RECOUNT TEXT

Recount text is a type of text whose content retells a real event or activity that happened
to someone in the past. The purpose of this text is to retell the true story of the past as well as
to entertain its readers.

1. Social Function

 The function of the text is to retell events for the purpose of informing or
entertaining their audience.

2. General Structure

 Orientation: introduction of information about characters, places, and when


events or activities occur in the past.
 Events: a series of events or activities that occur. Usually told sequentially, for
example "On the first day, ... The second day, ..." (On the first day, ... On the
second day, ...).
 Reorientation: the end of the story and is optional.

3. Language Features

 Recount text usually has certain linguistic elements, for example as follows:
 Noun: certain nouns as person pronouns, like people's names.
 Past tense: using past form verbs, such as went, visited, worked, etc.
 Time connective: conjunctions of time to sort events, for example after,
before, then, after that, etc.
 Action verbs: verbs that indicate events or activities, for example stayed,
climbed, wrote, etc.
 Adverbs: words / description phrases to indicate time, place, and method, for
example yesterday, last year, at home, slowly, carefully, etc.

4. Kind of Recount Text


Recount text has several types of text that you can use for writing. Adapted to the
purpose of the writing itself. Various types of recount text can be seen below:

 Personal Recount

Personal recount is a recount text that functions to tell about the author's
personal experience.
 Factual Recount

Factual recount is a recount text that serves to present reports of events that
have actually occurred, such as experimental reports of science or police reports.

 Imaginative

Imaginative is a type of recount text that serves to present an imaginative


story. Then write down the events or events that have occurred.

5. Example

 Orientation:

On Friday, there was a football match between Indonesia and Japan. It held
on Gelora Bung Karno stadium. I went to Gelora Bung Karno stadium with my
friend, Jono.

 Events:

Before entering Gelora Bung Karno stadium, we looked the bus that took
Indonesian football players. Then, we followed that bus to main-entrance. I found
that Bambang Pamugkas left from the bus. When, we wanted to get close to
Bambang Pamungkas, a security guard held me back. But, I thinked that security
guard was familiar. He was my old friend, Budi. After that, he let me in, finally i
could meet Bambang Pamungkas and got his signature.

 Reorientation:

Next, I went back to my seat at the stadium and the match just began. It was
an amazing day and good match.

6. Difference
Recount text presents the past experience in order of time or place; what happened on
Sunday, then on Monday, then on Tuesday. Recount describe series of event in detail. It does
not expose the struggle on how to make then happened smoothly.
