Recount texts: The purpose of a recount is to inform or entertain by retelling

past events or experiences. You can recount personal events, factual incidents or
imaginary incidents.

The structure of the text is:

An orientation which tells about who, when and where the event or incident
occurred.

The detailing of a sequence/list of events in the order in which they happened.


Throughout, there may be some personal comment about the events.

Some language features of a recount are:

•mainly past tense verbs

•action/doing verbs ie walked/caught/saw/played/bought

•adverbial phrases ie on the way/in the city/on the train

•specific participants ie my friend/his daughter/our neighbours

•personal comment ie I really liked it/some people were a bit afraid

•details of time ie about two o'clock/after lunch/in the morning
