With a presentation to the pub-
lic on this years budget looming
Monday, April 28, the Tabernacle
Township Committee is working
to ensure its residents know
where their taxes are going.
Township administrator Doug
Cramer went through the 2014
municipal budget department by
department and line by line in a
presentation to the township
committee. Residents could ex-
pect a tax increase of approxi-
mately 8 percent, roughly $59, ac-
cording to municipal accountant
Kevin Frenia.
The townships recent re-
assessment is partially responsi-
ble for the proposed tax increase.
On average, the value of the
township went down, Frenia
said. The average residence saw
a decrease in value of 10.84 per-
cent. If the assessed value of the
township goes down, the tax rate
has to increase.
The average assessed value for
homes in Tabernacle dropped
from $296,220 to $264,109, lowering
the value of the township or prop-

The Golden Eagle girls track
team of Seneca High School is off
to a fast start. The Golden Eagles
are soaring over early season hur-
dles. Seneca is looking to track
down its competitors and field a
winning season.
Use whatever clich youd like,
the point is, the girls track team
of Seneca High School is poised
for a big season after returning a
number of contributors from last
season and welcoming a few
promising newcomers.
We have a lot of new girls who
have shown potential in the hur-
dles, and I am anxious to see
where this takes us this year and
years to follow, head coach
Laura Heenan said.
Heenan is in her third year at
the helm for the Golden Eagles,
compiling a 7-1 career record in
divisional dual meets.
Seneca graduated three
starters from a season ago who
are now competing at the colle-
giate level Katie Grovatt at Bay-
lor University, Paige Macaukey at
Virginia Tech and Brynn Mac-
Dougall at Roanoke College. De-
spite the losses, Heenan still
fields a deep roster comprised of
both seniors and underclassmen.

INTERIMPUBLISHER
have always been our 4x400 and 4x800 re-
lays. However, this year, we have a lot of
new girls to the sport and spread across all
event areas so it is hard to tell. This season,
I would like to establish a competitive shut-
tle hurdle team early on, Heenan said.
The goal of a successful hurdle team
was met early in the season. At the Hall of
Fame Relays held at Maple Shade High
School the weekend of April 6, the Golden
Eagles won the shuttle hurdle races and
the distance medley relay. Senecas pres-
ence was felt in a number of other events
as well.
We also placed second in the sprint
medley and third in the high jump relay.
The first-place medalists included four
first-year runners, freshmen Alexia Fo-
tiou, Kayla Martin and Sabrina Helvie, as
well as sophomore Danielle Packard,
Heenan said.
The Golden Eagles return five letter
winners from a season ago in senior hur-
dler and sprinter Moriah Webb, senior dis-
tance runner Mara Schiffauer, senior
jumper Jess Packard, junior thrower
Kayln Bryan and sophomore middle dis-
tance runner Joey Webb. Both Kayla Mar-
tin and Kayla Johnson are first-year con-
tributors with promise this season and
going forward, Heenan said.
We have an invested and knowledge-
able coaching staff and of course the spirit
and enthusiasm for a successful season,
Heenan said.

T
he old saying is that numbers
dont lie. Numbers are what
they are; interpret them how
you will.
Here are a few for you to ponder:
Five: How many of Atlantic Citys
11 casinos lost money on an operating
basis for the first nine months of the
fiscal year, through September
One: How many Atlantic City casi-
nos went out of business this year
the Atlantic Club plus one more
Revel which is up for sale following
bankruptcy
$10.3 million: The amount of rev-
enue from online wagering in New
Jersey in February, on pace for $123.6
million for the year, well short of Gov.
Christies original $1 billion forecast.
$12 million: The estimated tax rev-
enue from internet gambling through
the end of the fiscal year in June, com-
pared to the forecast of $160 million
$235 million: The amount of gam-
bling revenue brought in by AC casi-
nos last year, a 35 percent drop from
2012, a year that included a casino
shutdown due to Hurricane Sandy
39: The number of states that offer
casino gambling, compared to two in
1988
2 million: The number of visitors
Atlantic City bused in from surround-
ing areas last year, compared to 14 mil-
lion not long ago
The numbers dont lie not only is
Atlantic City failing, so is gambling
nationwide. Even in Las Vegas, the
gambling capital of the world, gam-
bling revenue was down to only $6.5
billion last year.
New casinos in that Nevada city are
focusing on other luxurious offerings
other than gambling, such as restau-
rants, nightclubs, pools, shopping,
spas and entertainment.
Over the last few years, Atlantic
City has begun to do the same with the
Tanger Outlets, The Pier Shops at Cae-
sars and the dining and nightlife at the
Borgata.
But is it enough? The numbers
would say that its not, or at the very
least, that more needs to be done to
make Atlantic City a bigger tourist
destination, serving more than just
the gambler.
Like it or not, Atlantic City is vital
for the states economy. Lucky for us, it
has easy access, beachfront property
and plenty of name recognition to
bounce back in a serious way.
in our opinion
Did the gamble on AC fail?
If so, then the state needs to find an alternative source of revenue fast
Your thoughts
Can Atlantic City rebound without
gambling? What are your ideas for how it
can become a tourist destination for more
than just gamblers? Share your thoughts
through a letter to the editor.

APRIL 1622, 2014 THE TABERNACLE SUN 9
erties from $73 million to $66 mil-
lion.
Cramer said both the engineer-
ing budget as well as public works
would see substantial budget in-
creases in 2014.
Public works will see an in-
crease to cover salt purchases
that are more than $30,000 already
this year and repairs are $10,000
more than we expected. We are
cutting the road striping program
and solid waste collection to keep
costs down as best as we can,
Cramer said. Engineering went
up $80,000 to deal with a number
of grant projects that dont allow
engineering fees to be taken out of
the grant.
Overall, the township has
$850,000 budgeted for capital ex-
penses. Sooy Place Road as well as
the community services building
will be the likely recipients of
that money.
Weve looked into doing the
Sooy Place Road repairs in phas-
es, but really the road needs to be
paved from end to end, Cramer
said.
When looking into estimates a
year ago, Cramer said the cost for
Sooy Place Road repairs would be
approximately $700,000. Commit-
teeman Richard Franzen suggest-
ed some of the capital expense
budget be used for sprucing up
the community services building.
We have to get that building
going and get it to where we all
want it to be, Franzen said.
Many of the operating expens-
es for the township remain the
same or saw slight increases,
such as emergency management,
construction and general repairs.
Power, street lighting and heating
will remain the same.
According to Cramer, the town-
ship is still waiting on word from
the state in terms of possible aid
and grant applications. Taberna-
cle and Shamong townships have
a joint service agreement for the
repaving of Tuckerton Road and
are awaiting word on the status of
a state Department of Trans-
portation grant to finish the proj-
ect.
