Fall 2014

Winter Came Early, Pastel 9 x 19
Last week winter indeed came early with a freak snowstorm but
now we are enjoying a glorious Indian summer warming our
bones before the snow flies again! Painters love autumn. Where
summer can be a little boring for the artsy crowd with all its
greenness, fall stirs up the creative juices with its variety of warm
colours and high contrasts. Summer is often a time where we like
to take it easy and just enjoy the warm weather but fall beckons
with renewed energy for all kinds of projects and activities. We
had a wonderful summer this year in this part of the world but now
it is time to return to work! As our dearly missed friend Robert
Genn said:
The principal currency of art is work

I can still hear his call to go to our room. He was right, of course,
there is no other way to get better at what we do than practise.
Feeling a little rusty? I loved Alyson Stanfields latest post
(www.artbizcoach.com) where she states: The reason you are
out of ideas is because you are out of practice. She continues by
reminding us that Newtons First Law of Motion says:
An object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in
motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless
acted upon by an external force
Isnt that the truth? One can get easily bogged down by numerous
distractions. However, fall is an inspirational season and we dont
have to look much further than the great outdoors inside or
outside the city to get into a creative mood:

or to markets with their abundant offerings of fruits and
vegetables

A drive out to Millarville to their legendary fall market offers plenty
of ideas for future artwork. Market scenes with people can be
great and I have tried my hand at a few but zeroing in on a
subject matter can be just as interesting and make for great
compositions:

The possibilities are endless. Let fall also be a time where you
check out the art exhibitions in either your neighbourhood put on
by local artists or gallery shows around town. There is nothing
better than studying other artists and seeing what they are up to.
At the end of this month, the Glenbow Museum is having an
exhibition entitled Vanishing Ice Alpine & Polar Landscapes in
Art as well as the fifth and final instalment of Glenbows survey of
regional art Made in Calgary, the 2000s with a Launch Party
September 27 for both shows sounds like a nice evening out!

I am pleased to announce a launch of my own: Workshop in a
Bag is a product that will appeal to beginner watercolour artists
who want to work at their own pace. The bag contains all the
materials and instruction. Lesson No. 1 is a landscape but there
will be more in this series to come in the near future. If you or
anybody you know would like to try out this medium, let me know.
Within the next week or so this item can also be purchased on my
personal website www.karinrichter.com or on a new website
www.workshopinabag.com created for this purpose alone.

With the gift giving season upon us, you might also be interested
in my other products like Artist Journals, 2015 Day Planners and
