OFFICE VOLUNTEERS
There is much to be done in the offices and in the priests residence as we
prepare for the Paulists leaving in June. We are looking for volunteers to help
in the front office: cover phones, the window, etc. in the coming weeks. If you
have some time you can spend in the office, please call Rose or Jeanne to let
us know when you can come in. No experience needed well show you all you
need to know! Thanks to those who have volunteered.
Pastoral Corner
Our faith invites us to know without knowing. Say what? We like knowing facts. We like to say we know so
and so; it makes us look smart or popular. We like being able to name things; it gives us a sense of being in control.
Dare I suggest this is all an illusion? Dare I say that we live in a mystery far grander than we can possibly name or
know? This is the core of the wonder of it all.
Those of us brought up in the faith via the Baltimore Catechism were led to a point far short of wonder and
awe. The very nature of question and answer learning led us to believe than once we had memorized all the answers
and finished the last volume of the catechism series all was done. We knew it all done deal.
The definition of the word catechism means a summary of belief, not at all complete - it is only a summary,
only a beginning. Who made me? God made me. Why did God make me? To know, love and serve Him.
Imagine reading a summary, a catechism for riding a bike. We finish reading it, memorizing all the principles, we can
pass the test perfectly and never know the delight of riding a real bike.
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity. The Baltimore Catechism says that God is One God
in three divine persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Is this sufficient? Dare I say, nope? At best we may know a
fact about God but know nothing about God. God doesnt want us to know about God but wants us to know God. We
are invited into a living relationship with God and this is a completely different way of knowing. It is knowing beyond
knowing.
Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J., a convert. Jesuit priest and a leading example of Victorian poetry said: all of
creation is charged with the grander of God. Wow! You wont find a line like this in any catechism. This one line of
poetry takes us light years beyond the experience of questions and answers. It opens us up to wonder and awe. Do
you want to know God and not just something about God? Go out on a dark starry night, lay down in an open field
and just look up sink into and luxuriate in the presence of God; without thought, without judgment just be and
know beyond knowing the intimate relationship we have with the Divine One. No words can capture this kind of
knowing we just know it because we are in it, one with the Divine One.
Just as we might rest in an open field on a starry night, so too we gather here in church to be engulfed with
signs and symbols of our faith. We gather not to do something but to become someone, the very Body of Christ in the
world. In Gods Word, in the Eucharist we are One in the Lord. Let your imagination go wild, stretch yourself out to
the four corners of this church, stretch backward to our origins and forward to our destination, we are One in a unity
and knowing that no one can take from us.
Fr. Michael
BINGO
A WORD FROM SERVANT OF GOD, ISAAC
HECKER, PAULIST FATHERS FOUNDER
It cannot be too strongly be insisted upon that the
possession of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit should be the
aim of all Christians. For we are exhorted by the Apostle
Paul to Be zealous for spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 14:1). Not
only so, but it is the Christians privilege to enjoy the
Beatitudes and Fruits of the Holy Spirit. [On the Mission
of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another
person who is ill, and you believe something miraculous has
happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP at 202-2692519 and tell him your story.
