Lancaster Barnstormers manager
Butch Hobson is itching to provide the
championship that he promised the Lan-
caster faithful when he was named man-
ager in October of 2010.
Hobson led his team to within a run of
the title in 2012. And he would like noth-
ing better than to secure the Atlantic
League crown this year during the sea-
son-long celebration of the Barnstorm-
ers 10th campaign.
Thats always the goal is to win the
championship, Hobson said. Were ex-
cited. I think were ready to go. Im look-
ing forward to it (the season).
The Barnstormers will start the year
with a very good, deep pitching staff.
They also appear to be good defen-
sively. But they have struggled (at least
through the rst three exhibition games
that have occurred before this article
went to press) on offense.
We know that and were looking
into that, Hobson said hinting that he is
searching for a big bat to be part of the
lineup. But for now, were going to win
with what we have.
What they have is a starting rotation
of Chris Schwinden, Chad Beck, Clayton
Tanner, Cody Scarpetta and Brian Gren-
ing, who was with the Barnstormers last
season before leaving to pitch in Taiwan.
What Ive seen, so far, are guys,
with really good stuff, said Schwinden,
who along with Beck has major league
experience. Im kind of surprised that
theyre here (and not in afliated ball).
Schwinden is
scheduled to start the
season opener in Sug-
ar Land on Thursday.
The rest of the staff
includes three right-
handed side-armers.
Shunsuke Watanabe,
who pitched 13 sea-
sons in the majors in
Japan, nearly scrapes
the ground with his
knuckles when he
pitches.
Tim Dillard, who
spent six games with
Lancaster last season
before signing with
Milwaukee and play-
ing at Triple-A Nash-
ville, also comes from
the side, as does another returning Barn-
stormer, Brodie Downs.
Were really excited about the arms
we have, said pitching coach Rich
Rundles, who is in his rst season as a
coach and was a member of the Storm-
ers pitching staff last season. We have
some power arms and then, obviously,
we have the guys throwing from the dif-
ferent arm angles.
Manheim Township graduate Pete
Andrelczyk, who spent six seasons in
the Miami Marlins organization before
being released this spring, will likely be
the closer.
Jason Richardson and The Mayor
Ross Peeples are also back in the bull-
pen.
Championship dreams in anniversary season

Even today, when Stephanie Stevie
Grimes of suburban Washington D.C.
returns to Lancaster County, she gets a
smile as she drives through the country-
side here.
Especially when she comes to some
major crossroads here, because it makes
her think of her late father, former Lan-
caster Mayor Richard Scott.
Well say, Remember when Daddy
thought it would be good to have the
baseball park go here? It seemed like
every time we came up for a visit while
he was still alive, hed show us a place
they had in mind for the ballpark, she
recalls.
This coming opening night, thousands
of baseball fans will again see the mural
of Scott, who died in 2005, at the main
entrance of Clipper Magazine Stadium,
when the Lancaster Barnstormers begin
their 10th season.
It was Scott who led a team of local
business and political leaders (along
with a nationally-known
person or two ... former
Major League Baseball
Commissioner Bowie Kuhn
and David Eisenhower,
the son-in-law of President
Nixon and grandson of
President Eisenhower), who
labored for a decade and a
half to bring baseball back
to Lancaster.
And while they had no
idea what the future held
when they rst met in 1989,
nearly everyone involved in
the effort today will tell you
it was worth it.
It is a jewel for the
community, and it is a place
for fans to come for inex-
pensive fun and entertain-
ment, says Kevin Harley,
who calls himself just the
leadoff man for the base-
ball effort. He had helped to
form the baseball commit-
tee a quarter-century ago
with the late Jim Huber, at
the time a Lancaster County
commissioner.
Nothing makes me hap-
pier than going to a baseball
game here with my kids,
Harley says.
Theres no doubt that
this project has served the
entire county, and it brings
everybody in the area
together, says Tom
Baldrige, president and
CEO of The Lancaster
Chamber of Commerce
& Industry.
Probably the 6,000-
seat stadiums greatest
long-term impact is its
role of bringing people
to the city who havent
been here in years or
perhaps decades, Bald-
rige says.
Those are the kind
of subtle, positive
impacts that are hard to
quantify.
Another baseball
committee member,
local real estate profes-
sional Scott Bradbury,
calls the park just a
dream that became a
vision that become a
reality.
I was honored to just be part of a
great group, he said.
Harley cites Scotts positive-minded
leadership and the tireless work of com-
mittee members like then-state Rep.
Jere Strittmatter as keys to bringing the
ballpark here.
Harley had written to David Eisen-
hower to tell him about the Lancaster
effort, then never heard from him, until
one day his phone rang.
It was Eisenhower, a huge baseball
fan, and he and Harley talked about the
game for a good 45 minutes.
Bring Baseball Back to Lancaster
Committee members agree a key mo-
ment was when Lancasters then-mayor,
Arthur Morris, suggested they bring
aboard a former mayor, Scott.
Everyone agrees Scott (a great man,
a great human being, and a great leader,
Harley says) was the one who wouldnt
let go of the ballpark dream when others
got discouraged.
In the 1990s, the committee worked
to get permission from cities like Har-
risburg and Reading, who have minor
league teams afliated with a major
league team, to bring an
afliated team to Lancaster,
which was considered the
territory of those teams.
It wasnt until they
started working with the
Atlantic League, which as
an independent league is
not afliated with the major
leagues, that they had a
way around the territorial
problem.
Then, Scott, Harley and
the others studied possible
ballpark sites, most of them
in Lancasters suburbs. They
eventually would consider,
in one way or another, 40
possible sites.
A vacant eld on Fruit-
ville Pike, across from Red
Rose Commons (now slated
to become the Belmont
development) was consid-
ered a leading candidate for
a ballpark site until angry,
even ugly, residential op-
position to the park stopped
the plan in 2002.
The neighbors didnt
want the trafc, lights, noise
and other things they feared
a ballpark would bring.
The baseball park idea
for Lancaster seemed ... if

not dead, at least in serious jeopardy.
They needed a two-out miracle. And
they got one.
Business leaders like David Nikol-
off heard that a blighted area of North
Prince Street, which Lancaster leaders
had been eyeing hopefully for possible
development for a half-century, was for
sale.
Owner Norfolk Southern let it be
known the land was for sale, and Nikol-
off, then executive director of the Lan-
caster County Economic Development
Corp., got the go-ahead to buy it.
EDC also agreed to buy at least three
other parcels along North Prince so the
site was large enough to congure a
ballpark.
Then, the county Redevelopment
Authority agreed to take ownership of
the land for the stadium.
Gov. Ed Rendell came to the then-
vacant site ballpark site in June 2003
with the all-important $10 million check
for the ballpark.
The name Barnstormers was
selected by fans later in 2003, and the
long-awaited groundbreaking was held
in spring 2004.
Meanwhile, Barnstormer front-ofce
ofcials like Keith Lupton, Jon Danos
and the teams rst GM, Joe Pinto, were
building relationships in the Lancaster
community and laying the groundwork
for the team.
But after all the ups and downs there
was one more scare, Nikoloff recalls.
Months before the park was to open,
the state said Lancaster needed to have
a second entrance into the stadium
from Harrisburg Pike, to go with the
one on North Prince, or else things
would get delayed once more.
Nikoloff and his EDC board wound
up buying land from Jiffy Lube so the
all-important second entrance, a wind-
ing, curving entrance by the parks
left-eld area, could be created and the
stadium could open as scheduled in
2005.
Kristen Simon, now the team general
manager, wasnt working here yet on
that rst opening night, but she was
completely awed by seeing the nished
ballpark for the rst time.
I had never seen such a profession-
al, high level of detail in a minor league
park, and that made me want to be a
part of the magic that I experienced
that night as a fan, she says.
Nikoloff points out what having base-
ball has meant to this area.
Remember, it was only a few years
before the stadium that the last depart-
ment store left downtown Lancaster,
Watt & Shand.
Local leaders had tried unsuccessful-
ly to get Harrisburg Area Community
College to come downtown, then there
was a lengthy ght over the new conven-
tion center, Nikoloff notes.
But then came the baseball park.
They delivered a beautiful stadium
that has become a great community as-
set. Its a feel-good story, Nikoloff said.
People forget how many people said it
was a dumb idea, but I dont notice those
people around any more complaining
about it.
And that development in the north-
western part of the city is only starting,
and more is going to follow.
The ballpark area also has been new
projects like the new YMCA complex,
the Lancaster Arts Hotel and others.
Scott died just months before the
rst game, but family members proud-
ly gathered the very day the stadium
opened for the dedication of his mural,
its $30,000 cost raised by private dona-
tions.

P
ete Andrelczyk is happy to be
home.
OK, he would rather be play-
ing for a team that has a major league
connection. But hes looking forward
to pitching for the rst time in front of
family and friends for the Lancaster
Barnstormers.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-hander
was released in spring training after six
seasons in the Miami Marlins organiza-
tion.
Its bittersweet, said Andrelczyk, a
2004 Manheim Township grad. Obvious-
ly, you want to stay as long as you can in
afliated ball, thats the bitter part. But
its super nice to be able to come home. I
rarely got to pitch in front of my family.
Andrelczyk was 18-20 with a 2.98
ERA in 191 minor league games, all but
two of those in relief.
He brings a lot of experience,
Stormers pitching coach Rich Rundles
said. Hes just a gamer, loves to pitch,
loves to compete. He goes out there and
attacks. Hes got a good, live arm, good
sinker and a good slider to come off of it.
So hes going to be exciting to watch.
Andrelczyk reached Triple-A, putting
up impressive stats for New Orleans in
2011. He was 4-1 with a 1.49 ERA in 21
games. But despite those numbers, he
never got the call to go to the majors.
I can control what I do, said Andrel-
czyk, not what anyone else does. There
are certain
days you
get frus-
trated but
you have to
realize that
no matter
where you
are, youre
a step
away. Its a
matter of
something
falling
your way.
I
stopped
getting
frustrated
when I realized that I was doing every-
thing physically, emotionally I could do.
So when I get to that point, that Im not
leaving anything on the eld and Im not
leaving anything in the weight room.
It helps to think like that instead of get-
ting frustrated.
Andrelczyk acquired his Zen-like ap-
proach to the game from pitching coach
Drew Thomas during his collegiate ca-
reer at Coastal Carolina. Thomas taught
pitch grips and pitching mechanics but
also tutored Andrelczyk on the mental
side of the game. Some of those lessons
came on the golf course.
The team had Mondays off so they
would hit the links. Not a bad way to
spend the day, especially when you are
attending college near Myrtle Beach.
I didnt understand why we were
doing it at rst, Andrelczyk said.
(But golf), its exactly the same as pitch-
ing. Every shot you hit is a completely
new entity, a new experience. So every
pitch you throw has nothing to do with
the last pitch. It doesnt matter if it was
phenomenal or terrible. If you take that
last pitch with you, its going to affect the
next one.
After redshirting his rst season,
Andrelczyk played three years in col-
lege. He was drafted in the 32nd round
by Baltimore in 2007. But despite his
moms family being Orioles fans, he did
not sign.
After the 2008 season, he was drafted
in the fth round by the Marlins and
began his pro career.
I know I can still pitch, he said.
This is an opportunity (with the Barn-
stormers) to showcase my talent. Show I
can still do everything that I was capable
of before.
Hes not going to be with us long,
said Stormers skipper Butch Hobson,
who believes Andrelczyk will sign with
an MLB organization soon. Guys got a
2.98 ERA, so hes had success. He comes
right at you. I like that. Hes denitely
going to help the back side of our bull-
pen.
Andrelczyk, who is 28, is not sure how
much longer he wants to play. Eventu-
ally, he wants to teach (he needs a few
more credits to complete his elementary
education degree) and coach.
There are things Id like to do after
Im done (playing), he said. Right now,
I dont know when Im going to be done.
But I dont want to go into coaching or
teaching if I think I can still play.
The Barnstormers think he can still
play and will enjoy his efforts out of the
bullpen during what they believe will be
a short stay.
Ill have to make that decision at
some point (about retiring), but its not
today, he said.

any Barnstormers have
come to Lancaster with
big league experience
but just ve have made it to, or
back to, the majors, from Lan-
caster.
Heres a look at each one:
From Lancaster to the majors
Tom Cochran (left) The
lefty never pitched in a ma-
jor league game, but did get
called up by the Cincinnati
in 2011.
Cochran was 3-2 with a
4.67 ERA in seven games
for the Barnstormers in
2009.
Jerome Williams (right) The Ha-
waii native had totaled 91 major league
appearances but had not been in the
bigs since 2007 when he signed with
the Barnstormers in 2011. After going
6-0 with a 2.91 ERA in eight games for
Lancaster, the right-hander was signed
by the L.A. Angels and ended up in
their rotation.
Still in the majors, he is currently
pitching for the Houston Astros.
Matt Watson (below) The Mc-
Caskey grad made his major league
debut and played 15 games with the
Mets in 2003 and he got back to the
bigs with Oakland in 2005.
Watson played part of the 2010
and 11 seasons with Lancaster. Dur-
ing the 2010 season, he re-signed
with the Athletics after 30 games
with the Barnstormers.
Following 37 games at Triple-A
Sacramento, Watson was promoted
to Oakland. During a 12-game stint
that season, which was cut short by
kidney stones, he hit his rst major
league home run.
Scott Patterson (left) An original Barnstormer, Pat-
terson started the rst-ever game at Clipper Magazine Sta-
dium. After he became the Stormers closer, he was signed
by the New York Yankees in 2006. He reached the majors
for a game with the Yanks in 2008 and three with the San
Diego Padres later in the same season. He totaled four in-
nings, did not get a decision and compiled a 2.25 ERA in the
majors
He is the only Barnstormer to ever reach the big leagues
without having been there before.
Yoslan Herrera (above)
The Cuban defector
pitched out of the Barn-
stormers bullpen last sea-
son, compiling a 2-1 record
with a 3.74 ERA in 59 relief
appearances. The right-
hander pitched in ve
games for the Pirates in
2008 and he returned to the
majors this season, getting
called up recently to pitch
in relief for the Angels.

The 2006 title
1 The Barnstormers win their only champi-
onship in just their second season. After nish-
ing rst in the South Division in both the rst
and second halves, Lancaster, led by hometown
manager Tom Herr, sweeps through the play-
offs, going 5-0, beating the Atlantic City Surf in
the rst round and the Bridgeport Bluesh in
the nals.
Stormers ace Denny Harriger pitches a
complete game, getting the victory in the 5-2
title-clinching contest before a packed house of
red-clad, towel-waving fans at Clipper Maga-
zine Stadium.
Jeremy Todd is named the playoff MVP
after hitting .478 with a slugging percentage of
1.310. And despite the playoffs lasting just ve
games, he set records for runs scored (11) and
RBIs (12) and tied a record for home runs (4).
Stadium groundbreaking
2 After more than two decades of trying,
baseball is nally returning to Lancaster. On
April 28, 2004 (longtime baseball advocate
and former Lancaster Mayor Richard Scotts
86th birthday) ground is broken for a stadium
on North Prince Street. After Eastern League
teams blocked efforts to bring an afliated
franchise to Lancaster, a team from the Red
Rose city will join the independent Atlantic
League.
Record setting 2012 season
3 The Barnstormers set a record for wins
by an Atlantic League team (going 88-52 in the
2012 season) and advance to the nals after
beating York in the semis. Unfortunately, Lan-
caster loses to Long Island in the fth and nal
game of the championship series in the bottom
of the ninth on a squeeze bunt with two outs.
Back to the playoffs
4 After not making the playoffs for four
straight seasons, the Barnstormers nish 69-56
and earn a playoff berth in 2011, Butch Hob-
sons rst season as manager.
Witters emotional return
5 On July 28, 2010, the Barnstormers Adam
Witter homers in his rst at-bat after coming
off the disabled list. There were more impor-
tant hits, more dramatic plays, but Witters
homer wasnt about baseball.
A month earlier, Witter had been diagnosed
with multiple sclerosis and he thought his
career was over. Most of the crowd at Clipper
Magazine Stadium did not realize what they
witnessed that day (Witter wouldnt allow his
story to become public until after the season).
But he brought his friends and family in at-
tendance to tears when he homered off New-
ark righty Ryan Glynn to lead off the bottom of
the third.
DiNardos no-hitter
6 Lancaster lefty Lenny DiNardo faces just
28 batters, walking two and striking out eight,
while pitching the rst-ever Barnstormers no-
hitter, a 9-0 victory over the Long Island Ducks
on May 9 of last season. During DiNardos
115-pitch performance, the Ducks hit just two
fair balls out of the ineld. Fifteen outs came
on ground balls.
Victory in the frst game
7 The Barnstormers win the rst game in
franchise history when they beat the host
Somerset Patriots, 6-2, in Bridgewater, N.J. on
April 28, 2005. Ryan Minor gets the Barnstorm-
ers rst-ever hit, RBI, run and homer with
one swing of the bat, when he hits a pitch by
Somerset starter Bret Jodie (now the Patriots
manager) over the left-eld wall in the second
inning.
Tiffee quiets York fans
8 In the fth and deciding game of the 2011
playoff seminals, the Barnstormers trail the
York Revolution 5-1 with two on and two outs in
the bottom of the 10th. Needing just one more
out for their team to advance to the nals, York
fans taunt Lancaster fans in the Barnstorm-
ers stadium. Terry Tiffee instantly quiets
them with a homer to right eld that brings the
Barnstormers within a run. Unfortunately for
the Stormers faithful, the joy is short-lived, as
York records the nal out, eliminating Lan-
caster.
Rosario hits for the cycle
9 On Aug. 7 of last season, Olmo Rosario
hits a triple in the bottom of the eighth during
a 13-1 rout of Long Island that completes the

f the more than 300 who have worn a
Lancaster Barnstormers uniform in the
nine seasons since they began play in 2005,
most have been forgettable. But some have stood
out. The best of those players, position-by-posi-
tion, are listed below.
With one exception, a player has to have totaled at
least a half-season of participa-
tion with the Barnstormers to be
eligible for selection.
Catcher
Lance Burkhart A
quiet, lead-by-example, play-the-
game-the-right-way type of guy,
Burkhart was a positive presence
in the Lancaster clubhouse for ve
years, including the 2006 championship season. He hit
.249 with 61 homers and 210 RBIs in 358 games with
the Barnstormers, but it was his steadying inuence
behind the plate that was most important. He was
adept at getting the most out of the pitching staff.
After he retired, he was a hitting/bench coach with the
Barnstormers from 2010 through last season. This is
his rst season as manager of the Southern Maryland
Blue Crabs.
Others considered: Emerson Frostad.
First Base
Tommy Everidge The native Californian,
who reached the majors with Oakland for 24 games
in 2009, played two years with the Barnstormers, in-
cluding the 2011 season, when he was named Atlantic
League Player of the Year. That season, he led the
league in homers (28), doubles (41), hits (160) total
bases (285) and extra-base hits (a league-record 69).
He totaled 94 in both runs and RBIs, each second in
the league, and his .319 batting average was sixth.
Second base
Gilberto Mejia A major-league quality
second baseman defensively, Mejia also hit .293 in
203 games for the Barnstormers, helping them to the
playoffs in 2011 and 2012.
Also considered: Travis Hake.
Shortstop
Jason Bowers Bowers was so good defen-
sively that he gets the top spot at shortstop despite not
reaching the half-season of participation requirement.

th
Bowers was an integral part of the
Barnstormers in their 2006 champion-
ship season, making the best defensive
play in Barnstormers history in the
second game of the best-of-ve cham-
pionship series with the Bridgeport
Bluesh.
With the game tied 8-8 in the bottom
of the ninth, the Bluesh got a leadoff
single. A sacrice bunt attempt was
popped over the pitchers head to a spot
just beyond and slightly to the second-
base side of the mound. With the cor-
ners charging and the second baseman
going to cover rst, it appeared that
the Bluesh would have two on with no
outs.
But Bowers, diverting from his path,
which was heading to cover second
base, raced in, picked up the ball bare-
handed and ended up parallel to the
ground as he threw to rst to just nip
the batter. Its the only time Ive ever
witnessed a 6-3 sacrice bunt.
The Barnstormers got out of the
ninth and went on to win in 13 innings.
Instead of the series being tied 1-1, the
Stormers had a commanding 2-0
lead and secured the title the next night
in Lancaster.
Bowers totaled just 42 regular-
season games for the Barnstormers
that season, hitting .277. He began the
season in Lancaster before being signed
by Baltimore and playing 58 games
at Triple-A Ottawa. He returned to
the Barnstormers near the end of the
season.
His glove work was so good (saving
the Stormers staff numerous pitches,
outs and runs) that manager Tom
Herr, moved starting shortstop Danny
Gonzalez to second base when Bowers
returned.
Gonzalez, who was no slouch with the
glove himself and was a switch hitter
with power, would have been the choice
at All-Time Stormers shortstop if not
for Bowers. But because the manager
chose Bowers over Gonzalez and since
he was so important to Lancaster win-
ning its only title,
the half-season
requirement was
waived.
Others con-
sidered : Danny
Gonzalez and
Bryant Nelson.
Third
Base
Aaron Herr
In 2010, the
middle year of
Herrs three
seasons with the
Barnstormers,
the Hempeld
product was
named Co-MVP
of the Atlantic League. He hit .320, tied
for the league lead with 23 homers, hit
35 doubles and had a franchise record
103 RBIs.
Others considered: Jose Ortiz and
Terry Tiffee.
Left Field
Blake Gailen The speedy out-
elder was named the Atlantic League
MVP and Baseball Americas Indepen-
dent Leagues Player of the Year after
the 2012 season when he hit a league-
leading .338. Listed at 5-9, his size is
deceiving because he added 22 home
runs and had 89 RBIs that year
Gailen also helped on defense, run-
ning down balls in the left-eld corner,
holding batters at rst or throwing them
out trying to stretch singles to doubles.
Last season, he batted .288 with 11
homers and 52 RBIs in 117 games for
the Barnstormers before signing with
Toronto and nishing the year with Buf-
falo, the Blue Jays Triple-A afliate.
Center Field
Reggie Taylor Perhaps the
most talented position player to ever
suit up for the Barnstormers, Taylor
had two stints with the Stormers, play-
ing with them in their 2006 title season
and returning in 2010. The South Caro-
lina native was drafted in the rst round
(14th overall) by the Phillies in 1995.
A ve-tool player, he was used at the
top of the order as well as the power
spots. He hit .305 with 46 homers and
146 RBIs in 217 total games with Lan-
caster.
Right Field
Ryan Harvey The 6-foot-5
Harvey played the last two seasons for
the Barnstormers, leaving fans, team-
mates and opponents with astonished
gaping-mouth looks following his mam-
mouth home runs.
Last season, he led the Atlantic
League in both home runs (29) and RBIs
(92). Despite missing signicant time
due to injuries, in his two years with the
Stormers, he batted .274, compiling 171
RBIs and 56 homers.
Defensively, he has a cannon for an
arm and is quick to the ball for a man of
his size.
Other outelders considered: Adam
Godwin, Michael Woods, Jason Perry,
Quincy Foster and Fehlandt Lentini.
Starting pitcher
Dwayne Pollok The Texas
A&M product was named the Atlantic
League Pitcher of the Year the last two
seasons, the only player ever to win
the honor in consecutive seasons. Last
year, he was 18-3, tying a league-record
for wins in a season. His 2.29 ERA was
second in the league and his franchise-
record 124 strikeouts were third.
After the 2012 season, when he was
14-4 (tying for the league lead in wins),
and led the league with a 2.30 ERA, he
became the rst Barnstormer ever to
be named Pitcher of the Year.
Other considered: Denny Harriger.
Closer
Jason Urquidez Deciding on
a closer was was perhaps the toughest
decision, as the Barnstormers have had
excellent closers throughout their nine
seasons, but Urquidezs numbers last
season were just too good to ignore.
Before leaving, after signing with the
Angels and reporting to their Triple-A
afliate in Salt Lake City, Urquidez was
almost perfect. He had a 0.25 ERA,
recorded 24 saves and allowed just
one earned run in 39 appearances that
totaled 36 innings.
In 2012, he was 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA
in six relief appearances for the Barn-
stormers.
Others considered: Scott Patterson,
Tim Hamulack and Derrick DePriest.
Designated hitter
Matt LeCroy Following a
dismal start because of injuries, LeCroy
battled back to hit .326 with 22 hom-
ers and 83 RBIs in 94 games with the
Barnstormers in an otherwise awful
2008 season.
Other considered: Ryan Minor.
Utility Player
Lloyd Turner The ultimate util-
ity player, Turner played every position
for the Barnstormers except pitcher,
catcher and rst base during his three
seasons (2008 through 2010) in Lancast-
er. His rst season with the Barnstorm-
ers was his best. He hit .300, drove in 56,
had 19 doubles, 13 homers and a then
league-record 13 triples.

take a while, Hobson said of Kieltys of-
fense.
Jim Negrych, a .296 career hitter in
eight minor league seasons, will start at
second.
Yusuke Kajimoto, who played seven
seasons in the Japanese majors, also will
see time at second.
Casey Frawley was the starter at
shortstop during the preseason.
I like Frawley a lot, Hobson said.
Hes a gamer. He plays hard and dives
for everything. Hes got quick feet and
hes got a little pop in his bat.
Another Township grad, Austin Gal-
lagher, will start at third. He did a good
job last year for Stan, Hobson said of
Gallaghers time with new Stormers hit-
ting coach Stan Cliburn.
Cliburn was the manager at Sioux City
in the American Association last year
when Gallagher played there.
The Stormers added inelder Lance
Zawadzki, who played 25 games with
San Diego in 2010, near the end of spring
training.
Blake Gailen, the 2012 Atlantic
League Player of the Year, and former
major leaguers Fred Lewis (.266 average
and 27 homers in 535 games in the bigs)
and Greg Golson will start in the outeld.
James Skelton, who played for Som-
erset last season, and Juan Apodaca will
handle the catching duties.
And Cole Garner, who reached the
majors with Colorado for four games in
2011, will likely DH.
Everybody came in in good shape,
Hobson said. Everybody seems happy.
Everybody has a good attitude. Its a good
clubhouse.
Of course, the team that the Barn-
stormers begin the season with is not the
team they will end the season with.
Players will be signed by afliated teams.
Players will get hurt. Players will retire.
The key will be how quickly those ros-
ter spots are lled and how good the re-
placements are.
And the rest of the league is also very
good according to Hobson. It gets better
every year, he said.
But if the Barnstormers add the big
bat Hobson is looking for and get the
stellar pitching they have during the pre-
season, they could get off to a good start.
They could win the rst half, get back
to the playoffs and, maybe, nally win
that championship that has eluded them
since 2006.
