Reorganization a historic occasion

Townships youngest mayor, first Hispanic councilman sworn in at meeting
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The council chambers of the
new Moorestown Town Hall was
packed with residents, reporters
and friends on Tuesday, Jan. 6
during the Moorestown Township Council reorganization
meeting. Every seat was filled,
and many people were standing
on the sides of the room to see
history being made.
On that night, Councilwoman
Victoria Napolitano, at the age of
26,
became
the
youngest
Moorestown mayor, and perhaps
the youngest female New Jersey
mayor ever, while newly-elected
Councilman Manuel Delgado became the councils first member
of Hispanic descent.
Local historians, libraries and
organizations, including the New
Jersey League of Municipalities
and the New Jersey Conference
of Mayors, were unable to confirm whether Napolitano made
history as the youngest female
New Jersey mayor.
I am very proud. And if I can
serve as a role model for other
young women who want to step
into the political arena and stand
up for what they believe in, then
I would be very proud to be that

Growing up, Victoria Napolitano always had an interest in

politics, however she couldnt see
herself running for office. But
today is a different story, as
Napolitano
was recently
appointed as
Moorestowns
mayor at the
age of 26, the
youngest person ever elected
as
the
towns mayor.
Ive always
been aware of
what
was

going on and
had political opinions, but I never
saw myself running for office,
Napolitano said.
Growing up in Union County,
Napolitano was involved in the
performing arts, doing plays and
musicals at her high school.

Municipal Court Judge Lois F. Downey, swears in Manuel Delgado with his family at his side as the
newest town council member at the Moorestown Township Council reorganization meeting on Jan. 6.
Delgado is Moorestowns first councilmember of Hispanic decent. Also on that night, Victoria Napolitano was chosen as mayor, Moorestowns youngest mayor, Phil Garwood was chosen as deputy mayor
and Stacey Jordan was reappointed to council. She was the running mate of Delgado.
because we dont have enough
women in office, Napolitano
said.

Obviously, I am very proud.

It takes a village to raise a child rings true now more than ever
Dan McDonough Jr.

he nearby town of Burlington

Township was shaken to its
core last week when news was
released of two high school students
who hung themselves days apart.
Two friends, a 15-year-old freshman
and an 18-year-old senior who both attended Burlington Township High
School, were found hanged inside their
homes only four days apart. Two days
before the senior was found, he spoke
at his friends celebration of life.
News such as this is bone chilling.
We feel deeply for the families, friends,
fellow students, teachers, administrators and members of the community
who have more questions than answers right now. Even though this did
not happen in our town, it is news that
hits hard at our homes.

suicide prevention can be found at

Life is fragile, that we all know, but

thats never more clear than at times
like these, when the lives of kids are
lost, taken way too early for reasons we
wont understand.
At times like these, we are reminded
of the saying, it takes a village to
raise a child. A childs life is molded
not just by his or her parents, siblings
and extended families, but also their
friends, school community, police officers, mayors, crossing guards and

other members of the community. And

it is the job of these other members of
the community of us to remind our
kids just how great life is.
Life cannot be taken for granted.
Life is precious. Life is worth living.
According to the National Association of School Psychologists, suicide is
the third leading cause of death among
youth between 10 and 19. But it is preventable. If you or someone you know
is in need of help, there are resources
available. Check out NASP on the web
at www.nasponline.com. The National
Suicide Prevention Lifeline is (800) 2738255.
Give your kids, your siblings, your
nieces and nephews and your other
loved youths a hug tonight. We know
we will.

New year brings new faces to Moorestown BOE

Peter Palko, Ann Marie Reyher and Caryn Shaw sworn in at meeting on Jan. 7
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The Moorestown Board of Education reorganization meeting on Jan. 7 welcomed
some new faces to the board. The night also
saw the board make a decision on who
would be the new president and vice president.
Former vice president Kathy Goldenberg was appointed president and David
Weinstein was appointed vice president.
The board welcomed new members Peter
Palko, Ann Marie Reyher and Caryn Shaw,
who were elected in November.
Taking over for Don Mishler, who was
board president and had been on the board
for around 25 years, is Goldenberg, who
has been on the board since 2007 and
served as vice president since 2011.

Goldenberg, a resident of Moorestown

since 1992, has had her two children attend
Moorestown Township Public Schools
from kindergarten through graduation.
She has been a part of the Home and
School Association, Transportation and
Safety Committee, Technology Committee,
Curriculum Committee, Budget and Finance Committee and others.
Now as president, Goldenberg feels honored to take the role and, being passionate
about education, expects to continue the
legacy of Moorestown in a positive way.
Im very honored. Im passionate about
our public education within the state. Im
very active in Trenton with our Garden
State Coalition of schools, to make sure
suburban districts like ours are able to provide students with the very best education,
and Im very excited to be a part of this and

to continue to be. Ive been volunteering

with the Moorestown township public
schools for 20 years. Its a passion of mine,
Goldenberg said.
For the future, Goldenberg wants her
focus to be on getting better and providing
more opportunities for every child.
Weinstein was first elected to the board
in 2009. Honored for being named vice president, he too hopes to continue
Moorestowns legacy and only improve on
it.
I am honored to be the vice president of
the Moorestown Board of Education and I
want to continue to provide the high level
of education that Moorestown has been
recognized for many years, and want to
find ways to make education in

Moorestown better now and for
our future, said Weinstein.
New members of the board
were honored to be elected by residents in November and are excited to help where they can.
I feel honored. My wife and I
have been involved very much
with the school system, so it is an
honor to represent everyone. And
I feel confident in my abilities,
Palko said.
Im very excited to serve the
community, Shaw said.
Palkos main focus is to help
maintain the levels of the
schools. Being an engineer and
contractor, Palko can bring a lot
of practical experience to the
table, especially with the construction that will be going on in
the near future.
I think it is mostly fiscal responsibility and at the same time
providing the highest degree of
service possible, Palko said.
Shaw, a mother of three children in three different schools in
the district, is part of the Revenue and Generation Committee
and serves as the first vice president of the Home and School Association.
Im very involved in revenue
generation, so I think that is one
of the benefits I can bring. Also
bringing parents views to the
board is really important. I have a

pulse on parents who are very involved and can see how things
strategically can link and how
they can be implemented in
schools, so I think bringing that
perspective is really important.

Napolitano enjoys cooking, reading, performing arts

Christie, the Napolitanos decided
to settle in Burlington County, ultimately Moorestown.
Moorestown was the obvious
choice. They have a great community. Its a place we could see ourselves settling down and one day
raising a family, Napolitano
said.
The Napolitanos first lived in
the
Lenola
District
at
Moorestown Woods before moving to a west Moorestown home
where they reside today.
Napolitano got involved with
the Republican County Committee, but it wasnt until she started
to speak up about artificial turf
that she considered running for

versity, she was a scholarship
member of the college choir and
a member of Naturally Sharp, a
select group of 16 singers chosen
by audition.
After graduating from Drexel
with a combined bachelors and
masters program in education,
Napolitano moved to Moorestown
with her husband Vinny. Getting

through her husbands job, as director of constituencies for Gov.

office. She didnt believe in using

open space money to build athletic fields with artificial turf. It was
a split decision within both parties, but ultimately the township
opted to use other funding methods. Her involvement and opinions made people notice her and
ask her to run for a council seat.
Many people appreciated my
point of view and my opinions, so
they encouraged me to consider
running, Napolitano said.
Thus led her to running in 2012
when she was elected to her position as council member. During
her time on the council, Napolitano has made the Lenola district
a major focus. As mayor, she has
committed to working on Lenola
and building it up this year.
It was my first home. I noticed
it wasnt getting the kind of attention Main Street was getting. It
needed and deserved a little more
help, Napolitano said.
When Napolitano isnt spending her time with various com-

mittees in town, she is either at

work or home. During the weekdays, Napolitano is a designer of
e-learning modules for an international data and information
firm in Philadelphia. Not being a
fan of coffee or in need of caffeine, she likes to have tea while
at work.
Im not a wake up and have
caffeine kind of person, Napolitano said.
After work and committee or
council meetings, Napolitano
likes to come home and cook dinner for herself and her husband.
And, after that, she likes to relax
and watch television with her
husband and adopted dog Delilah.
Some of her favorite shows include House of Cards, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones
and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Napolitano also likes to read
when she can. Liking a combination of non-fiction and fiction,
she recently finished Jim Gaffigans book about his life and is

Although she doesnt have a lot
of free time, some of her hobbies
include getting back into the performing arts, cooking and dining
out, and recently taking up photography. Napolitano got back
into theater, performing in the
last two MoorArts summer productions, because she really loves
it. She said her favorite part is
getting to know the cast and her
interactions with them. She also
thinks it is fun to enter into that
world for a little while and help to
create that world.
Napolitano said she likes
everything about food and doesnt
have a particular favorite. In regard to the camera, it is something she just recently picked up
and is testing out on the weekends when it is a nice day or when
she isnt seeing friends or going
out to eat.
Im kind of messing around
with it. I dont know where it is
going to go, but for now it is fun,
she said.
Im busy, but I like it that way,
she said.

Spellman said. Actually, I am not

surprised she is mayor. She is extremely bright, hard working,
makes good decisions and is a
great problem solver. In some
ways, it is a little surreal since
she is only 26, but I think she is
going to do an excellent job for the
town of Moorestown.
Also on that night Phil Garwood was selected as deputy
mayor and Stacey Jordan was
reappointed to the council joining
lone Democrat Greg Newcomer.
All council members voted yes
for Napolitano to be mayor and
Garwood to be deputy mayor, except Newcomer who abstained to
both.
After Jordan and Delgado were

sworn in by Municipal Court

Judge Lois F. Downey, Napolitano
was elected as mayor, officially
sworn into the position and made
a speech.
Napolitano thanked her colleagues for giving her this opportunity as well as their faith in her
to work on the challenges ahead.
She said she looked forward to
tackling them as they come. She
also thanked family, friends and
supporters who came out to that
nights meeting.
She especially made sure to
thank the women in the town and
county who were elected to various boards. She felt they helped to
guide her and light her way to
where she is now.
I am so proud to be continuing
in the tradition of conservative
women stepping up to lead in
Burlington County, and I must
thank my family for their endless

support, Napolitano said.

After praising Moorestown, its
schools and community, as well as
standing behind first responders
and members in law enforcement,
Napolitano spoke on what she
hopes to accomplish as mayor.
Her focus will be on tax relief,
saying it will be the No. 1 priority
for the council. She also vowed to
help improve the Lenola town
center and district, fulfilling the
promise she made when she and
Garwood ran for office in 2012.
Because it is first in your
minds, tax relief will be the No. 1
priority for this council. I am
pledging now that council will not
support a budget this year that
raises taxes on the hard-working
people of Moorestown, Napolitano said. We are moving
Moorestown forward. Lets work
together. We want to work with
you.
After thanking members of the
council and congratulating the
newest appointments, Garwood
reinforced Napolitanos words
about tax relief.
Newcomer offered his congratulations to members of the council and made sure to point out
that the duties of the mayor needed to change from saying he to
she.
I think we will have a lot of
fun this year. I am looking forward to moving forward, Newcomer said.
I cant tell you how excited I
am to start the year off with all of
you. I am looking forward to the
next year and working hard at
continuing to make Moorestown
a great town to live in. Thank you
all for coming, Delgado said.
Also that night, 49 residents
were appointed to various committees. Members of the council
thanked all the residents who
were appointed to the committees
and said they look forward to
working with them.
