Guided since our founding in 1912 by the missionary vision of the
Paulists committed to the mission of Jesus, and dedicated to be
welcoming to all, we, the community of St. Philip Neri, strive to reach
out, to reconcile and to promote unity for all Gods creation through
worship, education, and service toward the common good.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the
Street Fair Parade and Childrens Concert a huge
success. We had a good crowd for the concert and a
small but enthusiastic contingent in the parade. This
year we added face painters & karaoke along with the
balloons.
A special thank you to all the donors and sponsors who
helped to make this the biggest and best Street Fair
event: Dorothy Bruck, Kait Skylar, Joanne McMahan,
Nancy Salta, Judith Morgan, Jerry & Priscilla Stewart,
Cynthia Wong, Mary & Frank Kavanaugh, and Ed Ferraro.
We had two corporate sponsors: Keith Watson Life,
Health & Medicare, and Oregon Transfer. All the
numbers arent in yet, but we made a small profit to
help fund future events.

STEWARDSHIP FORMS
We have received only 83 pledge forms to date.
Please remember to turn in your pledge forms to the
office as soon as possible. Turning in your forms
now will eliminate the need for follow up by
letter or phone.
There are extra forms on the back counters of the
Church, or you can call the office for assistance.

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE?
Who is interested in becoming Catholic? OR maybe you
know someone who is talking about returning to the
Catholic faith. Invite them to Mass with you, or give
them our Parish office telephone number: 503.231.4955
and encourage them to call us for information. The
RCIA program will begin in September for those who are
interested. We are here to assist all with their journey
to Christ.

Hecker Quote for August 3
What a work the Catholic Christian sees and has before
him!....When I contemplate the holiness the beauty the
piety the sweetness of the Catholic faith my heart is
filled with ineffable joy.He cannot be a catholic who
sees not in society as it is his work to do.

Pastoral Corner

We live in a world of abundance where poverty, homelessness, and hunger abound. Hows that for a
paradox? We enjoy abundance where the sources of our plenty are in danger, air, water and food, housing and
human dignity. It is all enough to make us crawl into bed and hide under the covers and gorge ourselves on
Snicker bars. In the face of so much we feel, and are, powerless. Why bother?
We bother because we are people of Hope. St. Paul asks the fundamental question. Who will separate us
from the Love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord? In several places in his letters he lists a series of distress;
shipwrecks, earthquakes, stonings, beatings, persecution, and the sword. At the end of the list Paul concludes
that there is nothing that can separate us from the Love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Paul was, above all, a
person of Hope.
In the Jewish Kabbalah (Mystical) tradition there is a warning not to take on too much. The mystical
tradition teaches to live in the moment, to be present to the person or situation that is directly in front of
you. Wise advice! Obviously if everyone did this the world would be in a much better, healthier situation. We can
only plant the seeds of Justice and Peace from where we are, with the influence we have in our local
situation. New members of Alcoholics Anonymous are urged to clean up their side of the street first; someone else
needs to take care of the other side of the street. To work for Peace and Justice we must first be people of Peace
and Justice.
This is precisely what Jesus is saying in this weekends Gospel. He and the disciples are face to face with a
hungry crowd, well over five thousand people. The disciples want to send them away to go and find food for
themselves; but Jesus says, no, give them something to eat yourselves. What? Not to simply explain the miracle
away but all these people walked out to a deserted place. They probably did bring along something as we would if
we were going to spend a day at the beach or in the mountains. So, Jesus may just be saying, Share.
The hungry of our world could probably be fed on the food that we throw away. Just think about the food
that is thrown out by supermarkets and restaurants. The bread that comes to our table cannot be used again for
other customers, it is just tossed out. When I get annoyed at the little butter pats that I have to unfold I try to
remember that if the butter can out unwrapped, what wasnt used would have to be thrown away. We are, in so
many ways, a waste factory; it is our number one export. Just because no one else seems to be recycling is no
excuse for us not to recycle.
Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now. the song proclaims. It all begins with me, grows
and spreads from us to others. This is at the heart of the Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, and all other mystical
traditions.

Fr. Michael Evernden, CSP

PANTRY ITEMS
Items needed for the pantry: Soups, peanut butter, rice, noodles, canned meats, vegetables, fruits, Cup o
Noodles, & any non-perishable food items as well as toiletry items: toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, brushes,
deodorant, shampoo, soaps. Bring your donations and drop them in the cans in the church foyer.

HOMEBOUND MEMBERS
Do you know someone who can no longer attend Mass? Maybe a neighbor or someone you havent seen in
awhile? We send bulletins out weekly to those who are unable to attend Mass. We would also like to add them to
our homebound ministry list. Call the office or talk to Barbara or Rose.

LOOKING FOR A RELIGIOUS ITEM?
Check out the small store in the foyer of the church for rosaries, statues, books, and many other items. We sell
these with very little mark up to keep them at a reasonable price. Dont see what you are looking for? We can do
special orders. Ask Barbara, Rose, or the priests to check out or purchase items

IN THE SENTINEL
In the new Sentinel, read about a Catholic policeman who gave money from his pocket to help a family. See why
the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon are disappointed with the post office and learn about a ministry in which
parishioners crochet and knit shawls as a tangible sign of care for those who are sick or grieving. See what anti-
poverty projects the church has funded and hear what Archbishop Sample has to say about reorganization at the
Pastoral Center.
