Dear Student
I write to you following the events on 12 November 2009 at the Davies Street building
when you participated in a demonstration and an occupation of the Rector’s offices.
When students fail to observe reasonable instructions from the University they are
contravening the University’s disciplinary process and possibly engaging in unlawful
acts. The University is then compelled to be mindful of its wider duty of care to other
students and staff and may invoke disciplinary proceedings.
The University, however, does not envisage instituting disciplinary proceedings for
yesterday’s acts nor does the University intend to impose court orders restricting
students from entering university buildings.
However, such behaviour would normally give rise to the consideration of, at the very
least, disciplinary proceedings. We recognise and indeed support the rights of
students to speak freely and make representations to the University, but any
breaches of the Disciplinary Code for Students, including a repeat of the events on
12 November could lead to disciplinary action and possible suspension and
expulsion from the University.
Yours sincerely
Stephen Marshall
University Secretary and Registrar
