievements
and happiness? I believe that personal
achievements determine success - 100%.
Everyone has their own measure of what
success means to them -- for some, that might
mean wealth but for others, it may mean
something else entirely.
On a more personal level and in an ideal
world, where do you see yourself in five
or ten years; time in terms of family life,
career, or both? In about five to ten years I see
myself being an even more successful model.
2020 was a challenging year for us all,
what advice would you give to other
models or aspiring models out there in
light of all the challenges faced? 2020 was
definitely a challenging year, the advice I would
give to aspiring models out there is to never
give up, it might seem like nothing is going to
happen but if you push yourself you will get to
where you want to be.
Any final words to our readers on what
to expect from you this year? I was very
excited to shoot for FHM and am looking
forward to many more shoots to come!

you can think of. Yet, if we are to be honest, the speakers in 99% of TV’s today
are rubbish. And with sound playing such an important part in any movie or
TV show, it’s time you buy a soundbar to compliment that big TV you won.
Here are some of the eBay you can buy right now.

Sonos Beam
Sonos has been killing it in the soundbar market lately and the Sonos Beam is no
expectation. With a great compact design, it means it will fit under the majority of
TVs without being an eyesore. It offers great sound at a very competitive price and the
inclusion of HDMI ARC is a massive bonus. It’s also compatible with Amazon Alexa for
voice commands, so no need to switch your current Alexa ecosystem. Although the lack of
Dolby Atmos might be a negative for some, those looking for a great design and solid audio
performance need not look further than the Sonos Beam.

Samsung HW-Q950T
Samsung has long been a frontrunner with their soundbar offerings and with the Q950T,
they have once again outdone themselves. The sound is outstanding, offering a powerful,
rich sound regardless of what you will be pumping through them. With support for
Hi-Res Audio file formats, this soundbar will be an audiophile's dream. The Q950T offers
14 separate channels of sound and is clearly aimed at the object-based formats of Dolby
Atmos and DTS:X technologies. It is, however, extremely expensive for a soundbar and
some might struggle to justify the $600 price tag, but if you are looking for a premium
soundbar then this offering from Samsung is a clear winner.

Sony HT-X8500 Soundbar

These days Dolby Atmos support is all the rage for soundbars, and rightly so, it’s amazing
sound technology that has changed the game. Sadly, paying for Atmos support comes
with a hefty price tag. However that has changed with the X8500, Sony has delivered an
all-in-one Dolby Atmos soundbar that comes in at around half the price of other Atmos-
enabled devices. The key to the X8500’s great performance is Sony’s proprietary Vertical
Sound Engine that creates a convincing illusion of wraparound sound that allows Dolby
Atmos movies to play with a clear sense of expanded height and width. The build quality
and design are exceptional, and the audio performance is impressive. If you’re looking for
a great soundbar that offers a spatial sound that won’t make a dent in your wallet, then the
Sony HT-X8500 is a must-buy!

Sennheiser Ambeo 3D Soundbar

The famous headphone and professional microphone maker has thrown its hat into the
competitive market of home audio and has immediately made a massive impact. The
Ambeo 3D soundbar is incredible, with market-leading sound quality and Dolby Atmos
support. The soundbar is packed with the latest audio technologies, including Dolby
Atmos and DTS:X for surround sound audio, as well as Sennheiser’s own Ambeo ‘virtual
3D’ sound system. Sadly the design itself is not ideal and compared to offer models in its
price class, the Ambeo #D is quite hefty in size and weight and those looking for a sleek
minimal design might feel disappointed. The biggest hurdle many will face is the insane
price tag attached to this impressive piece of audio kit, coming in at an eye-watering $2500.
It’s hard to justify the price compared to what Sony and Samsung are offering for almost a
third of the price.

LG SK8 Soundbar
LG has long been in the soundbar game, with some impressive offerings. Yet if you’re
looking for a stylish compact design that delivers a great sound then the SK8 is perfect
for you. Coming in at $500, it’s a reasonably priced soundbar that promises Dolby Atmos
support and offers a variety of sources. The addition of an on-soundbar display and
Google Assistant compatibility make it easy to use, too. Although lacking some features
compared to other soundbars on the list, the SK8 is great value for money and a massive
improvement over any LG TV built-in speakers.

Vizio SB362An-F6 Sound Bar

If money is a bit tight yet you are looking for a quality soundbar then look no further
than the Vizio SB362An-F6. Coming in at only $140, it offers powerful sound as well as
Dolby Audio and DTS Virtual:X support. With a very clean design, this soundbar will sit
comfortably underneath the screen of most TVs, and Vizio also includes a pair of wall-
mount brackets as well. Of course at such a low price one would expect some cutbacks and
there are a few with Vizio’s offering. Sadly there is no HMDI support and the lack of an
LCD display does make operating it a tad frustrating. However if you’re looking for a cheap
soundbar that still delivers on it’s audio goodness, then the SB362An-F6 is the best choice
on the market right now.

The “MLB The Show” series has
always been seen as the premier
baseball video game, launched for
Sony Playstation 2 in 2006, it blew
all other baseball games out of the
water. Fast forward 15 years and
not much has changed, the latest
iteration of America’s favorite
pastime is still an amazing baseball
simulation, yet there is one big
change to happen to the series in
2021. It is no longer a PlayStation
exclusive, as for the first time in its
history the MLB The Show series
will appear on Xbox consoles. Will
this move to multiplatforms be a
detriment to the series or will it be
the next step to greatness for the
authentic baseball experience?
MLB The Show 21 comes packed
with brand new features that look
to improve on an already amazing
game. Road to the Show, the game's
magnificent career mode, has seen
massive improvements as well as the
ability to take your created player

and use them in other game modes.
This has been a fan request for many
years and the ability to take the
player you spent months and months
upgrading into other game modes is
a very welcome addition. Franchise
mode which sees you as the General
Manager of your favorite ball club
has also seen major improvements
that now empowers you to make
better decisions on the future of
your club. New to MLB The Show
this year is gameplay styles alongside
new gameplay onboarding tutorials
to expand gameplay for all playstyles
and skill levels. You don’t have to
be a pro to play like a pro. Casual
gameplay is an easy pick-up and play
experience with an emphasis on
learning the game and honing your
hardball skills. Of course, if you are
looking for the most authentic MLB
experience then simulation mode will
tick that box. Featuring incredibly
accurate player stats and team ratings
that reflect their real-life personas
and attributes.
The biggest overhaul in the 2021
version happens in the fielding, a
much-needed fix as fielding in the
past has always felt a bit off. The
new fielding mechanics have been
rebuilt from the ground up and now
features realistic reactions as well as
a major point of criticism in the past,
balls of the wall, as well as hundreds
of new fielding animations to take
the realism to the next level. All the
changes and additions might not
seem like a big deal on paper, but
when seeing it in action it all comes
together to deliver the ultimate
baseball experience. If you’ve always
been an Xbox gamer who wanted
to experience the magic of the MLB
The Show series then this is the
perfect jumping-in point and if you
have been a fan of the series for years,
the numerous changes and additions
to The Show 21 is more than enough
to justify the jump from last year’s
release.
Outriders
In recent years, the co-op RPG shooter
genre has become a major player on
the gaming scene, from looter shooters
like Destiny and the more medieval,
tough as nails, Warhammer: Vermintide
2. For people looking for a brand new
co-op RPG shooter experience, the
latest offering from developers People
Can Fly will definitely scratch that itch
but does this new IP truly deliver on its
promise of a premier co-op shooter or
will it be a bargain-bin buy instead?
Outriders is a 3 player co-op RPG
shooter set in an original, dark and
desperate sci-fi universe. As mankind
bleeds out in the trenches of Enoch,
you’ll create your own Outrider and
embark on a journey across the hostile
planet. With rich storytelling spanning
a diverse world, you’ll leave behind the
slums and shantytowns of the First City
and traverse forests, mountains and
desert in the pursuit of a mysterious
signal. Combining intense gunplay
with violent powers and an arsenal of
increasingly twisted weapons and gear-
sets, Outriders offers countless hours of
gameplay from one of the finest shooter
developers in the industry. Outriders’
brutal and bloody combat combines
frenetic gunplay, violent powers and
deep RPG systems to create a true
genre hybrid as you discover the hostile
planet of Enoch as you embark on a
journey to the source of a mysterious
signal. Play single-player or join up to
two friends in drop-in, drop-out co-op
as you tackle the horrors of a hyper-
evolved planet.
Create and customize your own
Outrider and choose from four unique
classes each with its own skill tree to
define your own playstyle. Customize
and upgrade your Outrider with
countless items of mod-able guns and
gear, as you leave humanity behind.
The customization might seem a
bit daunting when you initially boot
up the game, but clear progression
paths means you will be a badass,
alien-ass-kicking Outrider in no time.
Fortunately, the game will also support
full cross-play compatibility across all
formats, meaning players across PS4,
PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC
and Stadia will be able to play together
regardless of what platform they are
on. With the next-gen consoles still
incredibly rare to obtain, Outriders will
be released on last-gen consoles but if
you are one of the lucky few to own one
of the new consoles, then Outriders
offers free next-gen upgrades to
ensure you get all the next-gen goodies
absolutely free.
Outriders is definitely a fun co-op
experience and even though the single-
player option is a viable choice, the
most fun will be had with two friends
by your side. The gunplay feels solid and
the enemies offer a decent challenge.
The graphics won’t exactly blow you
away on the next-gen consoles but the
potential for 60FPS gameplay is always
enticing in a game like this. With the
release schedule rather thin for the
next few months, Outriders is sure to
offer you enough bang for your buck for
quite a few hours of gameplay. And if
you’re an Xbox owner with GamePass,
then Outriders will launch directly into
GamePass on its release day. A win-win
for everyone, well almost everyone.

Always Better With Friends
Co-op gaming has always been incredibly
popular, from the days of the arcades where
you took on your friends and strangers at
Street Fighter to the couch co-op of classics
like Mario Kart back on the SNES. But with
the arrival of the internet, co-up has moved
online and it’s not just restricted to your
friends anymore. You can play with anyone in
the world and test your skills (and patience)
against millions of people. Here are some of
the best co-op games you can play right now
(that is not Fortnite)

Portal 2
One of the older games on the list, but definitely the most fun.
Portal 2 might be known for its wonderful story-driven single-
player mode which sees you solving portal-like puzzles to escape
the evil robot that controls the test chambers. However, with the
co-op experience, you will play as two robots helping to test out
the diabolical test chambers. Not only will you and a friend, who
each control a loveable robot, have to put your heads together to
figure out how to finish a test chamber, but you’ll often have to
time your movements and actions just right. If one player jumps
a split second early, or activates a button too late, the whole plan
falls apart. It makes communication vital, and each puzzle all-
the-more rewarding to solve.

A Way Out
A truly unique take on the co-op experience and one we
wished more developers would focus on. A Way Out was a
completely story-driven, co-op-only game that saw you play
as two criminals trying to find a way out of prison. With the
game being exclusively co-op, you and your friend need to work
together closely to achieve your objective of escaping prison,
but roleplaying Prison Break wasn’t the only thing you and your
partner in crime could do together. From playing basketball to
helping each other fish to just messing about on a seesaw, A Way
Out is like no other co-op game on this list and it's one you have
to experience for yourself.

Rainbow Six Siege

From teaming up as criminals to teaming up as elite SWAT
members hell-bent on taking down the bad guys at whatever
cost. Rainbow Six Siege is best known for its tactical PVP fights,
where your job is to clear a level of terrorists as quickly and
efficiently as possible. Teamwork is the name of the game and if
you or one of your team members go rogue then the entire plan
will be compromised. You will have to revise your tactics, clear
traps and use your abilities and coordinate timings with your

The Monster Hunter series is arguably one of the biggest co-op
series ever and rightfully so. You play as a hunter that, well the
clue is in the name, hunts monsters. You’ll team up with other
hunters to take on quests to track down and kill a huge variety
of monsters in a beautifully realized world. Unlike the other
games on the list, this one will take a bit of time to get used to as
the online mechanics can be a bit confusing to new players and
the huge variety in gameplay styles and weapons might seem
overwhelming in the beginning, but stick with it and you will
discover a game unlike any other. The absolute joy of spending
hours tracking and killing a massive monster is a feeling unlike
any other.

Sea of Thieves
Who hasn’t dreamed of being a pirate at one stage in their life?
Sailing the open seas, plundering other ships and hunting for
treasure all while enjoying a cup of grog with your mates. Well,
Sea of Thieves offers that exact experience. Team up with 3 other
people and take on various quests for booty, or take down other
pirate ships and loot their treasure or just sink their ship and
send them to Davy Jones’ locker or just hunt down the mighty
Kraken and prepare for an epic sea battle. Sea of Thieves is a ton
of fun with friends and offers some truly hilarious moments.
Although the game can be played in single-player, the real joy lies
in its co-op.

Destiny 2
The granddaddy of the looter shooter, Destiny has always
been an incredible shooter with fantastic guns and beautiful
locations to explore. With Destiny 2, which is free to play right
now, you get to explore the universe once again with your fellow
guardians. The story and lore might be ridiculous and incredibly
tough to understand, but the core gameplay of Bungie's space
epic is best in its class. There is so much to do, from Adventures,
Strikes, Nightfalls, and six-person raids, you’ll constantly have
new loot to discover. Again Destiny 2 is a game that can be played
solo, but the real fun begins when you team up with a squad.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Arguably the biggest game of 2020 and one that got many people
through the lockdown blues, Animal Crossing: New Horizon
is unlike any other game on this list. This is all about building
your perfect island paradise, being nice to your neighbors, doing
gardening and collecting enough money to buy more goodies for
your home and town. It's a completely wholesome experience
and actually quite therapeutic, especially considering what is
going on in the real world. The co-op experience is also quite
different, with you being able to visit other people’s islands,
giving them gifts or just hanging out in their unique towns. It’s
an experience like no other and a welcome distraction from the
reality we are living in right now.

How a job title can
shape our identity

 From experience, once you reach a certain age
social gatherings have a pattern of predictability.
The preamble, usually with glass in hand, engages
with an unspectacular icebreaker: “Tell me, what
do you do?” Not wishing to offend these
professionals too much, “I’m in IT, HR” or any
other job that can be similarly abbreviated can
often make the follow-up line somewhat
challenging. On the other hand, as a cop I was
often interrogated following the utterance of the
less than convincing address, “My friend got done
for [whatever].” I kind of guessed that in all
probability it was they who had been pulled for the
misdemeanor in question and one thing was for
certain, they would rarely provide a full and
unbiased account.
Once I had obtained my qualifying law degree a
friend bizarrely introduced me as his barrister,
stretching my legal standing way beyond the realms
of reality. At a barbeque, on the way to getting well
and truly pissed, a guy once asked if I had studied
property law. It was one of the compulsory modules
and I loved a bit of trespass, however, when he
departed momentarily, only to return with the deeds
of his house, seeking advice on ownership of a sliver
of land between his and the adjoining property, I
knew I needed a future-proof escape plan.
Subsequently, thanks to a letter in Readers Digest, I
acquired my get-out-of-jail-free card if ever I wanted a
quiet evening: “I’m into scaffolding.” The ultimate
assassin of all future discussion.
As the author, Stephen R. Covey once said, “I am
not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of
my decisions.” As a nineteen-year-old, I decided to
join the police and this, inevitably, shaped my identity.
The same for anyone in IT or HR. Yet I wondered
how an unusual vocation would shape an individual.
How much more interesting would a social gathering
be if, for example, the person opposite stated that they
were an astronaut, astrophysicist, or lion tamer? At
this juncture I feel it prudent to manage your
expectations in that I have not, yet, interviewed
anyone from NASA, The Large Hadron Collider, or
the famous Budapest Circus. However, my list of
favorite dinner guests has a wonderful pedigree that
connects humility, honesty, and a ‘how the hell did
this happen?’ Their individual routes to their unique
and jaw-dropping professional standing was never
one of childhood fantasy or focussed desire.
What do you do Stephen Ellis?
“I put the zing in Starburst.”

As a kid, the predecessors of Starbursts were Opal
Fruits that were synonymous with the advertising
jingle, “made to make your mouth water!” I can vouch
that they did too! I had met a veritable food alchemist
or, as he modestly put it, a food flavoring specialist.
And that wasn’t all! He also had a prominent hand in
the creation of Percy Pigs! I was fast becoming a
salivating wreck as I listened intently to his story
which began in the most mundane of locations - a
mental institution.
A kindred spirit in that, like me, he didn’t have a
clue what he wanted to do in life when he left school.
As the swimming pool attendant at Darenth Park
Hospital, near Dartford in Kent, an eerie Victorian
sanatorium that nursed soldiers who had returned
from the second World War irreparably scarred by
the ravages of post-traumatic shock disorder,
Stephen’s career path could not have been more
uncertain. To add to the oddity, the BBC filmed the
wartime drama Colditz there, and on seeing the
actors dressed as Nazis one patient hid in a refuse bin
and celebrated his escape, only to be brought back
sometime later by the crew of the dustcart. During a
chance conversation whilst seated at the side of the
outside pool, the question was posed “What are you
going to do with your life then?” The puzzled young
man had no answer, to which the more worldly-wise
chap exclaimed, “It’s fashion or food!” Asserting that
people would always need to be clothed and fed
Stephen applied for and got a job as a junior food
technician at Chiltonian Biscuits. Alighting the train
home a mile and a half away the smell of lemon puffs
still filled the air!
My own vocational wakeup call occurred when, aged
seventeen, I was delivering the post as a clerical assistant at
the Royal Army Chaplains Department, Bagshot Park (now
the home of Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex)
and Mr. Purdy, the center manager, said, “You can’t do this
for the rest of your life! My son has joined the police. You
should too.” Funny how a chance remark can often change
your life forever.
Returning to Stephen, his career path saw him progress
within several high-profile food companies including
Unilever where he could pop into the Ice Cream laboratory
whenever the fancy took him to sample the Ambrosia of the
Gods! At this juncture in our conversation, I marveled at the
science behind the titillation of our taste buds and urgently
required a Mr. Whippy with a flake. Mr. Ellis your
curriculum vitae was good enough to eat!
At a school show and tell Stephen’s seven-year-old daughter
Niamh proudly announced that her mum was a nurse and
dad put the flavor in Starbursts! This netted Stephen a gig at
the school introducing the kids to the science behind taste.
And so, to the icing on the cake, the cherry on top and the
crème de la crème: Percy Pigs! I can happily overdose on
those beauties and still come back for more! What the hell
has hooked me? Stephen was, as usual, matter of fact. The
food company, seeking new business with the UK retail
giant Marks and Spencer, had the jelly (or gummies in the
trade) and foam, and Ellis the wizard weaved his secret spells
combining the two separate constituents and adding the
little craved European flavoring, the humble grape! The rest,
as they say, is history and Percy became a confectionary
superstar!
How has this journey ultimately shaped this sweet man?
Ask his four children and three grandchildren (with another
en-route) whose existence can be traced back to the moment
our younger food virtuoso, flush with cash, met his love
heart (not to be confused with the Swizzels confectionary
creation).
What do you do Marie Ruffell?
“I review the circumstances leading up to a domestic-related
death.”
At secondary school, we had career advice sessions. Mr.
Hutt, my mathematics teacher, ran these for my year group.
He was brilliant at algebra, longitude, and latitude but as
inspiration for reaching for the stars, he was a one out of ten.
If Marie had been in my class and Mr. Hutt had asked, “what
do you want to do when you leave school?” she could not
have honestly replied, “to review the causes of domestic
homicides Sir,” because up until the passing of the Domestic
Violence Crime and Victims Act 2004 this role didn’t exist.
To be fair, even if this unique position had been available
then, this is not what Marie had set her heart on. She
yearned to be an air traffic controller and passed her aviation
studies certificate with ease but had a change of heart and
obtained a Zoology degree at Aberystwyth University to
pursue her new dream of becoming a biology teacher.
Watching the hit British TV show ‘Juliet Bravo’ with her
mum as a young child never did leave her psyche. Who
would not want to become a police officer and wear that
classic uniform, especially the iconic hostess hat? Phew! Did
you manage to keep up with all those twists and turns?
During an appraisal review with the HR manager, our
then uniformed sergeant looked at the noticeboard plastered
with yellow post-it notes. Her gaze was drawn to the gap in
the Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) position. The temporary
role became permanent and she remained there for the rest
of her career.
Sometimes our life choices are paper thin. In this critical role
the bombardment of extreme acts of evil, often perpetrated
by those who hid behind the front doors of normal-looking
homes, led Marie to question if she had, on reflection,
developed an emotional immunity? Possibly an
understandable detachment where the most grievous of acts
rarely raised an eyebrow. The reality of ‘Femicide’ (from
research conducted by domestic abuse campaigner Karen
Ingala Smith in 2018) is that 61% of women killed by men
were murdered by a current or former partner.
Although the full horror of domestic abuse was clearly
visible, an understanding of the psychology involved
informed her ability to cope with the frequent return of
traumatized people to dysfunctional relationships, which on
the face of it, appeared nonsensical. Indeed, as a rookie cop, I
was ambivalent and, regrettably, considered ‘domestics’ as
an obstacle to dealing with the more exciting aspects of
operational policing. Training and reinforcing awareness of
the tell-tale signs became Marie’s driving ambition, helping
her in turn to better handle her understandable emotional
detachment since without this posture she could easily have
suffered vicarious mental harm.
Relinquishing her warrant card upon retirement, she was
subsequently drawn back to the police in her current civilian
role. Understanding the dynamics of dysfunctional

 relationships was still vital and the
more easily hidden and insidious
coercively controlling relationships
caused Marie a new anguish,
suspecting that many more people
suffered terrible and irreparable
mental scars.
During our initial conversations,
Marie was pretty matter-of-fact
about the impact her vocation had
on her life. Ex-cops, and I guess,
those from the military and other
key emergency services can often, if
my experiences are a useful gauge,
defer to the process that defines
our roles. Yet, I knew that no
warm-hearted human being, as she
clearly is, could have come through
this totally unscathed. After some
more gentle probing, she agreed!
Her relatives were totally
oblivious to the horrors she
routinely absorbs. A caring,
empathetic mother does get
upset. That is being human.
However, her roles within this
unique environment coupled
with her intuitive desire to
improve the way the police
learn, improve, and protect
vulnerable people has created a
protective shield. Support from
good friends has helped maintain
this tolerance albeit she did
concede that the removal of a
counselor due to budget cuts was
harmful.
Knowing that her current role is
examining the aftermath is much
less of a burden when compared to
the times she went to bed
wondering if she had put the
requisite safeguards in place when
she was at the frantic, fluid, and,
often, frightening end of the DVU.

The pace of change following her
reviews can often be frustrating
although the final scripting, by a
suitably qualified author, of the
concluding domestic homicide
review, invariably leads to positive
change.
Reflecting upon her haphazard
route into this discipline she was
nonetheless enthusiastically
optimistic. “Not knowing what you
want to be when you leave school
isn’t necessarily a bad thing. That’s
what I told my kids. They will find
their way.”
What did you do Rob
Lambert?
“I was part of the body recovery team
at the Clapham rail disaster.”
Having known Rob for several
years I did a double-take when he
casually mentioned that he had
entered the terrible carnage of the
Clapham rail disaster as part of the
body recovery team. I cannot recall
how this disclosure tripped out
other than I guess we had been
shooting the breeze about the old
days.
At 8:13am on Monday 12th
December 1988, due to a
catastrophic technical fault, three
trains collided near Clapham
Junction, South West London
resulting in thirty-five fatalities and
four hundred and eighty-four
injured. I vividly recall the news
bulletins, the tangled wreckage,
scattered personal belongings, and
countless members of the
emergency services. Until I had this
unexpected conversation with Rob,
I had not considered what would
inevitably happen after such a
tragic event. As a fellow cop, I had
the first-hand experience of dealing
with solo sudden deaths, yet this
was hardly a comparable
benchmark to what he and his
colleagues had faced after the
immediacy of saving lives had
evaporated and the grim task of
recovering so many victims had
commenced. Ordinary people
on their way to work with, no
doubt, Christmas on their
minds.
With his heart set on becoming
an RAF pilot, Rob had his
ambition snuffed out by color
blindness. Joining the
Metropolitan Police, he later
specialized as a member of the
Territorial Support Group
(TSG), the specialist public order
unit for the capital. A discrete
change to the terms of reference for
this unit saw officers assigned the
task of body recovery since
cumulatively this represented a
significant cadre of staff who could
be deployed en-mass at short notice
anywhere within the United
Kingdom. The training focused
upon evidential continuity. The
matching of body parts to the
correct victim often situated in
hazardous locations. At this time in

 policing process trumped emotion and
there was no psychiatric support. This
may, in part, explain why the exhibit
bags were colloquially referred to as
‘slop bags’. Interwoven with the
requirement to lead the police
response to a variety of high-profile
outbreaks of mass public disorder, such
as the Poll Tax riots of 1990, Rob
managed to squeeze in the pursuit of a
couple of Irish Republican Army (IRA)
terrorist bombers along the towpath
under Hammersmith bridge after they
tried to plant an explosive device. A
typical shift for the TSG? Perhaps not,
since there were the times of excessive
boredom, sat for thirty-two hours
outside of the French Embassy after a
guy took someone hostage and, the
oddity, such as the schizophrenic man
who wired his flat to the electricity
supply threatening to jump from the
window of a block of flats.
Scrambling down the embankment
from the Putney side the stench of
diesel was overpowering. Firefighters
seemed to be everywhere. Working in
pairs Rob and his partner were tasked
to manage the crime scene on a
carriage-by-carriage basis.
Razor-sharp debris and twisted
metalwork made it difficult to navigate.
Then he saw a foot. A man’s foot,
wearing a brown brogue. Then a leg.
Processing these, on the face it, horrific
scenes was oddly unemotional.
Imagining the body parts as prosthetic
Rob’s revelation reminded me of my
first post-mortem. The deceased
looked anything but human, more like
a manakin. In both situations, neither
of us had a personal connection to
what was in front of us. He never came
across a complete person, yet a
wristwatch was carefully removed,
bagged, and later returned to the
victim’s family. He remains thankful
that he was not called upon to perform
that task.
The search was exhausting,
interrupted by copious amounts of tea

and cigarettes proximate to the local
supermarket which had become a
temporary mortuary. Gallows humor
often permeated the nonchalant mood
that dominated the process of crime
scene management. Not that this
should detract from the care and
reverence that Rob and his colleagues
showed whilst putting their own safety
at risk as they negotiated the carnage.
Perhaps this was indicative of a coping
mechanism born out of repetitive
training, camaraderie, and dedicated
professionalism.
A few months later Rob faced the
same call, this time on the River
Thames when the Marchioness
collided with the dredger Bowbelle
and sank, claiming the lives of fifty-one
people celebrating a birthday. Ten
years later he was offered counseling.
The pragmatic, sensitive, and
reserved side of Rob’s character may
process this time of his life as simply
another day at the office. Yet I would
hazard a guess that his remarkable
fortitude has shaped him at a much
deeper level. I raise my glass to the
officers of the TSG who carried out the
tasks the more ordinary of us mortals
probably would never even think
about.

The last fifty years of data provided by
the UK’s Office for National Statistics
shows that, on average, a third of all
marriages ended in divorce. Stateside
the highest annual rate over the same
period was a little lower at
twenty-three percent. This snapshot
suggests the role of the Divorce Coach
is a must, especially since the ‘till death
do us part’ vow has a significant failure
rate. I must confess I never knew such
a profession existed until I met Sara
and listened to her unique and
inspiring story. Many of my close
friends had endured torrid break-ups
and I figured that the usual legal
interventions did little to heal the
inevitable emotional scars even if they
had successfully carved up the
finances. As a couple of divorced
friends put it, “How do I feel now we’re
divorced? I didn’t want to divorce him.
I wanted to bury him!” and just as
moving, “God it’s a good feeling! It’s as
though I have re-joined humanity!”
And what about those caught in the
crossfire? The unwilling. The
frightened. The kids.
I guessed that this was not a goal
nurtured at school, and I was right!
She was inspired when she attended a
seminar led by the motivational
American speaker, Tony Robbins,
setting up her own roaring business
which connected a UK audience to the
same professional knowledge. As a
successful coach her own ensuing
divorce and the trauma of a legal spat
was the best training for the creation
of her present incarnation.
Untangling the anger, depression,
deceit, and destruction which can
often occur before a positive roadmap
can even be imagined doesn’t come
without cost. I doubt cupid would ever
endorse a marriage made in heaven
expecting it to plumb the depths of
hell. The tragedy of many client
accounts was beautifully balanced by
the wonders of a text from a
ten-year-old daughter who simply said,
“thank you for giving me my mummy
back.” Bestselling books, television appearances, and the needs to be replaced with sustainable and tangible

lot? Sara explained that the first session, circa one and
half hours, was simply dedicated to listening, looking for
‘red flags’; those often-discrete pointers that
cumulatively identify the reasons for the breakup. The
synergy between body language and vocabulary
provides Sara with a route map to latterly probe the
likely emotional narrative and coach each client to see all
available options, creating vivid ‘paint and color’
outcomes.
Reprogramming self-talk to dumb down the negative
and shine a light on the positives seek to create a
momentum designed to dial down on destructive
emotions. As Sara explained, we are all born with a
remote control to our brains but frequently we don’t
know how to use it. Incompatible remotes, programmed
during our formative years, can trigger conflict in
relationships as Sara demonstrated with a powerful
example, “Mark’s parents would deal with conflict
head-on, remaining in situ until the issue came to some
form of conclusion. Claire’s parents would disengage,
giving each other space and often sleeping on it. When
they married Mark duplicated his learned script
believing this to be loving, whilst Claire’s urge was to
display her compassion by disengaging. Both thought
they were right” Is it any wonder that these
contradicting postures would inevitably lead to disaster?
Anger management is crucial, coupled with
empowering her clients to see obstacles as challenges,
whilst being cognisant that falling apart can be part of
the grieving process. A smile, even artificial, a run, or
simply holding your head up high can have a positive
effect. Running away and hiding is a human trait which

 How did you get involved first with
the beauty industry? Have you ever
had a moment so humiliating that you
wish Harry Potter was real and you
could just grab your invisible cloak
and disappear? 11 years ago I got fired
from a job working at a restaurant/
bar. I’ll never forget the look on that
manager's face when he called me into
his office and said Sheila today is going
to be your last day working here at
this restaurant. You will no longer be
employed please pack up your things
and go. The walk of shame down a flight
of stairs to my locker where I kept my
things was the smallest I had ever felt.
Did people know? Were they staring at
me because they knew the news? I had
just separated from my first husband
and my self-esteem was already super
low. I got this job so I could start a new
life for myself. I had terrible
social skills. I'm just a victim
mentality in general. Truth be
told the managers probably saw
that and honestly I probably
would’ve let me go too. But that
was the moment when I stopped
feeling sorry for myself and I felt
rage for the first time. I went
from being a sad little chihuahua
whimpering when its tail
between its legs into beast mode.
Have you ever felt rage? So
angry that nothing matters but
getting even!!! It feels weird to
say but two multi-million dollar
businesses later both online and
my studio. I love the quote that
her biggest flex is that she did
everything she said she was going to do.
I guess you could say that was me but I
did everything I was going I said I was
going to do and a bunch of other crazy
unexpected things as well. It’s amazing
what you can accomplish when you
stop whimpering and just start working.
When you stop being a victim and just
commit but you’re now going to have
victory over your life’s circumstance.
In Hollywood where you are based,
how important are "looks"?
Hollywood is extremely vain. People
are willing to go to extreme lengths in

order to be beautiful. And the standard
of beauty here is the type that you can
only purchase. Smart entrepreneurs
capitalize on that standard by making
sure they're selling it. Even if you're
the most incredible-looking human
you're still subpar. It worked to my
advantage because holy smokes, look at
the girls I've had on my portfolio. I've
had the honor of working on some of
the most drop-dead gorgeous women
in Los Angeles and therefore the world.
For several years the studio looked
like a conveyor belt for porn stars and
strippers. Babes on babes on babes.
Why should guys try and understand
& support their girl's makeup/beauty
routines in order to have a stronger
relationship? Listen, if she feels sexy,
she's happy, and if she's happy she'll
be more affectionate, and if she's more
affectionate you'll be happy.
What are your favorite products to
use and why? What kind of products?!
OMG, my new obsession is this body
butter by Truly Beauty called "Unicorn
Fruit". It makes my whole body smell
like magical fruity pebbles with sugar.
My husband loves it.
What types of makeup would you
recommend to guys to wear? In my
opinion, self-care for men should be
acceptable. Well-groomed men are sexy.
I tell my boys just you're boys doesn't
mean you can be a slob. Aside from
just good hygiene which is super sexy a
little cosmetic assistance doesn't hurt.
Tinted moisturizer is becoming more
acceptable with men. And self-tanner
I think is a game-changer for muscle
definition. Why risk the harmful UV
rays when you can moisturize your skin
and get a tan at the same time. Win-win!
Botox and PMU have grown immensely
more popular with the male population.
I would suggest for men to consult a
beauty expert to help with this. Stay
away from anything shiny or glittery. A
nice matte finish to your foundation or
bronzer is usually the best bet.
You are massive on social media!
How important is social media for
companies and people like you these
days? If you are not visible,
daily, you are invisible. If you
want to make money and have
a viable long-term business, a
robust online presence is not
a suggestion; this is a MUST.
Unfortunately, plenty of business
owners recently learned this the
hard way. I feel like this reality is
incredibly hard for people who
have been in business for several
years and have survived just fine
before Instagram and Facebook
existed. A lot of people are still
bargaining with social media by
dabbling in it once in a while.
I’m not taking it seriously. Why?
YOU might think you have
clients, and you’re comfortable.
But I know some of you are starting
to realize that your clients are slowly
going somewhere else. Or perhaps when
COVID hit, and you needed another
way to make a living, you realized that
having a strong social media presence
to sell PPE or online courses too would
have been nice. Still in denial? Please

before it gets worse. You know you’re in
trouble when you say, “This is the way
I’ve always done it!” Do you know who
said that? Blockbuster Video. They are
now HISTORY because of the new kid
on the block, NETFLIX. They refused to
modernize. Get to acceptance, that social
media should now be a part of your
J-O-B, as quickly as possible so you can
start to make the change, and not get left
behind any further back. Because to stay
relevant in today’s ever-changing beauty
industry, you have to be on social media.
What tips can you give to help others
scale their social media channels?
Building influence is difficult. I think
the most difficult part is learning how
to encourage yourself to keep going,
keep posting, keep smiling even when
you feel like no one cares. Now several
million dollars later, I’m sure you say
that’s easy for me to say. But let’s go
back into my time machine, shall we?
My first podcast had 12 downloads. My
first long caption post on IG had 8 likes.
My first live I’m pretty sure it was just
my mom and her friends watching. My
first online course I had three sales and I
was elated. When stuff like this happens
you feel like a failure. The hardest part

showing up every day no matter what

see what happens if instead, you can
offer yourself the grace of understanding
that without the failures, you would not
be able to reach your desired destination.
Where do you see the beauty industry
as a whole heading towards this
year as we are still in the middle of a
pandemic? Beauty educators are gonna
have to pivot to stay relevant through
learning how to turn their in-person
training into something that will be
accessible online. E-learning is on the
rise, it is projected to be an almost 4
BILLION Dollar industry by 2026.
Online education is the future. And not
to mention online course creators are
extremely profitable right now they
haven’t slowed down one bit. Make
money as a beauty entrepreneur online
right now. I am a 7 figure permanent
makeup artist turned 7 figure full-time
(work from home) course creator.
Listen, If I am an artist and I figured out

online courses I am positive I can

When something puzzles, surprises, or ov rwh lms

me I tend to be sucked into a vortex of discovery, of en
buffeted by co tra iction and con u i n. A s e of
clarity normally emerges a thoug the wonderful thing
about b ing human is that our minds are often fluid. When
someone sugge ts that changing my min is in some
way a negative trait I smile. As the English psychologist
Edward de Bono observed, “If you never change your
mind, why have one?” The subject of ghosts and the
supernatural has encouraged me to perform several
intellectual somersaults during my lifetime and when
I commenced this latest investigation, spurred on by a
recent conversation about death, I anticipated a chaotic
journey.

 As a kid, I was, unsurprisingly, open to the suggestive concepts that
connected with all manner of huge issues. Things as a youngster I
just couldn’t grasp - religion, death, creation, and many more. My
introduction to the notion of ghosts was, from my fragmented early
recollections, drawn from television. I recall having watched a black
and white horror film with a scene where a ghostly hand regularly
appeared from behind a door. I can’t remember the name of it,
although as I watched it with my parents it had to be some ‘B’ movie
classic that wasn’t designed to scare me shitless. And indeed, it
didn’t until when I was in the bath my dad quietly opened the door,
turned off the light, and made some ghostly howls before switching
the light back on to expose his hand. That did shit me up! In order
to compartmentalize my evolving juvenile fear of things that may
go bump in the night, I applied some defensive logic. I convinced
myself that if I believed in ghosts they would simply leave me alone.
And so they did!
Later on, my chosen school life subjects were very much
biased towards the sciences (physics, chemistry & biology) and
mathematics. I loved geography too. This heavily biased logic
continued into college where I embarked on the educational
equivalent of dominatrix sex: A-Levels in physics, pure and
applied mathematics (as separate subjects). I had wanted to study
geography since I was obsessed with the formation of oxbow lakes,
but my Dad made the persuasive pitch that the country would
always need scientists, and so I commenced my route to NASA and
future space exploration. Somewhere along the way I discovered
women, Polish vodka, and partying and managed to nail an “E”
grade in only one subject – A level combined mathematics. I can,
however, still confidently explain how a U-shaped lake is formed
when a wide river meander is separated from the main flow.
I had not consciously monitored my cognitive connection
with phantoms although my now more analytical predisposition
combined with lashings of
Scooby-Doo turned my mind to the conclusion that any
apparitions could always be explained away by common sense. And
that was my position for a great chunk of my adult life. Ghosts were
no more than a fantasy item and I would never lose any sleep, even if
something went bump in the night, as more probably than not it was
simply the cat.
Fast forward to the here and now and I have to confess that as
I reflected more upon the deathly discussion, I began to question
my comfort zone. I had seen many dead bodies. As a police officer, I
vividly recall the first autopsy that I went to. Rather than mimicking
the opening title sequence of Quincy, M.E (played so brilliantly
by the late Jack Klugman) where the rookie cops pass out one
by one I was transfixed at the awe that is the human body. The
extraordinary colors and incredible natural engineering. The smell,
on the other hand, was not for the fainthearted. Seeing a body that
I had no personal connection with was infinitely easier to deal with
than viewing someone that did mean something to me. Even so,
the greyness of a lifeless body reminded me that they were now
departed and all that remained was a vessel. Their essence had gone.
I was minded to believe that the soul simply went out like a light at
this juncture too.

In 1907, Doctor Duncan MacDougall from Massachusetts sought
to weigh human souls by observation at the time of death of six
patients. He concluded that the human spirit weighed 21.3 grams.
His findings were condemned by the wider scientific population
who cited the experiment as an example of defective selective
reporting. Doctor Duncan had failed to impress me too. But I
remained suitably curious to understand why some folk still
believed in ghosts.
As I didn’t off the top of my head consider any of my friends to
be nut jobs, I decided to conduct a little research of my own, honing
down my impressive list of social media contacts (I’m a popular
guy!) into a smaller cohort: the ones I had met, had held reasonably
deep and meaningful conversations with, didn’t wrap tin foil around
their heads (in public anyway) and responded to my invitation to
discuss the notion of ghosts. I fully acknowledge that this approach
may have whispers of the good Doctor Duncan’s choosy coverage
although to be fair that wasn’t exactly the point. I was intrigued
to discover how many of my chosen sensible friends were in my
corner. The answer was a fat zero. All had a tale to tell and many had
never openly shared their stories, which I intend to remedy before
disclosing where this inquiry took me. Now please dim the lights,
ensure you are alone, leave the window on the latch and figure this
lot out for yourself…
Around thirty-five years ago, eighteen months into their new home
Ally was in bed with her husband. Both fell asleep whereupon she
felt pressure on her chest. She stirred prompting her husband to
rouse. He shook her and said there was a small boy with big blue
eyes and blonde hair sat on her. He said he was about a year old. It
spooked both although they decided that it was some form of joint
hallucination and eventually went back to sleep. The next morning
their two-year-old son got into bed with Ally and began chatting
away whilst looking at the ceiling giggling. When asked who he was
talking to he said, “The little boy in the curtains.” Mentioning it to a
neighbor Ally was informed that the previous occupants had lost a
year-old baby boy to cot death. He was blonde.
As a police constable, Steve attended a sudden death one sunny
Sunday afternoon in Reading. ‘Old Tom’ lived alone. The landlady
of the local pub took him a dinner every Sunday and she found
him dead in his bed. Nothing was known about him, so Steve
began looking in drawers to find some identification. Suddenly and
bizarrely, the only picture in the room fell from the wall above the
fireplace. It was an incredibly old photograph of a soldier. Steve felt
compelled to say aloud, “Don't worry Tom. I'm not stealing. I need
to find out about you so we can take care of you properly.” He then
went down to a basement room and in the first drawer he opened,
he found an old Army paybook with Tom's full details and a battered
old address book. Steve had no goosebumps nor was the air chilled.
Geraldine once lived in a cul-de-sac of five properties. It was built
upon old, abandoned coal mines. Random tremors that shook
the houses were commonplace due to mine movement. She and
other householders sometimes heard men whistling. A later family
photograph revealed a figure behind her Dad which looked like a
man with a Miner’s hat on. She later found out that her house was

 built on the entrance to the shaft where
the miners used to congregate for work.
Whilst walking from her bedroom to
the bathroom, passing the stairwell, Julia
saw an old English sheepdog, sat at the
bottom of the stairs looking up. Feeling
prompted to say, “Oh. Hi” as she passed. A
second look revealed nothing.
Whilst having dinner with a group of
fellow delegates at Petwood House,
Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, not far from
RAF Scampton, the home of the World
War II Dambuster squadron, Mairéad
noticed one lady reacting to something
under the table. Moments later another
lady looked down too. At the time this
didn’t raise any suspicions and the meal
continued without further incident.
Returning to her room in the Tudor-
style annex she was conscious that there
was a back door that had an internal
unsecured porch. Locking the rear
entrance and placing a chair against her
room door before a late call to her husband
she felt a hand on her face, gently stroking
two or three times as she rested in bed.
Aware of the soft pressure, she froze.
Bizarrely Mairéad responded, "Thank
you, I'm not frightened, I feel safe with
you here". In the morning, on leaving her
room she saw a chambermaid and asked if
the place had ghosts. The member of staff
went white and said, “Yes, we have, a lady.”
At breakfast, Mairéad told her class
what had happened. The two ladies
then disclosed that they had both felt a
phantom dog brush past their legs whilst
sat at dinner. That day the hotel moved
her to an adjacent room, although a chair
was still propped up against the door.
That night the television inexplicably
came on at 2.30am. The back porch that
she had locked the night before was found
unlocked in the morning and the chair had
been moved.
Sitting downstairs Kathryn could hear
the hot water tank draining. On checking
the upstairs bathroom, the hot tap was
on full blast. This happened a couple of
times before stopping. In the same house,
her lodger was hit on the head by a photo

frame inexplicably propelled from a set
of drawers when she walked into her
bedroom with her mother.
Frankie reports several ghostly
encounters, one cited within an
18th-century alehouse. My left brain,
responsible for rational thought, sounded
its claxons at this point since copious
amounts of alcohol can often make people
extremely suggestive. As a cop, I had
lost count of the number of times that a
drunk driver had claimed that their ability
to drive was actually enhanced as they
poured themselves out of the driver’s
seat. However, his brother and at least
six other locals had a mutual experience
when they simultaneously witnessed
a crystal decanter filled with undiluted
orange squash lift from the mahogany bar
and slowly descend onto the floor, landing
softly and perfectly upright. The landlord
stated that his living room, directly above
the bar, was always freezing even with the
heating on and the family dog would never
enter.
I sometimes worked with Frankie on
the Slough & District Police area and
Cliveden House was a favorite night-time
tea spot. Dating back to 1666 the beautiful
forty-seven-roomed mansion in the rolling
Buckinghamshire countryside became the
meeting place of royalty, the aristocracy,
and parliamentarians. In 1961 it was the
place of scandal that rocked the British
Government when John Profumo, the then
Secretary of State for War,
embarked on an illicit affair with
Christine Keeler, a nineteen-year-old
mistress of a suspected Russian spy. Gavin,
the always benevolent night-porter, would
entertain with tales of the ghosts that
frequented the building.
Calling in advance of a nocturnal visit
Frankie was informed by Gavin that he was
running a quick errand and would be back
shortly to put the kettle on. Approaching
via the stunning runway of a gravel
driveway Frankie and his crewmate both
saw Gavin moving from one ground floor
window to another before disappearing.
Except it wasn’t Gavin, the only member
of staff on duty that night, who had been
in another part of the estate. I also recall
Gavin regaling me with his ghost stories
as I drank tea and admired the elegance
of the main hallway. One night at his
suggestion I sipped my beverage in a small
library and looked at the picture on the
wall which Gavin proclaimed contained a
hidden child. As I readied to leave, I took
one last glimpse and the obvious outline of
a child appeared. I never admitted this to
Gavin since it was only a trick of the light
and my active imagination. Wasn’t it?
My gang of reluctant ghostbusters felt
compelled to reinforce their credentials
as persons of reasonable firmness, and
some thought it prudent to add that they
had not been drinking alcohol or taking
any illegal substances. All were genuinely
disturbed at what they had experienced
and there was collective difficultly in
reaching a unanimous explanation. Some
attempted to draw upon the emotion
or energy contained within the specter
whilst others wondered if they had a belief
mechanism that could tune into certain
vibes. Most felt a degree of embarrassment
and had continually posed the question,
“Why me?”
Lynne, a spiritualist, asserted that
“Sometimes there is residual energy in
properties. People who've died are looking
to connect with loved ones. If people have
clairvoyant gifts, they may see spirits but
it's possible to hear, sense, or even smell
the spirit.”
So where has this journey left me? I must
confess that the uninhibited disclosures
by my friends, detailed and often with
others involved have caused a degree of
unease. Whilst I have concluded that I do
not possess the psychic ability that may
or may not be required to engage with
the requisite connections, I find that the
answer to the only question left to ask,
‘Do I now believe in Ghosts?’ is simply
yes. The supplementary question that I
didn’t think I would ask when I started this
investigation is still yet to be answered.

One of the biggest actors in the world,
quite literally, is a household name
around the world. The Austrian
behemoth went on to dominate not
only the world of bodybuilding but
became one of the most recognizable
actors in history and even went on
to become a big-time American
politician. Yet the man that gave us
so many famous movie quotes did
not always have it easy and things
could’ve been very different if he
didn’t make some life-changing
decision at a very young age.

Hasta la vista, baby!
Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947, the
second son of Gustav and Aurelia Schwarzenegger in an isolated
village near Graz, Austria. The country was still reeling from the
aftermath of World War II and many families were without food
or work. Schwarzenegger's father, Gustav, was the local police
chief, and the family lived above the police station where Gustav
worked. The Schwarzenegger home was a humble one. In fact,
they did not have indoor plumbing until Arnold was a teenager.
Before joining the police force, Gustav Schwarzenegger was
a military officer, and he ran his household in a strict military
fashion. Both Arnold and Meinhard were required to get up
before sunrise to tend to their chores. After chores came a
rigorous exercise routine, followed by breakfast. His father,
however, was struggling with alcohol and would often take it out
on his boys. Gustav is reported to have beaten and intimidated
Arnold and, when he could, pitted his two boys against one
another. He also ridiculed Schwarzenegger's early dreams of
becoming a bodybuilder. "It was a very uptight feeling at home,"
Schwarzenegger later recalled. So uptight and uncomfortable,
in fact, that Schwarzenegger would later refuse to attend the
funeral of his father, who died in 1972, or his brother, who was
killed in a car crash in 1971. In an interview with Fortune in 2004,
Schwarzenegger told how he suffered what "would now be called
child abuse" at the hands of his father: "My hair was pulled. I was
hit with belts. So was the kid next door. It was just the way it
was. Many of the children I've seen were broken by their parents,
which was the German-Austrian mentality. They didn't want to
create an individual. It was all about conforming. I was
one who did not conform, and whose will could not be
broken. Therefore, I became a rebel. Every time I got hit,
and every time someone said, 'You can't do this,' I said,
'This is not going to be for much longer because I'm
going to move out of here. I want to be rich. I want to be
somebody”.
However Gustav did instill a love of sport in his two
boys, with Meinhard, who died when he was twenty-
three years old in a car accident, was a boxing champion
and Arnold showed promise as a soccer player. It was
while performing exercises to strengthen his legs for
soccer that Schwarzenegger turned to the sport that
would eventually make him famous, bodybuilding.
Schwarzenegger pursued weightlifting and bodybuilding
with a passion. He trained for hours a day, both at a local
gym and at home where he set up a training area in a
room that had no heat. He also studied anatomy and
nutrition to understand how to become physically fit. His
parents worried that he was obsessed with training, but
Schwarzenegger had his eyes on a goal to leave his little
village behind and become a success in America.

Schwarzenegger served in the Austrian Army in 1965 to
fulfill the one year of service required at the time of all
18-year-old Austrian males. During his army service, he
won the Junior Mr. Europe contest. He went AWOL
during basic training so he could take part in the
competition and then spent a week in military prison.
He entered another bodybuilding contest in Graz, at
Steirerhof Hotel, where he placed second. He was voted
"best-built man of Europe", which made him famous
in bodybuilding circles. Schwarzenegger made his first
plane trip in 1966, attending the NABBA Mr. Universe
competition in London. He placed second in the Mr.
Universe competition, not having the muscle definition
of American winner Chester Yorton. Charles "Wag"
Bennett, one of the judges at the 1966 competition, was
impressed with Schwarzenegger and he offered to coach
him. As Schwarzenegger had little money, Bennett invited
him to stay in his crowded family home above one of his
two gyms in Forest Gate, London. Yorton's leg definition
had been judged superior, and Schwarzenegger, under
a training program devised by Bennett, concentrated
on improving the muscle definition and power in
his legs. Staying in the East End of London helped
Schwarzenegger improve his rudimentary grasp of the
English language. Living with the Bennetts also changed
him as a person. In a 2009 interview with the Telegraph
Schwarzenegger expanded on the influence the Bennetts
had on him, "Being with them made me so much more
sophisticated. When you're the age I was then, you're
always looking for approval, for love, for attention, and
also for guidance. At the time, I wasn't really aware of
that. But now, looking back, I see that the Bennett family
fulfilled all those needs. Especially my need to be the best
in the world. To be recognized and to feel unique and
special. They saw that I needed that care and attention
and love.” Schwarzenegger is considered among the most
important figures in the history of bodybuilding, and his
legacy is commemorated in the Arnold Classic annual
bodybuilding competition. He has remained a prominent
face in bodybuilding long after his retirement, in part
because of his ownership of gyms and fitness magazines.
He has presided over numerous contests and awards
shows. One of the first competitions he won was the
Junior Mr. Europe contest in 1965. He won Mr. Europe
the following year, at age 19. He would go on to compete
in many bodybuilding contests and win most of them.
His bodybuilding victories included five Mr. Universe
wins, and seven Mr. Olympia wins, a record which would
stand until Lee Haney won his eighth consecutive Mr.
Olympia title in 1991. Schwarzenegger might have been
a household name in the bodybuilding circles but he
wanted more and soon he would move onto movies and
become the biggest name in Hollywood.
I’ll Be Back
After retiring from bodybuilding to focus on his acting
career, Schwarzenegger moved to America with as little
as $20 in his pocket. Schwarzenegger, who worked
under the pseudonym Arnold Strong in his first feature,
HERCULES in New York, quickly made a name for
himself in Hollywood. Although, Schwarzenegger's
strength was in his biceps, not his acting skills, and his
voice was overdubbed by an English actor due to his
limited knowledge of the English language. This did
not prevent the Austrian’s star from rising and in 1977,
the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recognized
him with a Golden Globe for New Male Star of the Year
for his role in Stay Hungry opposite Sally Field. His big
break came in 1982 when the sword and sorcery epic,
Conan the Barbarian. Critics panned his performance,
claiming that it was nearly impossible to understand his
German-accented English. Audiences, however, loved the
movie, which turned out to be a box-office hit. Two years
later, in 1984, Schwarzenegger cemented his box-office
appeal when he appeared in the movie The Terminator.
Schwarzenegger played a violent cyborg who was sent
from the future to exterminate the mother of humankind's
future leader. He spoke seventy-four words in the movie,
all delivered in a monotone, robotic voice. Audiences did
not mind the lack of acting ability, and they flocked to
see Schwarzenegger in the sci-fi thriller. The movie was
a smash hit and would go on to spawn numerous sequels,

 the majority of them featuring the beloved Austrian.
It was also the movie that started the endless string of
amazing one-liners that Schwarzenegger would deliver
throughout his acting career.
Action movies like The Terminator proved to be wildly
popular in the ’80s, and Schwarzenegger proved to be the
perfect action hero. He followed The Terminator with a
string of movies, including Commando (1985), Predator
(1987), Total Recall (1990), and True Lies (1994). He
also continued the Terminator movies, starring in
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), which produced
the famous line, "Hasta la vista, baby," and Terminator 3:
Rise of the Machines (2003). For his role in Terminator
3, Schwarzenegger was paid $30 million. In addition to
playing the tough-as-nails hero, Schwarzenegger starred
in a number of comedies, including three movies made
by director Ivan Reitman, Twins (1988), Kindergarten
Cop (1990), and Junior (1994). Moviegoers embraced
the "lighter side of Arnold," and critics admitted that
Schwarzenegger was growing as an actor. Everyone
agreed that he was box-office gold. In fact, in 1993, he was
recognized as the International Box Office Star of the
Decade. By 2004 Schwarzenegger had appeared in nearly
thirty movies, and he brought his unique style to each
role. One thing he never lost was his accent. Comedians
and critics made countless jokes about the way "Ah-nuld"
talked, but Schwarzenegger seemed to take it in stride.
He also explained in a 1991 interview with Pat Broeske
that he did not want to get rid of his accent completely
because it had become, Broeske noted, "his trademark,
his signature."

I’m very hungry!
Of course, Schwarzenegger's hunger for success did not
stop at being a massive Hollywood star. So far he had
dominated two very different industries but he had one
more he wanted to compete in, the world of politics. A
Republican for many years, Schwarzenegger had been
such a dynamic public figure in the Bush administration
that people wondered if he was heading for a future in
politics. Schwarzenegger denied the rumors for years,
claiming he was too busy being a businessman and family
man. In 2002, however, he spent a good deal of time
campaigning in California for state grant money to fund
after-school programs for children. And, in 2003, when
California Governor Gray Davis was threatened by a
recall, the buzz was strong that Schwarzenegger would
throw his hat in the ring. The election led to a media
frenzy since it was the first time in California's history that

a governor faced a recall. In addition, people came out of
the woodwork to campaign for Davis's job. On August 6,
2003, Schwarzenegger fueled the frenzy by announcing
that he, too, was going to run for governor. He made his
announcement during an interview on the late-night
television program The Tonight Show. Schwarzenegger
spent the next several months campaigning in rather
untraditional ways. For example, he was interviewed
by disc jockey Howard Stern), who is known for his
outrageous radio antics. Schwarzenegger peppered his
interviews with references to his movies, promising to
say "Hasta la vista" to new taxes and calling himself the
"Collectionator," since one of his goals was to ask the
federal government for funds to bail California out of
its economic crisis. All of the media attention prompted
voters to turn out in droves, and on October 8, 2003, the
citizens of California elected Arnold Schwarzenegger
governor with 48.6 percent of the vote. On November
17, during his swearing-in ceremony, Schwarzenegger
commented, "It is no secret that I'm a newcomer to
politics. I realize I was elected on faith and hope. And I
feel a great responsibility not to let the people down."
The public may have felt they needed an action hero to
come to their aid, but political commentators had their
doubts. Schwarzenegger was able to campaign on catchy
phrases, but what would he do once in office? According
to political consultant David Axelrod in a 2003 Time
article, "This isn't the movies. No one is going to throw
him a ray gun so he can blow up the deficit."
Schwarzenegger's first days in office were watched
closely. He made good on several of his campaign
promises, including lowering car taxes. He was also
applauded for trying to get California Democrats and
Republicans to work together to help solve the state's
budget problems. Schwarzenegger, however, was just
beginning to flex his political muscles. His state still
faced a staggering amount of debt, and he tried to
figure a way out without hurting social programs like
education and health care. In March 2004, voters passed
Schwarzenegger's Proposition 57, which would allow
the state to use bonds (low-interest, long-term loans) to
slash $15 billion from the ever-growing debt. Politicians
considered the proposition to be a daring move, but
Schwarzenegger was used to taking chances, and he had
faith that the voters would believe in him. In a rally held
just after the vote, and reported on CNN, he reassured the
public that his borrowing plan would "make California
the golden state that it once was." As governor, he was
California's most effective marketing tool, traveling
across the country and around the world promoting

Schwarzenegger made restoring
health and fitness a top priority. He
signed legislation making the state's
school nutrition standards the

to $700 million in federal Race to the
Top funds. But it is Schwarzenegger’s
commitment to giving something
back to his state and to his country
through public service that gives him
the most satisfaction; donating his
time, energy, and personal finances
to serving others all over the world.
Since leaving office, Schwarzenegger
co-founded the R20 Regions of
Climate Action, a global non-profit
dedicated to helping subnational
governments develop, implement,
and communicate the importance
of low-carbon and climate-resilient
projects as well as their economic
benefits. In December 2012, he
was recognized as a 2012 Global
Advocate by the United Nations
Correspondents Association for his
work with the organization.
Looking back at where it all started
for Schwarzenegger, very few
would have ever imagined that
the poor little Austrian boy would
go on to dominate the world of
bodybuilding, movies, and politics,
yet Schwarzenegger always believed.
His drive to succeed never waned
or faltered, even when faced with
insurmountable odds. In hindsight, it
was actually not the Terminator that
was indestructible, but rather the
heart and passion of an Austrian man
that would never quit.

 Happy to have you featured on FHM! Tell us what
are some of the things you did to prepare for this
shoot? I appreciate that! A philosophy that I have had
throughout my life thanks in part to my mommy was
if you are prepared or maintain then getting ready will
never be too dauting or out of reach. I don’t eat fast
food but I did cut back on my alcohol I am a whiskey
girl LOL. I upped my water intake and cut down the
carbs to prepare for this shoot. I also added a few more
days of cardio to my workout routine.
You’ve got an amazing figure and beauty about you;
we’re keen to know what you would say is your
favorite physical feature about yourself and why?
Growing up I used to hate my legs because they were
always so muscular compare to my counterparts. I got
made fun of and wore pants all the time. As I’ve gotten
older, I have grown to love them for exactly that reason
and will wear shorts any chance I get!
Being a glamorous model must have its perks, what
are some of your most memorable experiences in
your career? The first that comes to mind is a shoot
I did in Las Vegas at Red Rock Canyon. It was so hot
that we had to pour water on the rocks in between each
shot! The second and most recent was in Southern
California with Ryan, Luis and Bridget along with my
niece Ashantee looking for a track location! It was
raining but once we got to the track it stopped raining
and the sky was beautiful and it was an amazing shoot.
What would you say sets you apart? What sets me
apart is journey to get here. I grew up playing sports
and being really into my studies. I went to college on a
track scholarship which eventually led me to starting
my own a personal training and lifestyle business,
On Trac Training and Devon J. Tracy respectively,
along with a nonprofit (camp title IX). Modeling is
a passion and love doing it but I also love that I can
be multifaceted in multiple areas while maintaining
my authenticity along the way. It’s important women
and girls know they are limitless in their abilities and
possible achievements.
On the topic of men, what was the complete best,
and worst first impressions you’ve got on a first
date? Worst impression is someone self-centered and
closeminded. They ask you a question to ultimately

talk over you or want you to smile and nod…lol
definitely not me! Best date and impressions are always
something that is an experience. I love trying new
things and learning along the way, being stagnant is
boring and will not get or keep my attention!
What would you say is the most surprising thing
about you that not many people know? I am not a
fan of heights and have never been on a roller coaster.
If you had to choose, would you say money and
wealth determines success, or is it one’s personal
achievements and happiness? Hands down
achievements and happiness over wealth. I will always
be wealthy because I do what I love and inspire others
to do the same. No one remembers how much you had
they remember how you made them feel, the impact
you had on them and the community. I feel that if you
focus on achievements and happiness you will always
be wealthy. I want to be remembered as someone who
achieved many things and had fun along the way haha.
On a more personal level and in an ideal world,
where do you see yourself in five or ten years; time
in terms of family, career and life in general.? In
5-10 years, I see international and statewide growth in
my businesses. I am excited about my future ventures
both in business and modeling. I see myself being
a recognized trainer, lifestyle coach and of course
continuing to model. I hope within the next 5-10 years
to be married and have kids…I think i’d be a cool wife
and mom lol!
What motivates you the most to keep on doing
what you do? My biggest motivations are my family,
friends and clients/athletes. I strive to be the best
daughter, sister, aunt and friend I can be. I am blessed to
do what I love and love what I do! I want to inspire by
my actions and accomplishments not just words. The
naysayers also motivate me as I love to prove people
wrong and break stereotypes along the way.

GRENADE
Bringing World Rally Climbing down from the lofty appeal of a Tesla Model S and Aspark Owl featured
elsewhere on these pages is a little hatchback that proves that dynamite comes in
to your garage small packages. It might not look like it on the surface but this once-friendly and
common city hatchback has been transformed by Toyota’s Motorsport Division,
Gazoo Racing, to be something of a giant killer.

To understand why this has happened
during a time when the automotive world
seems to be consolidating rather than
funding skunkworks projects like this, one
only needs to look over to motorsport.
Toyota’s relatively new Gazoo Racing
moniker is establishing itself in Endurance
Racing, Off-road competition and World
Rally - The latter is where the Toyota Yaris
competes. Involvement in this incredibly
expensive motorsport requires another
outlet in order to make it viable; a place
where all this development can be
repurposed for mainstream and
eventually sold. It’s a recipe that, at its
most prolific in the 80s and 90s, produced
some of the world’s most desirable,
game-changing cars and the GR Yaris
proves it still does!
This really shouldn’t surprise us. Toyota
president, Akio Toyoda, is a keen racing
driver. Back when the GT86 was launched
he made a promise that the future of
Toyota was going to be focused on
building cars that are fun to drive. The
GT86 and Supra certainly delivered - even
the previous Yaris GRMN that was a sort
of half-baked effort with a silly price was
amazingly visceral to drive. Turns out,
that was just the Au derve for what was to
come.
The GR Yaris is a straight-down-the-
middle compromise between what a
modern world rally driver wants and what
a niche group car enthusiasts can
realistically sink their teeth into, and spice
up the drive to the office. It’s currently the
only car competing in WRC’s pinnacle
class with a road-going clone. The chassis
is one-part Yaris but it has been fused with
other Toyota bits that not only make it a
lot stiffer but allow for the car’s main
headline feature – the all-wheel-drive
system. It’s also wider, longer and lower
but most definitely still a compact
creature that’s good at threading itself
(sometimes sideways) through life like it’s
in some kind of 90s arcade racer.
Traditionally you might expect that under
the hood is a spicy turbocharged 2.0-liter
engine with advanced anti-lag system but
those were the old days. New modern
WRC rules call for a fixed 1.6-liter capacity
(the same as in Formula One) with
turbocharging allowed. The GR Yaris runs
a 3-cylinder engine versus the WRC car’s
4-cylinder so power of 257bhp and 266lb/
ft is down on the WRC car’s output of
385bhp and 343lb/ft. Still, at least you’ll be
driving the “world’s most powerful
3-cylinder.” Probably best to say nothing
at all because this car isn’t defined entirely
by numbers.
If it were solely about binary
performance numbers, it certainly would
have a fancy pack of clutches able to shift
gears in milliseconds rather than the
six-speed manual it actually has. The
manual’s short, crisp throw and heavy
clutch pedal is a combination that rewards

perfect accuracy. Haven’t said that about a
Toyota’s gearbox in years!
Sport mode highlights this all-wheel-drive
system and I could see myself spending
every minute in this mode because to me it
epitomizes what the car is all about. Here
the GR Yaris sends about 70 percent of the
torque to the rear axle. It’s essentially an
incognito drift mode and on a short
wheelbase like the Yaris’s, its effect is
pronounced but not nervously so. You can
really hustle it from apex to apex using a
variety of driving styles, each packing its
own reward. Move from Sport mode to
Track mode and some of the edginess
disappears; power is split more evenly for a
push-and-pull approach, resulting,
ostensibly, in higher exit speeds.
However, this is still about driving purity
so one won’t find a single button for the
dampers, meaning that the GR Yaris is
firm and deliberate out the box and every
day of the week. This thing eats tarmac for
breakfast, lunch and supper and doesn’t
shelter you away from that fact. The
chassis is faithful to the point where you
trust everything it does simply because
there’s no electronic filter between you
and the feedback.
While all this is happening, the engine
provides a rasping soundtrack with an
enthusiastic bark that is well matched to
its bite. Flatulent crackles and pops are
less premeditated and slightly less artificial
than the usual hot hatchback crowd and it
buzzes and sings with rich motorsport
pedigree.
A Yaris’s interior isn’t the most exciting
starting point for a hot hatch but throw in
some softly-cushioned bolstered seats and
the mood changes very quickly. There are
little patches of Alcantara where your
hands rest and the pedals have grippy
aluminum finishes, for the type of
heel-and-toe driving that this car thrives
on. There’s also a very genuine FIA plaque
that you won’t find on the aftermarket
scene.
Considering that this is a Yaris that has
suddenly been handed double the
horsepower, the driving position is
surprisingly good when you want to give it
a proper thrashing. And that goes for a lot
of other things around the cabin; the step
up from volume seller to this feral hatch is
remarkably capable and controlled. Rather
don’t ask about rear-seat practicality –
Toyota has enough of those types of cars
already.
Toyota sees the GR Yaris as a vital
brand builder. It wouldn’t be all that
unrealistic to think that due to Toyota’s
position as the largest motor corporation
in the world, that Gazoo Racing could
eventually become a household name in
the performance game. If Toyota can copy
and paste this formula to its other models,
there will be no stopping them.

 ASPARK’S
SUPERBIRD
The new supercar from Japan is already
making bold claims. Can it deliver?
“I own an Aspark Owl”. This sounds like a
response to a question about birdlife but in
actual fact, it’s the most unusual claim in the
current supercar conversation. However, re-read
that sentence because it tells you something
significant – the Aspark Owl has finally gone on
sale and there’s even an official website where
anyone can ‘request to own an Owl’.
In the first and last owl analogy in this story,
the fastest accelerating road-legal car is bound
prey on other elite supercars and do so in
complete, deadly silence.
Four years after being announced as a concept
car at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the
Japanese-built Aspark owl has started to prove
its numerous critics wrong, although it still
needs to deliver on those performance promises
with the whole world watching.
Top of that list is its claim to be the fastest
accelerating road-legal car. According to Aspark,

it clocked a 0-60mph sprint time of 1.72sec at
the Misano World Circuit, which puts it in the
same league as a modern Formula One Car.
To produce such sizzling figures, the Aspark
Owl has electricity flowing up and down its
drivetrain. There is no V12 here, instead a
64kWh battery that generates 1985bhp and
1475lb/ft – it’s about twice the power of a
Formula One Car but at 1900kgs, also double
the weight. These figures are almost identical to
the ones released with the prototype so kudos to
the team for sticking to their guns. Top speed
shoots beyond 250mph and just like with the
initial figures, range has remained at 280 miles
but presumably not at these speeds.
Aspark’s CEO Mansanori Yoshida told
reporters: “It’s a great honor for Aspark to be
the first to announce this achievement, reached
in a record time. When we first announced this
project, no one believed it could have been done.
It is true that we do not have a long history, but
we are now completing what is the first Japanese
electric hypercar.”
Little else is known about the Aspark Owl; we’re
not even sure where the all-wheel-drive system
is sourced from except to say ‘an outside
supplier.’ We do know that around fifty Aspark
Owls are expected to go on sale at a price of £2.5
million – roughly the same amount one might
expect to pay for a McLaren Speedtail. And that
might be Aspark’s problem because would you
rather say “I own an Aspark Owl” or “I own a
Mclaren Speedtail?” Nevertheless, we’re always
rooting for the underdog as all eyes now turn to
the stopwatch to see whether the Aspark Owl
really is the fastest car to 60mph.

ACTUALLY
MORE?
Tesla is never quiet for long, except this time
the wait isn’t for a new car but instead an
existing car that’s had its brain rewired. This
is the Model S which also happens to be the
nameplate that catapulted Tesla to the front
of the EV pack. In other words, it’s a big deal
despite its age. One doesn’t mess with the
brand’s flagship without making sure the
upgrades are entirely worth it, and in true
Elon fashion, stir up some controversy in the
process.
Let’s start with the most controversial
part. In a bid to reduce nearly everything
inside the cabin, the Model S made its public
debut with a steering wheel that looks more
like the control sticks on a light aircraft.
There will be no arm resting atop this wheel
because it has gone from circular-shaped to
U-shaped and raised some chin-scratching
questions in the process. Is this Elon just
being Elon or is there some tangible benefit
here that us ordinary mortals can’t yet see?
A clearer view to the dials is one
counterargument but how often have you
grabbed the top half of the wheel during a
parallel park? Let’s not even try to imagine the
consequences of doing a drift and grabbing a fist
of fresh air at the most crucial moment.
Of course, Elon believes that cars will be making
these difficult parking maneuvers by themselves
and therefore a traditional steering wheel is
unnecessary. This is also the explanation for the
lack of steering control stalks because according
to Elon, the car will anticipate and perform these
decisions for you. On Twitter Elon Musk was
quick to defend, “No more stalks,” he said. “Car
guesses drive direction based on what obstacles it
sees, context & nav map. You can override on the
touchscreen.”
Whatever the case, this hasn’t been entirely
confirmed for the production version but it is a
long way further than normal concept designs
dare to go. Elon isn’t the type of guy who goes
along with tradition, or rules, so the polarizing
wheel might still be a strong reality. Will it be a
gamechanger? Probably not.
While the decision on the wheel is uncertain,
we know quite a lot about the new Model S. New
wheel designs - of the rolling kind - are available,
the front bumper has been redesigned as well as
the rear diffuser. Tesla’s unique portrait screen

Polarizing on the inside
has been flipped through 90 degrees to landscape
and besides this extra computing power, it’ll now
be far more compatible with next-gen apps and
games. The latter was more likely to be played on
the new rear screen.
There are three new derivatives of Model S –
all of them fast. Really fast, like 0-60mph in 3.1
seconds in the version that supposedly focuses
more on achieving maximum range. Then there’s
Tesla’s new Plaid version which pumps the power
up to 1020hp and is good for 0-60mph in 1.99
seconds. Remember Tesla’s roadster prototype?
This is nearly as fast but in a sedan. The Plaid Plus
notches the power up again to 1100hp, will do
quarter-mile in under 9 seconds, manage 200mph
and have a range of around 530 miles.
However, good as these figures are, the EV world
has been leveled considerably since the Model S
was launched. Back then there was no Porsche
Taycan, for instance. Rather than relying on
performance alone, Elon now needs to bet on the
bespoke Tesla supercharger network and the
half-moon steering wheel to be the compelling
difference.

AND BASIL SOUP
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 50 minutes
Servings: 6-8

Ingredients
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 medium red onion, diced
• ½ tbsp crushed garlic
• 3.5lbs rosa tomatoes, halved
• 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil, plus extra for serving
• 2 tsp dried sweet basil
• 1 tbsp salt
• 1 tsp ground black pepper (optional)
• 4 heaped tsp paprika
• 3 tbsp raw honey
• 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
• 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
• 4 cups hot water
• thinly sliced moist beef jerky for serving (optional)
Instructions
• In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil and fry the onion until
golden brown. Add the garlic and stir.
• Add the rosa tomatoes, fresh basil, dried sweet basil, salt,
black pepper (if using), paprika, honey and balsamic
vinegar.
• Simmer for 10 minutes.
• Add the almond milk and hot water and simmer for a
further 40 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
• Blend to the desired texture and serve garnished with extra
fresh basil and thinly sliced moist jerky (if desired).
OVEN-ROASTED STUFFED BUTTERNUT
WITH WALNUTS AND CRANBERRIES
Prep time: 45 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients Instructions
• 1 large or 2 medium butternuts • Preheat the oven to 390°F and spray a baking tray with nonstick cooking spray.
• 1 tsp olive oil • Cut the butternuts in half and remove the seeds, reserving them for later. Place the butternut halves on the baking tray
• 1 large red salad onion, diced and bake for 45 minutes.
• 2oz carrots, diced • Allow to cool slightly and then scoop out some of the flesh to create more space for the stuffing. Keep this butternut
• 2oz celery, diced flesh.
• 8oz cooked brown basmati rice • Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the onion, carrots and celery until cooked.
• 1 handful of chopped fresh thyme • Add the butternut flesh along with the rest of the ingredients, except for the almond flour and rosemary, to the pan and
• 1 tsp dried sage mix well.
• 1 tsp onion powder • Scoop the stuffing into the butternut halves, scatter over the reserved butternut seeds and bake for another 10 minutes.
• 3oz dried cranberries • Dust with almond flour and garnish with fresh rosemary before serving.
• 3oz walnuts • Makes a perfect vegetarian meal on its own or can be served as an accompaniment to a protein of your choice.

CHICKEN FILLET
AND BUTTERNUT
TRAY BAKE
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 20-25 minutes

Ingredients
• 2.2lbs pre-cut butternut wedges or chunks
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 2 tbsp raw honey
• 1 pinch of salt, ground black pepper and paprika
• 4 large chicken fillets (about 6oz each)
• 1 medium red bell pepper, deseeded and cut into strips
• fresh thyme for garnishing
Sauce
• 1 medium red salad onion, diced
• 1 tsp salt
• ½ tsp ground black pepper
• 2 heaped tbsp tomato paste
• 1 tsp paprika
• 2 tbsp raw honey
• 1 heaped tbsp onion flakes
• 1 tsp onion powder
• 1 tbsp dried thyme
• 2 tbsp water

Instructions
• Preheat the oven to 390°F and spray a baking tray with
nonstick cooking spray.
• Cut a corner off the packet of butternut and microwave on
high for 12 minutes.
• Combine all the sauce ingredients
• Place the butternut in a large mixing bowl. Drizzle with the
olive oil and honey, and season with salt, black pepper and
paprika. Toss to coat and place on the greased baking tray.
• Cut slits into the chicken fillets, about half an inch (1cm)
apart and three-quarters of the way through. Tuck the red
bell pepper strips into the slits and place the fillets on the
baking tray on top of the butternut wedges.
• Scoop the sauce into the slits in the chicken with the bell
pepper strips.
• Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the chicken is cooked
through and the butternut is soft.
• Garnish with fresh thyme before serving.
LEMON CHIA SEED
MUFFINS
Prep time: 15min
Cooking time: 25-30min
Servings: 12 muffins

Ingredients
• 2 cans chickpeas drained and rinsed
• 6 tbsp raw honey plus extra for topping
• 3oz almond butter
• 1 tsp vanilla essence
• 2 tsp caramel essence
• 1 tsp bicarb of soda
• 3oz almond flour plus extra for topping
• 1 tsp of salt
• 1 heaped tbsp lemon zest plus extra for topping
• 1 lemon, juiced
• 2 heaped tbsp chia seeds
• 2 egg

Instructions
• Preheat oven to 360°F on thermo-fan and line a muffin pan
with paper muffin liners.
• Place the chickpeas in the bowl of the food processor and
blend until smooth. Add all the other ingredients, except the
eggs, and process on high for 3 to 5 minutes, scraping down
sides until the mixture is smooth and well blended. (If you
don’t have a food processor you can pulp the chickpeas with
a blender, add the rest of the ingredients and beat with an
electric beater for 2 minutes on high speed.)
• Beat the eggs in a separate bowl till light and fluffy, then add
to the mixture and beat for another 30 seconds to mix well.
• Scoop the mixture into the prepared muffin cups and top
each with a sprinkle of lemon zest, almond flour and a
drizzle of honey for a beautiful caramelized look.
• Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. The edges will be crispy and firm
to the touch while the center will remain moist and soft.
DESSERT BREAD
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Servings: 1

• 3 tsp olive oil • 2 tsp raw honey • Spray a frying pan with nonstick cooking spray and heat 1 tsp of the olive oil.
• 3 eggs • 3oz sliced banana • In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs, 1/2 tsp of salt and caramel essence until fluffy. If you are
• 1/2 tsp salt • a few sliced fresh making chocolate toast, add the cacao powder to the egg mixture now.
• 1 tsp caramel essence strawberries (optional) • Soak the bread in the egg, transfer to the pan and cook on both sides until almost crispy.
• 1 tsp raw cacao • 1 marshmallow, cut up • Allow to cool slightly before buttering each slice with the almond butter followed by the
powder (optional) (optional, for a naughty honey and a pinch of salt. Top one slice with the banana, strawberries (if using) marshmallow
• 2 slices bread of add-on) (if using), cinnamon and flaked almonds and use the other slice to close the sandwich.

 Happy to have you featured on FHM! Tell us
what are some of the things you did to prepare
for this shoot? Health and Fitness have always been
a part of my daily routine. I was very conscious of what
I was eating, maintained a strict workout regimen, and
made sure to stay hydrated. Also, I purchased an outfit
that would be perfect for this particular shoot.
You’ve got an amazing figure and beauty about
you, we’re keen to know what you would say is
your favorite physical feature about yourself
and why? My eyes…they are very expressive and
have the ability to draw people in and capture their
attention!
Being a glamorous model must have its perks,
what are some of your most memorable
experiences in your career? Seeing the results of
my very first shoot was extremely rewarding and gave
me the confidence to continue striving to reach my
goals.
What would you say sets you apart? As a mature
model, I am very proud of my physical appearance and
personal drive/attitude to succeed.
On the topic of men, what were the complete
best, and worst first impressions you’ve got on
a first date? Best: Someone who is considerate and a
good listener.

Worst: Someone who is self-centered and talks with

What would you say is the most surprising thing
about you that not many people know? I’ve been
a ICU Level 1 Trauma Nurse for 15 years.
If you had to choose, would you say money
and wealth determines success, or is it one’s
personal achievements and happiness? Personal
achievements/happiness…no doubt about it.
On a more personal level and in an ideal world,
where do you see yourself in five or ten years;
time in terms of family life, career, or both? Still
married to the love of my life and becoming a Cover
Model for a major magazine.
2020 was a challenging year for us all, what
advice would you give to other models or
aspiring models out there in light of all the
challenges faced? Every year will bring challenges…

People are changing their faces now more than ever!
 Ever since the pandemic hit us around the world, people have had
to do more video chats, video work conference calls, and show their
faces on-screens more than ever before. Because of this, people are
starting to notice and be self-conscious about their necks being too
big, their eyelids are droopy, their cheeks being too puffy, their lips
need more filler, their nose is not looking quite right, and much,
much more!
With this new facial cosmetic surgery trend taking place now
more than ever - for both males and females - FHM turned exclu-
sively to Dr. Daria Hamrah, who is one of the most popular and fa-
mous Oral and Maxillofacial / Facial Cosmetic Surgeons in America.
For years Dr. Hamrah has worked with some of the biggest stars and
people to perform Rhinoplasty, Face and Neck Lifts, and FaceTite /
NeckTites. And during COVID-19 he's seen a huge increase in pa-
tients wanting to change their faces.
From what celebrities people want to look like, to what trends
males are going under the knife to get done, plus how he still finds
time in the middle of the pandemic to give back, FHM went face-to-
face with Dr. Hamrah!

When did you decide and know you wanted to
help impact the world and go into the medi-
cal field to become a facial cosmetic surgeon?
Ever since I was a kid I loved helping others. I know
it sounds cliché but thinking back, that’s what I re-
member. When someone got hurt, I was the first
to get a Band-Aid and put it on the wound. If two
people were in a quarrel I found joy in trying to help
resolve their problem. Looking at what brings me
joy today, it’s the same reason that motivates me to
treat my patients every day – compassion! I always
thought I became a doctor because my father was
a doctor, but when I was asked by a student a few
years ago the same question (why did you become a
doctor?) I had to dig deep. When I went all the way
back to my childhood, it became very clear to me
that the joy of helping others to feel better physi-
cally and mentally!
How I got into “cosmetic surgery” was a result
of many things in my life professionally and person-
ally coming together. My father being a physician
and my mother being an artist has a lot to do with
who I am and how I was influenced growing up.
Both my parents fueled my passion for what I am
doing today. I double majored and excelled in both
art and science as I was passionate about both fields
and initially could not decide on my career path. I
knew that in order to be successful and happy it was
important to pursue my true passion. The natural
result was to become a facial cosmetic surgeon. It
fulfills me both intellectually and creatively. If I
was to pick my profession again, I would become a
facial cosmetic surgeon. To me, it is my passion and not a job!
You have worked with some of the biggest stars. How does it feel
knowing these celebrities trust you with their face, which is pret-
ty much their "money makers"? Honestly, it is the most humbling
feeling and that’s not just with celebrities and stars. With anyone for that
matter. I find it to be the most flattering thing when someone trusts their
face to me and I don’t take that responsibility lightly. For most people,
their appearance is one of their biggest assets. This is especially true with
a boom of influencers posting their pictures on social media outlets to
other celebrities who are in front of the camera every day. Another fact is
that truthfully, our first impression matters, no matter how we judge it.
We all judge people consciously or subconsciously within the first couple
of seconds by their appearance until we get to know them further and be-
come familiar with their personality. So people’s appearance is important
to them no matter whether they admit it or not. Having a more in-depth
understanding about facial anatomy, aging as well as the psychological
effects that come with them, I am very sensitive to my patient’s needs,
no matter who they are. When you treat everyone like a celebrity, then it
becomes easy. So as far as I am concerned, every patient is a celebrity and
that’s how I treat them. I genuinely care about them, because I know how
important it is for their self-esteem and self-confidence.
During the pandemic, people have had to do virtual meetings,
Zoom calls, Facetimes, etc... We read some statistics that more
and more people in the past year have been starting to get their
faces and necklines slimmed down so they look slimmer dur-
ing these virtual gatherings. Have you been seeing this happen
at your practice? That’s a great question! You could say that as a facial
cosmetic surgeon, that’s all I deal with and my practice has been blow-
ing up as a result of the above. I get up to 20 requests a week about facial
slimming and have done hundreds of procedures just in the past year as

a result. It has come to a point that I had
to develop a protocol with a combina-
tion of procedures to fulfill my patient’s
demands and needs. It’s been by far my
most popular combo- treatment that in-
cludes a combination of one or more of
the following procedures: 1. Facial/ Neck
Liposuction, 2. Facial/ Neck skin tighten-
ing using Radiofrequency Energy, 3. Buc-
cal Fat Pad Removal, 4. Botox to the jaw
muscle and neck muscle.
What other procedures are "in" right
now and trendy? Trendy procedures
are basically any procedures in the face.
Top of the list is Arbuckle fat pad removal
and neck liposuction and tightening. Due
to the fact that most people spend more
time on FaceTime or on Zoom calls they
pay more attention to their faces and
have more opportunity to examine their
faces and discover stuff they don’t like.
Whether it is droopy eyelids or eyebrows,
a big nose, facial wrinkles, a double chin
or a sagging neck. Again, what is making
the decision for many to take action and
improve their appearance, is the fact that
they have more time to recover from the
downtime and more savings as they have
not been spending their money on travel
or dining.
What about for men who want some
“MAN-Tenance” done?! What stuff
are males getting these days? Pretty
much the same as the above. Droopy eye-
lids that require eyelid lift Rhinoplasty or
chin augmentation and neck liposuction
to give them the more masculine jawline
and facial features. Many men are more
aware and conscious about their appear-
ance as their faces are more exposed on
social media, selfies and FaceTime calls.
Being a man myself, I know that as we
strive to stay fit and live a healthier life-
style, we now want to make sure that we
look the way we feel and look the best
version of ourselves. Some people call
it vanity which has to do with the old
stigma that is attached to it, I call it “self-
awareness” and “self-love”.

remember being so excited about my first
lecture until the first slide that popped at
the very beginning was a picture of an in-
fant with a wide-open cleft of the lip and
palate. Needless to say, I was shocked
and quite disturbed and was wondering
how this baby would be able to survive.
When my professor showed the postop-
erative picture after he had surgically
repaired the cleft, I was so amazed and
inspired that I chose to become an Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgeon. This event
marked the beginning of my career and
started a flame that never stopped burn-
ing. Interestingly, I never really got to
be involved with many of those patients
during my early career since the patient
population is very demographical and
mostly confined to Asia and South/Cen-
tral America.
On a random day, during my lunch
break, my old chief resident called me
after 13 years of not seeing or talking to
each other and asked me if I wanted to
join him on a cleft lip and palate mission
trip. It was at that moment when it be-
came clear to me that my calling had ar-
rived and the circle had now closed. The
best part was when I asked him about the
name of the foundation and the mission.
His response was: “Well, … here is the
thing, I thought we’d create it togeth-

 Any final thoughts, where do you see the future of
cosmetic surgery heading for the rest of this year and
into the future? If you look at the exponential increase of
cosmetic procedures performed in the past 20 years, the
number has exploded. This is especially true during the pan-
demic as people spend more tune on ZOOM and FaceTime
calls and have more time and money to spare for the proce-
dures and recovery time. In my opinion, this trend will con-
tinue even post-pandemic as the future of business, which is
people will continue to work in part or even full-time from
home via web calls. Now that we’ve tasted the benefits and
increased productivity as well as reduced cost of working
from home, this will forever have changed human behavior
and perception of the past. Also, facial cosmetic procedures
are becoming more non-invasive, painless and much more
efficient thanks to technological and medical advances. Pa-
tients are also having cosmetic surgeries at a younger age.
The average age of my patients has dropped by 10 years as
more millennials are open to cosmetic refinements and
understand the value of age prevention. They do not fear
judgment and on the contrary, show off their treatments
and openly talk with friends and on social media. They did
not grow up during a time when cosmetic procedures had a
negative stigma and are more open-minded. So, looking at
the future, when today’s millennials turn 40-50 years old,
they will be seeking cosmetic surgery without hesitation. I
feel that it will be something as normal as getting their hair
or nails done.
