EDWARD T. JONES, JR., WEST PAWLET, VERMONT
WWII SOLDIER KILLED IN GERMANY The researcher
will be in East Poultney September 21st All are Welcome.
Information is sought by John L. (Jack) Wilson, Harvard, Massa-
chusetts researcher, about the life and growing years in the Ver-
mont / New York Slate Valley region of a late World War II sol-
dier, Sgt. Edward T. Jones, Jr. The late Sgt. Jones was a native
from Spruce Gum, West Pawlet, Vermont. He was a member of
A Company, 112 th Infantry Regiment, 28 th Infantry Division.
Sgt. Jones was killed in Germany in November 1944 along with
several other members of A Company. They were killed by a
German tank that fired point-blank on their position in the town of
Kommerscheidt.
A German explosive ordnance disposal team working in 2008
at a construction site in that German town found fragments of a
World War II-era U.S. military boot. The remains were identified
as being Sgt. Jones. In September 2010, Sgt. Jones remains
were buried with full military honors in Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Cemetery in Granville, New York.
The Gathering will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September
21st in East Poultney, Vermont in the fellowship hall of United
Baptist Church, On the Green, East Poultney, Vermont . The
gathering is open to the public . For more information contacts

SILENT FILMS AT THE COURTHOUSE- On Thursdays in
September, the Salem Courthouse Community Center is introduc-
ing a free silent film series. Join us at 7:30 pm on September 18,
and 25 at the Courthouse to view three great performances: Charlie
Chaplin in The Gold Rush(9/11), Buster Keaton in The General(9/
18), and Harold Lloyd in Safety Last(9/25). These three actors/
directors, distinctive in their characters and approach to humor, rank
as the most influential comedians of the Silent Film Era. Known as
a perfectionist, Charlie Chaplin developed a strong following once
he adopted the persona of a sympathetic Little Tramp in his famous
bowler hat. Buster Keaton, while creating brilliant parodies of fel-
low performers, acquired a nickname, The Great Stone Face, for
his ever present deadpan expressions. Called the Glasses char-
acter, Harold Lloyd often performed daredevil stunts and extended
chase scenes in his films. When you arrive at the Courthouse, pick
up your bag of popcorn, find a seat, and relax as Al Cormier pro-
vides fascinating details about the Silent Film Era and its stars. You
can then settle back to enjoy and laugh aloud viewing classic films
with a wonderfully attentive audience.

US HOUSE DECLARES THEIR DESIRE TO STOP WOTUS
US House Declares Their Desire to Ditch the Rule and Stop WOTUS (Waters Of The United
States) on Bipartisan Vote With 35 Democrats joining the Republican members of the House. That
body passed the Waters of the United States Regulatory Overreach Protection Act of 2014
Tuesday afternoon. Passage is an attempt to halt the Environmental Protection Agency and the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed Waters of the U.S. rule. Senate action is unlikely however
before the end of the year, or at all- and the White House has threatened veto if it should ever arrive
on the desk of the President. Still, passage was applauded by groups such as the National
Cattlemens Beef Association and the
National Pork Producers Council. NCBAs
Ashley McDonald said the interpretive rule
actually narrows the scope of what is
considered normal farming and ranching
practices. National Pork Producers Council
President Howard Hill stated NPPC wants
EPA to rescind its agricultural exemptions
rule immediately and to either withdraw the
WOTUS rule or work with agriculture to
make changes in the proposal that reflect
real on-farm conditions. House Ag
Chair Frank Lucas said he was pleased that the House approved this bipartisan, commonsense bill
to block the EPA from expanding its control of our nations land and water resources.
The nation's largest general farm group's President, Bob Stallman, issued a statement on behalf
of the American Farm Bureau- The House of Representatives stood with farmers and ranchers
and against the regulatory overreach of the EPA. Passage of H.R. 5078 isnt just a clear rejection
of the overreach that lies in the EPAs proposed Waters of the U.S. rule. Todays action is an
unmistakable signal that the tide is turning against those who ignore the constitutional separation of
powers in the United States. We will ditch this rule.
Under current regulation, states have primary responsibility for regulating waters within their
boundaries and twice the Unites States Supreme Court has reaffirmed this authority. The proposed
rule strips this balance and expands federal jurisdiction to nearly every water in the country, including
ditches, puddles and ponds. This measure prevents EPA and Corps from finalizing, implementing,
adopting or enforcing the proposed rule and had the bipartisan support of 120 co-sponsors leading
up to passage.

NEW ART WORK AT THE COURTHOUSE- Salem Art
Works has grown remarkably over the past ten years under the
direction of its founder, Anthony Cafritz. SAW believes that art is
not an option, but rather a necessity. It has worked diligently to
foster partnerships with artists, supporters, other local organizations
and the people of Salem. Anthony reached out to the Salem
Courthouse Community Center several years ago offering the loan
of larger scale sculpture to enhance the CCCs park-like side lawn.
Anthony believes that a single creation has the power to change
the world. Guests attending the annual Al Fresco Dinner always
marvel at the creative works enhancing the Courthouse grounds.
2014 is no exception. In May, CCC Director, Donna Farringer,
met with SAWs Artist Programs Coordinator and Curator, Jenny
Hillenbrand, to select three amazing works of art. On July 23,
under the supervision and watchful eye of SAWs Design and
Communications Associate, Julia Johnson, the sculpture on display
this past year was removed, and the new pieces were installed.
The works on display for the coming year are: Lilly Reeves
Montgomerys Dream Catcher Number 3, Joe Graessers Untitled
and Christopher Keatings Deconstruction of a Mind.

Some Mind Teasers:
1. A murderer is condemned to
death. He has to choose between
three rooms. The first is full of
raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded
guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't eaten in 3
years. Which room is safest for him?
2. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him
under water for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him.
But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a
wonderful dinner together. How can this be?
3. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and
gray when you throw it away?
4. Can you name three consecutive days without using
the words Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday?
5. This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious as to just how
quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It
looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing
was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is
highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you
still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit,
you might find out. Try to do so without any coaching.

VETERANS HALL OPEN HOUSE at the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds Sunday, October 5 11:00am-
3:00pm. Veterans Hall is a Salute to Veterans Past and Present. Many fairgoers have visited Veterans
Hall or have come to an Open House to pay tribute to our veterans and say thank you. Everyone
knows and loves a veteran and many come to share that connection. Some come to see a picture, a
clipping or perhaps an item donated by family or a friend that served our country. Veterans Hall
honors all veterans. In addition we are compiling a list of veterans names from Rensselaer County.
New this year will be the inclusion of names from Saratoga and Washington Counties. This will be an
ongoing objective for years to come. Getting your veterans name on the list is free. This event if free
