Winter hits hard at YBC
T
he past winter saw strong winds, heavy rains and lots
of snow at YBC, creating beauty at times but havoc
at others. The heavy rains delayed or stunted progress on
planned mainte-
nance projects and
on wood cutting.
Several trees
went down, includ-
ing one on the
baseball field which
damaged the
fence, and one in
the back 40
which blocked
Outpost access.
Freezing tem-
peratures caused
pipes to burst
resulting in flooded
areas, mostly
around McNeely
Dining Hall, and
one pump house
needed to be
re-plumbed due to
a burst pipe.
A storm-downed tree branch damages the
fence at the Baseball Field.
Snow blankets the Church Bowl.
Memorial Day BBQ:
everybodyll be there!
O
nce again our famous mouth-watering deep-pit
barbecue will draw fans to Gods Mountain on
Memorial Day Weekend, May 28-31. Everyone is invited
to come early and help with the work at YBC, and also
enjoy fellowship, hiking, and nearby attractions.
On Sunday well worship together, then there will be
a camper reunion potluck on Sunday at 1 pm.
On Monday at 10 am, Dennis Cree will speak at the
devotional. Dennis is the minister for the Whitmore
church of Christ in Modesto, and is a member and past
Chairman of the Agape Villages Board.
At noon well enjoy a feast of siz-
zling BBQ beef and trimmings,
topped off with delicious pie baked
and served by Friends of YBC. Buy a
slice or bid on a whole pie at the
famous Pie Auction! Dont forget to
pick up a few items at the Friends of
YBC Craft Boutique. All BBQ/pie/
crafts donations are welcomed to
benefit YBC!
Room and RV site reservations are on a first-come,
first-served basis, so call today! Donna Boyd will be in
charge of kitchen sign-ups for everyone who needs access
to the kitchen. For Reservations, call the Camp Office at

Volunteers lend a hand
A
bout 30 volunteers, representing several congrega-
tions, came up March 6 to help at what is becoming
an annual March Work Day. Projects included:
renovation of Girls Cabin 3,
repairing a pump house,
cutting and clearing fallen trees,
picking up debris near the baseball field,
installing safety railing on Seagraves Hall patio, and
building a fence around ditch behind Basketball Court.
We appreciate each and every worker who came out to
lend a hand at YBC and as always, if youd like to lead a
project from our To-Do List, please give us a call!

F
riends of Yosemite Bible Camp hope youll join us
and attend the meetings held at the Woodward Park
church of Christ building. We only meet 3 times a year
and once at Yosemite Bible Camp during the Memorial
Day BBQ. The cost to join is $12 for the year, and all
money comes back to Camp for much-needed projects.
We plan to help this year with repairs on the swim-
ming pool and pool house. Wed like to help with several
other projects, but we need you to make it all happen!
We should encourage the children in our home con-
gregations to attend camp this summer. Youll find the
camp schedule on the back of this Yodel Yodel Yodel Yodel.
Lake Tahoe Family Encampment will be held from
July 24-30. This is a jam-packed week of lessons, singing,
prayer and fellowship with Christians from all over the
country, with great teachers and classes for all ages.
Highland church of Christ in Bakersfield will host the
annual YBC Ladies Retreat on September10-12. Their
theme is Shine Like Stars. Make plans now to attend
this wonderful weekend.
Its also not too early to start thinking about our
luncheon and boutique at HomeTown Buffet in Clovis on
December 4. This is our largest money-making event of
the year. We hope youll bring lots of homemade items
and baked goods to sell.
Please keep Yosemite Bible Camp in your daily
prayers. May God bless you.

Were collecting memories!
H
ave you heard? Friends of YBC are collecting memo-
ries of YBC in hopes of publishing a volume of these
stories. Some of you old-timers have some great tales
to tell which wont be known unless YOU share them!
Younger camp alumni have stories to share as well:
meaningful lessons heard and learned, baptisms, friend-
ships begun, marriages which were sparked here
Please consider sharing a story or two for future inclu-
sion in the Friends memory book. Stories dont have to
be long. Snail-mail them to the Camp, ATTENTION:
YODEL, or to email them, call Angi at 559.683.7006
to get the email address. To prime your mental pump,
following is an example that already has been submitted.
Thank you, JoAnn, for taking time to share your memo-
ries with us!

hearing the surprising news that property had been
purchased in Oakhurst for a Bible Camp. Palm
Avenue members made their way to the site one
Sunday after worship in late spring/early summer of
1958 to have a potluck and see the property. Our
children were 4 and 18 months. They both at-
tended camp from the age of nine through early
adult years when they returned as staff members.
My Dad, Norman (Ben) Burton, along with
countless others, tore down the old hotel in
Coarsegold that had been donated and moved the
lumber and carefully-removed nails to the camp
property and constructed what is now the Craft
Building, otherwise known as Seagraves Hall. It is
my understanding that the concept for the camp
was born in the Seagraves living room in Madera.
Dad had just retired and made many trips up the
hill to help get the camp started. My mother teased
him, telling him they had no children to attend, and
he said, "But we have grandchildren who will some-
day attend." Little did he know that two of those
grandchildren would find their mates at YBC, but
he lived to see it happen. Grandson and grandson-
in-law have both served as elders in the Lord's
Church. ~JoAnn Glock

L
ucille Lawton went to be with Jesus on February 23.
Lucille was devoted to Yosemite Bible Camp, one of
her favorite places. She
served for nearly 40
years as a counselor,
teacher, and speaker at
YBC Bible camps and
womens retreats and
never shirked any task,
from kitchen help to
bulletin preparation.
She was a faithful mem-
ber of Friends of YBC.
Many times she
and her rancher
husband, Ted, donated beef and other food to Hanfords
camp. They also provided scholarships for children to
attend. Hanfords 1980 Camp Book was dedicated to them.
Lucille loved to sing and to tell the story of Jesus. She
encouraged women whose husbands were not yet Christians,
and often shared the story of Teds conversion after years of
prayers. She had the gift of hospitality and a great sense of
humor, and was meticulous in everything she did, exemplify-
ing the adage, If its worth doing, its worth doing right!
During her battle with cancer, which took her physical life
but not her soul and spirit, Lucille shared this advice: Know
Christ, share Christ, prepare for death, and live to glorify
God. Thank you, Lucille, for showing us what it looks like
to be a faithful servant of Jesus Christ. ~Pat Coppinger

YBCwe call it home
W
hat a blessing it is to live on Gods Mountain! There
is so much wildlife on this property that we are still
discovering new critters. If youve ever had a chance during
camp to just sit and enjoy the beauty of YBC, you may have
seen gray squirrels, mule deer, bats, frogs, lizards and even
an acorn woodpecker. But when camp season is over and
YBC grows calm and quiet, it is not unusual for us to see
newborn baby deer, raccoons, bears, coyotes, rabbits, quail,
wild turkeys, hummingbirds, scrub jays, and giant moths.
Some species are more shy or nocturnal but they leave
their mark at camp, and we have become quite knowledge-
able at reading animal tracks
and identifying species. You
may be surprised to know that
YBC is also host to skunks,
wood rats, gray foxes, a red-
tailed hawk, bobcats, crayfish,
scorpions, ladybug colonies,
the occasional wandering
mountain lion, and owls, to
name a few.
So next time youre here,
take a moment to listen to and see all the varieties of wild-
life that have made YBC home. We consider it an honor
and privilege to share this beautiful place with Gods
creatures. Everyone calls it camp, but we call it home.
