PRESENT SFCCAAON PRESIDENT

Dear Alumnae,

I have served as the President of the St Francis Canossian College

Alumni Association Ontario (SFCCAAON) for the past two years.
Throughout this time, I have had the honour of representing the SFCC alumnae to
participate in a number of joint school functions.

The highlight of the many functions organized by SFCCAAON was the bi-centennial celebration of the establishment of
the Canossian Daughters of Charity in September, 2008.The celebration was jointly organized by the alumni association
of SHCC, SHCC (Macau), SMCC, and SFCC.The collaboration and team work of the four alumni associations brought
a successful event which included a celebratory mass by Rev. Bishop Pearce Lacey at the Chinese Martyrs Catholic Church
and dinner at the Golden Regency Restaurant. Greetings and congratulations were sent in by former and present school
principals and teachers and informational displays of our foundress, Magdalene of Canossa, and also of the Canossian
Foundation were set up. It was viewed and appreciated by many.

Our Alumni Association is one of the organizing schools of the Valentine Ball which is a joint function organized by the
Hong Kong catholic schools in Toronto. We also participate in bowling competitions, golf tournaments, picnic and day trips
organized by our sister schools. We have also undertook volunteer work for various charitable organizations.

All these activities could not have happened without the dedication, cooperation and effort of the committee members to
which I am truly thankful. We work towards a common goal of sharing our Franciscan spirit of Veritas in Charitate – Love
and Virtue.

This year marks the 140th anniversary of our Alma Mater. We are grateful for the education and guidance which we received
from our school – the school principals, nuns and teachers who have taught us with immense patience and dedication. Let’s
celebrate this occasion.

Last but not least, I would like to welcome our newly elected President, Ms. Irene Kwok and her new committee. I am confident
that the spirit of St. Francis will continue to thrive and that SFCCAAON will continue to flourish under her leadership.

PRESENT SFCC PRINCIPAL

Dear Franciscans,

As our school is about to celebrate the 140th

Anniversary of its foundation, we thank God for
SFCCAAON committee members visited Alma Mater in July 2009
the gift of St. Magdalene of Canossa, our foundress,
for her unshakable fidelity and trust in the divine providence. By faith, the Canossian sisters
came to Hong Kong and began to sow the seeds of hope and love among us as early as 1860.
We are grateful for Mother L. Cupis, the first superior of St. Francis’ Canossian Convent, who perceived the needs of the youth
of Wanchai and responded to these needs with the love of Jesus. Despite immense trials and hardships, the Canossian pioneers
laid a solid foundation for our school in 1869.

By God’s grace numerous generations of Franciscans have grown in the past 140 years. Guided by the infinite patience and
care of dedicated teachers, they have grown firmly in the spirit of our school – to live by the Truth in Love. In the face of life
challenges of the current era, thank God that many of our Franciscans still hold on to the Christian belief and values that they
have acquired in school. These qualities remained as traits that marked the uniqueness of the Franciscans.

May the Lord continue to bless and protect you wherever you may go and in whatever you may endeavour.

Live St. Francis’ live forever, in our mind and in our heart…

Greetings from Sister Marie Remedios

FORMER SUPERIOR GENERAL OF THE CANOSSIAN DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY, FORMER SFCC PRINCIPAL

To all my dear Alumnae and Canossian friends and benefactors,

A hundred and forty years from the day our beloved school of St. Francis
stood erect on its new foundations and opened its doors to children and
adolescents for the very first time! What a joyful occasion for us to be
here today to commemorate and to express our thanks to the Lord and to all those who have
gone before us and paved the way for all those thousands of young people who have followed
in the same footsteps for 140 years!
These past few decades have seen radical changes in the educational system of Hong Kong, with globalization overthrowing
many traditional patterns in our lives, and education playing a crucial role in shaping traditional values, lifestyles and
behavioral patterns. Changes have taken place so rapidly that they sometimes seem to go beyond our control. While many of
these changes are good and necessary to enhance a better quality of education and life, they can also serve to render us no
longer so sure which values are of utmost importance and are non-negotiable, and which values are less important, and can
be flexible, adjustable, negotiable, according to the changing situations, and where these qualities are placed in the overall
scale of values.

A hundred and forty years is a long time, and yet so short, when we think that the education of the heart and of the whole
person is a work of a life time! The famous Chinese saying reminds us that it takes a hundred years to educate a person; how
much more to create and to educate for a “culture of life” in a society and in the whole world! And yet, it is with humble pride
that we can testify that, even to this day, St. Francis Canossian College is still keeping the Lord Jesus, as Teacher and Model of
our lives as Canossian students, in a society which tends to give more importance to efficiency, achievements, social
advancement, success and material gain, than to the Christian values of love, compassion, humble service and goodness.

As the years pass, we must never stop forming our younger generations to the above virtues modeled by Jesus Christ, nor tire in
instilling these values into our daily life situations and choices, in order to be relevant and coherent witnesses within our
families and in our society. You then, dear Alumnae, become like what St. Paul said in this writings to the Corinthians: “our
letters of recommendation, our testimonials, to be known and read by all people…” (2 Cor.3:2-3). Indeed, the fruitful results
of the teaching of your former teachers and Sisters, can only be seen today, not published in any books or newspapers, but
indeed, in your present lives, in your behavior and the good qualities of Christian and moral values that can be seen in your
lives today. These will speak, will proclaim, very loudly to everyone, that St. Francis Canossian College is an excellent school
and that your teachers have done a great job through their example and teachings. So you have become “our testimonials,
written on your hearts... a letter not written with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God.”

4
SFCC_140_ProgramBkV.qxd:Layout 1 10/27/09 5:54 PM Page 5

If these 140 years give us anything to boast about, it is this fact alone. This is the credit you have given to us and to
yourselves. This is your true success in life, your greatness as women, mothers, wives, professionals; as women of honesty and
integrity, of compassion and kindness; as people who show concern for every person who suffers or is in need, without
discrimination of colour, class or creed; as women who are loving and forgiving, generous and humble; as alumnae of
St. Francis who show the characteristics of joy and simplicity in all that you do…

Just as every woman is called to empower others, to give life and hope to everyone who enters her life, to nurture and respect
life, to bring growth and beauty and goodness wherever she is present, so you, my dear girls, have brought into society a heart,
the compassionate heart of a woman; to be the leaven, the light and the salt of this earth. In this way, you are making a
difference in the world, and leaving an indelible impact wherever you go, and in whatever you do, today and in the future.

Once again, I am happy to tell you just how proud

I am of you, how proud your school is of you, to see
how you are still striving to implement some of
these values in their own lives today, in their
families, in their work, in society. It is a great joy
to see how you have matured in your faith and
convictions, and are passing these on to your
children, yes, even with much fatigue and sacrifice
at times. I thank you for being the best testimonials
that we have, and beg you to continue with courage
this difficult path of faithfulness, because it is the
only thing that is truly worthwhile and lasting,
the only thing worth commemorating after a
udent
long history of 140 years of existence.Though your formed our Past St

FORMER SFCC PRINCIPAL

Dear Alumnae,

Happy 140th Anniversary

It seems it was just yesterday that we celebrated our school’s
120th Anniversary and here we are celebrating its 140th Birthday!
I left St. Francis’ in 1990, took up principal-ship in two other Canossian secondary schools until my retirement two years
ago…Oh no, excuse me, a Canossian sister never retires. And so, here I am, joining you all in your happy celebration in
Toronto/inVerona.

Does Verona sound familiar to your ears? Yes, it is the birthplace and hometown of our Foundress, St. Magdalene of Canossa
where she also founded the Canossian Institute of Canossian Sisters and Fathers. I am now a residence in the Mother House in
Verona. How I wish that many of you coming to Italy next time will also pay me a visit in the Mother House. I shall take you
to the Room our Foundress used at her time which is now preserved for visitors from all around the world who want to be
connected with her.

I am privileged to become a member of an international team based in the Mother House whose mission is making research
studies on the spirit of our Foundress and providing training and spiritual support to member of this Religious Family which
today includes you and me, Canossian sisters, alumnae and co-workers.

I consider it a great privilege to have been summoned to Verona and I wish to make the next three to five years there as “times
for being”. I realize that I have been rather busy in the last forty years as a Canossian sister, that I may be more a person of
“doing” and haven’t really looked after my being. I shall cherish such times there to nourish life-giving relationships through
my service. It is for this reason that I invite many of you to pay me visits there, affirming one another in our identity as
daughters of the same heavenly Father and living the legacy of St. Magdalene through our main line of action, giving
yourselves a little rest period to enable you to find yourselves again. Thus refreshed and rejuvenated, you will treasure more the
gift of life. The following is my address and telephone inVerona:

Greetings from Ms. Julie Wong

FORMER SFCC TEACHER

I was twenty when I started teaching, green and

unprepared. Few knew how terrified I was when I walked
into the classroom with some students in the Form 6 and 7 classes
almost my age. I read books, researched the course materials, studied the
Hong Kong University matriculation exam questions, and drafted the JulieWong and F2A, in 1969
notes accordingly. I was well prepared for the matriculation classes –
my way to allay the fears of standing before a class of forty students. I read the notes verbatim loud and clear – something not
permissible in the Canadian classroom and most likely not tolerated even in Hong Kong these days.Teaching was easy then.
Students never complained, tolerated the tedium, diligently jotted down my “words of wisdom” in their notebooks.

Being homeroom teacher of Form 2 was a little different. I did not have to worry about preparing students to pass the public
exam. I had a bit more freedom to do what I wanted in class; and got to know the students. That didn’t mean I was a better
teacher. I taught Moonstone or some novel the title I cannot recall. It was a story set against the Malaysian backdrop; but did
not have a clue what Malaysia was like. I also taught the ancient civilizations of Tigris and Euphrates to Form 1 students; but
I knew than what the textbook told me, and nothing more. If the students were confused, I would not blame them. So was I.

Perhaps because the students didn’t know any better, perhaps they were attracted to my youth, or perhaps I was just kidding
myself, I think they accepted and liked me. It’s not that I wanted to strike fear in students, but they were, as the saying goes,
“not scared” of me as a teacher. They treated me more like a friend or a big sister, and always had a big smile for me.The two
blind students, Mary and Madeleine, always surprised me calling out loud my name,“Miss Wong!,” when they heard me coming
from afar, and gave me their shy but winning smiles when I got close. A few students were the younger sisters of friends at the
University. They slapped me on my back and grinned when they ran into me in the corridor. Very friendly, but not much the
way to greet a teacher!

Neither did I behave like one; I was the curious student too. I took a class
with a Form 2 student in Alliance Francaise. Her sister coached me so I could
be admitted into the same grade; she prompted me and whispered answers
when the French teacher asked me questions in class. Students labeled me “tall
Wong” to set me apart from the “pretty,” “thin,” and “short” Wongs who joined
the teaching staff that year. We, the young Wong’s, made the mistake of
letting three students took our table after we finished a meal in a restaurant.
Next day, rumors flew in school that the fourWongs were big eaters!

I stayed only two years in St. Francis.Teaching these students might have

St. Francis’ Canossian College – History

St. Francis’ Canossian College (嘉諾撒聖方濟各書院) (“SFCC”) was founded on May 8,1869, the second
school established by the Italian Canossian Daughters of Charity in Hong Kong. The elementary school is known
as St. Francis’ Canossian School (嘉諾撒聖方濟各學校) (“SFCS”) . Both of the school campuses are located at
9-13 Kennedy Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong. As a landmark on the Kennedy Road, the school building is sharply
distinguished by the mural of the four angels playing musical instruments.

Today, more than a hundred and forty years after the school was established, St. Francis’ Canossian College is
one of the most prestigious catholic girls’ secondary schools in Wanchai, Hong Kong. It is one of the 22 earliest
schools subsided by the Hong Kong government, and one of the 114 EMI (English as the medium of instruction)
secondary schools in Hong Kong. It is one of the best secondary schools on Hong Kong Island.

SFCCAAON Activities

St. Francis’ Canossian College Alumni Association (Ontario) (“SFCCAAON”) was founded in 1991 and is one of
the most established alumni associations outside Hong Kong. We continue our support for our school’s lunch
program and we present scholarships to children of our alumnae in Ontario.

Our alumni association participates in a number of joint school functions such as the Valentine Ball, bowling
competitions and golf tournaments, to name a few.

The highlight of 2008 was a joint Canossian school bi-centennial celebration of the Foundation of the Canossian
Daughters of Charity. The Canossian choir was formed since then.
