KUNG FU PANDA 4 and DUNE: PART TWO Carry the Box Office

After last weekend produced the largest box office of the year at $139.9M, turnstiles slowed down this weekend with total
ticket sales of $88.2M. One year ago on this weekend, SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS led all films with $30.1M in its opening
three days. This year, the top two movies were holdovers KUNG FU PANDA 4 and DUNE: PART TWO, with Lionsgate’s
ARTHUR THE KING as the only new movie in wide release.
Looking ahead, energy will come from Sony’s 3/21 release of GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE and Warner Bros.’ 3/28
release of GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE. Both movies have $100M+ potential for their domestic runs. However, it
will be a tall order the two films together to match the success of THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE last year, which opened
on Wednesday 4/5/23, and earned $574.9M domestic in its extended 19-week run.
KUNG FU PANDA 4 finished in first place with a second-weekend gross of $30.0M, a decline of 48% from its opening
weekend. After 10 days, the animated sequel has brought in $107.7M domestic, which holds up well in comparison to the
2008 original KUNG FU PANDA which earned $117.3M domestic in its first 10 days.

The movie’s backers are delighted that Chapter 4 has earned $107.7M in its first ten days, which is 92% of the take from the
original KUNG FU PANDA movie at this same point. This is especially positive given the downward box office trend of PANDA
movies 2 and 3. Of course, the rise in ticket prices over the past 15 years has played a role in raising grosses for PANDA 4.
The availability of moviegoers during the spring break period and on Easter weekend (3/29-3/31) may give an additional kick
to PANDA 4’s results. The movie’s 10-day domestic total has already exceeded its $85M production budget and an
international tally of $145.5M makes it look even better. Based on this success, we expect that Universal will greenlight at
least one more PANDA movie.
DUNE: PART TWO finished in second place for the second consecutive weekend, earning $29.1M, a drop of 37% from last
weekend. After 17 days, DUNE 2 has outperformed Denis Villeneuve’s first DUNE movie by a lot, with the domestic total
coming in at 244% compared to the original and worldwide total at 130%.

Despite a hefty production budget of $190M, DUNE: PART TWO appears to be on track for profitability. DUNE in 2021 had
a worldwide gross of $336.4M after 17 days and wound up earning $433.9M. If DUNE2 follows this same trajectory it will
end with $567.8M worldwide, easily clearing the 2.5X multiple of its production budget which is widely considered to be
the break-even point for a Hollywood movie.
Finishing in third place is Lionsgate’s ARTHUR THE KING, which took in $7.5M in its opening weekend. The film stars Mark
Wahlberg in the 52nd movie of his 30-year career. All his films together have grossed an amazing $3.2B worldwide. ARTHUR
THE KING is a classic “Man and His Dog” story, based on actual events surrounding a competition called the Adventure
Racing World Series, with categories of competition including trekking, mountain biking, and paddling. Wahlberg plays
Michael Light, a competitor in the event who convinces a sponsor to fund his team for one last chance to compete.
Wahlberg befriends a dog named Arthur and over the course of 10 days and 435 miles across the terrain of the Dominican
Republic, they are pushed to their limit. The two become separated at one point, but are eventually able to find each other
and reunite. Critics have rated it a lukewarm 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences are touched by the drama, giving it a
98% score. This discrepancy is not unusual for a Wahlberg picture, a veritable crowd-pleaser. The production budget for
the movie was a tightly controlled $20M, giving it a good chance to reach profitability.
The Lionsgate and Blumhouse horror film IMAGINARY slotted into fourth place with $5.6M in its second weekend, a decline
of 44%. After 10 days, the film has earned $19.1M domestically. The only other horror film to open in wide release this
year was Universal’s NIGHT SWIM, which also earned $19.1M in its first ten days (1/5 - 1/14). Since IMAGINARY is running
dead even with NIGHT SWIM, it may also wind up with a similar box office of the earlier title, which came in at $32.4M
domestic. However, IMAGINARY’s prospects will be challenged next week when a new horror movie hits theaters, Neon’s
IMMACULATE starring Sydney Sweeny.
Angel Studios’ CABRINI dropped to fifth place this weekend with a disappointing gross of $2.8M, a steep decline of 61%
from last weekend’s opening. This is the sharpest second weekend drop for any of the five Angel Studios movies to-date:

With the notable exception of SOUND OF FREEDOM, which had an extraordinary 39% increase in its second weekend, the
other Angel Studios features have dropped between 51% to 60% in their second weekend. This is roughly in line with an
expected 50% drop for most films. CABRINI’s drop of 61% is a rude awakening for Angel Studios’ which has been celebrated
as a success story in the industry. What’s more, CABRINI is carrying strong ratings of 90% from critics and 98% from
audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Scores in that range usually lead to extended runs with solid returns. CABRINI’s results are
disappointing, especially because the studio invested $50M to produce the film which is by far the highest budget for any
film it has made. We’ll watch closely to see if declines moderate next weekend. If it can hold on until Easter weekend, it
could be in line for a comeback of sorts.

Megamerger Dreams Are Dying - and Hollywood May Be Better Off

Over the past two decades, Hollywood has been
supercharged by mega-mergers among the major players in
media and entertainment. Disney went on an industry
buying spree with stops at Pixar (2006), Marvel (2009),
Lucasfilm (2012) and 21st Century Fox (2019). Comcast
scooped up Universal Studios in 2011 and Warner Bros. was
swallowed twice, first in 2018 by AT&T and then by
Discovery in 2022.
These mergers changed the industry by reducing the
number of studios making films for the theatrical market.
At the time, many analysts supported these consolidations
as beneficial by increasing scale and reducing costs.
Shareholders were rewarded with steep increases in the
share price of the remaining companies. Low interest rates
made debt financing affordable and the U.S. Federal Trade
Commission approved these mogul maneuvers.
However, much higher interest rates have taken hold over
the last few years, which has contributed to a new focus by
investors on profitability over growth. Just making interest
payments on the debt left over from these mergers was
becoming expensive. In 2021, Linda Khan was appointed as
the new chief of the Federal Trade Commission, and under
her stewardship the agency became much more suspicious
of consolidation among the largest companies in the US
economy. Under her leadership, more proposed deals have
been challenged, leading to a sharp decline in this activity.
For the foreseeable future, it seems that the pace of new
mergers among media giants will be slow to non-existent.
At the end of 2023, there were multiple reports that
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav was pursuing an
acquisition of Paramount. However, WBD’s fourth quarter
earnings highlighted a company struggling to turn a profit,
and struggling with a large amount of debt. As a result, its
stock price dropped significantly, making it even more
challenging to pursue any large acquisitions. Moreover, the
FTC would certainly “review” any proposed merger with
Paramount, making the actual pursuit both time consuming
and expensive. In fact, Zaslav has confirmed that his
interest has cooled in exploring a deal for Paramount.

Pete Distad Named CEO of Fox, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports
Streaming Joint Venture

This week, Pete Distad was announced as CEO of the new month and is positioned as a replacement to traditional
sports streaming platform that is being created as a joint cable. The price of the new sports-focused service will need
venture with support from Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. to be significantly lower, in order to hit a stated goal of
Discovery. Distad’s previous experience includes a decade having 5 million subscribers within five years of its launch.
at Apple TV+ as their head of business, operations, and
global distribution of sports. In that position Distad
oversaw a deal between Apple and Major League Soccer
(MLS) to create MLS Season Pass, which gave Apple TV+
users access to all MLS games. Before Apple, Distad was
one of the founding executives at Hulu from 2007-2013. His
background in launching Hulu and managing sports deals at
Apple made him as an ideal candidate to head the launch of
this new streaming service.
The service will roll up sports programming from ESPN,
ESPN+, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, FOX, FS1, Pete Distad
FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, truTV, as well as the ABC network. The
price point for subscribers has yet to be determined but will
most likely settle in at $35-$50 per month. A somewhat
comparable service is YouTube TV, which costs $72.99 per

suffered through a hair raising first
two months of the year, with a thin
slate of new releases and a diminutive
box office. The domestic market,
which includes the U.S. and Canada,
has generated only 82% of total from
the same two months in 2023, and
62% of gross from January and
February in 2019. Hopefully, the
upturn resulting from March releases
DUNE: PART TWO and KUNG FU
PANDA 4 have marked an end to these
dark days.
Cineplex, Canada’s largest exhibitor,
announced its box office receipts for
January and February, with evidence
that it has outperformed the average
North American box office. Their key
to this relative success is income from
foreign titles, which contributed 20%
of the total gross. Two of Cineplex’s
top ten films in January and February
were the Bollywood titles with
FIGHTER and WARNING 2. FIGHTER
was particularly successful, becoming
one of its best-performing Bollywood
films of all time.
Cineplex serves as an interesting case
study during this difficult period.
After a rough start to the year, the
“cinema is dead” refrain is
resurfacing. However, Cineplex’s
results show clearly that when
compelling movies are presented,
people will turn out to theatres to
enjoy them. Unlike Hollywood,
Bollywood studios did not suffer from
labor strikes last year and kept
cranking out work. For Canada, a
country with a relatively higher
percentage of the population coming
from India and other South Asian
countries, these Bollywood titles have
been particularly impactful. China has
also seen record-breaking grosses
thus far in 2024, indicating that the
box office is directly linked to the
quality and quantity of content. This
should give exhibitors hope for better
days ahead, as the back half of 2024 is
filling up with new releases from
major studios.

KUNG FU PANDA 4
VERDICT: Brisk, exciting, and genuinely funny, ‘Kung Fu
Panda 4’ is the highlight of this long-running franchise,
furthering the hero’s journey to enlightenment, working
wonders with its ensemble cast, and embracing the
philosophical spirit of kung fu.

The Kung Fu Panda movies aren’t all classics, but they are
all remarkable. They’ve not only resisted the urge to
deluge audiences with immediately-dated pop culture
references — the bane of 2000s animated movies,
popularized by another DreamWorks blockbuster, Shrek –
but even though every film does feature a panda fighting
bad guys with kung fu, they’ve also resisted the urge to
repeat the same story over and over again. Po, the titular
panda voiced by Jack Black, doesn’t relearn old lessons.
He continues to evolve as a character and this film series
is better for it.
Before “kung fu” became synonymous with martial arts,
the term referred to effort and discipline, the
achievement of expertise by doing hard work and
genuinely earning it.
