ANG bilis malagas ng dahon sa tangkay
ng panahon. Parang kailan lamang nang
hangaan ng mundo ang Pilipino sa mapa-
yapang pagpapatalsik kay Pangulong
Marcos na namuno bilang diktador mula
1972 hanggang siya’y napalayas ng
EDSA People Power noong Peb. 22–25,
1986.
Bilang pagbabaliktanaw sa maka-
saysayang apat na araw 24 na taon na
ngayon ang nakalipas, inilalathala muli
ng Mabuhay ang kuwento ni Miguel
Rocha, ang military reporter ng Philip-
pines News Agency (PNA) na naroon
mismo sa EDSA mula sa pagsiklab ng
People Power noong Sabado ng hapon,

Bulacan at posibleng kapusin ng tubig
kung hindi uulan sa kalagitnaan ng tag-

Ang Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources (BFAR) ay tumugon sa kaka-
pusan ng tubig at sinimulan na ang pa-
mamahagi sa Gitnang Luzon ng binhi
ng “saline tilapia” o ang uri ng tilapiang
maaaring alagaan sa tubig alat. Ang mga
magsasaka’t namamalaisdaan naman sa
lalawigan ay napilitan nang gumamit ng

thumbs over warnings that “El
Niño” would empty reservoirs,
sear farms and ration water?
Scientists at Britain’s Hadley
Centre for Climate Prediction
and Research cautioned last Au-
gust: El Niño would blast, by
early 2010, Pacific rim countries.
So did the Philippine Atmo-
spheric, Geophysical and Astro-
nomical Services Administration.
The U.S. Climate Prediction Cen-
ter tracked warmer-than-usual
readings 200 meters below ocean
surface.
“El Niño” is shorthand for
shifts of +0.5 to +1.5 degrees
centigrade, above average. This
warms the eastern Pacific
Ocean’s cold water. This cyclical
change, occurs every two to seven
years, and unleashes destructive
droughts.
The 1997-98 El Niño sparked
catastrophic forest fires in South-
east Asia. Smog from blazing In-
donesian forests blanketed air-
ports in Davao and Puerto
Princesa.
But we are a laid-back coun-

ductivity, we almost always frame
it in the context of management,
business and economics. Actually
there’s nothing wrong there, as

Productivity in those terms
alone looks interested only in the
fruits without its roots, the end

effort it needs, and its ultimate
sources and purposes.
It’s notorious for its being
measured always. It’s helplessly
bound to the external and mate-
rial aspects of things. It seems
averse to any entanglement with
its internal and spiritual require-
ments.
It diminishes our personhood
and tends to convert us into au-
tomatons. It shuts out our spiri-
tual self and just builds up our
material and economic self. This
is, of course, impoverishing us.
With this frame of mind our
own work becomes a hindrance to
our own proper development,
even if we only consider the hu-
man side of our development. It
can bear fruits that can taste
sweet but actually are poisonous.
We thus need to unbind our

Far from undermining the prac-
tical and immediate require-
ments of productivity, this truth
of faith enables us to understand
and live them better.
God can only be the source
and purpose of our productivity,
since everything comes from him
and also belongs to him. Even our
talents and other endowments
that allow us to be productive ul-
timately come from him and be-
long to him. We have to acknowl-
edge this truth always.
For this, we need to live our
faith, and consistently apply it to
all aspects of our life, including
our professional life and the end-
less little and ordinary things
that make up our daily life.

It’s time we relate our inter-
est in productivity with our faith.
This particular aspect has long
been neglected. It’s usually taken
for granted, then set aside, and
then rejected and ridiculed. We
need to correct the situation.
With this underlying under-
standing of our productivity, we
expand its coverage not only in
the area of business and econom-
ics but also in all aspects of our
life—when we are alone or with
others, when we are at home, in
the office or with friends, when
we have difficulties or when we
enjoy a good time, etc.
Let’s remember what St. Paul
said: “I know how to live humbly
and I know how to live in abun-
dance (I have been schooled to
every place and every condition),
to be filled and to be hungry, to
have abundance and to suffer
want. I can do all things in him
who strengthens me.” (Phil 4,12-
13)

SOME years back, there was this
news item about a pop drink,
which was a flop in Europe but a
big hit in the United States. “It
really makes you realize that
America is hungry for romance,”
says Lari Williams, who’s selling
Niagara, a Swedish-made ‘energy
drink’ that supposedly gets those
who drink it in the mood for love.
“If I can help married people
bring romance back into the bed-
room, then that’s what I want to
do.”
The “love potion,” as the press
called it, was named after the fa-
mous waterfall between the U.S.
and Canada. The recent U.S.
sales boom has reportedly gener-
ated interest in South Africa,
Australia and parts of Asia.
Does it work all the time? “If
you’re not already attracted to
the person, then it’s not going to
work,” William admits. “They
have to have the spark there be-
cause if you don’t have the spark,
it’s not going to ignite.”
If that’s the case, you better
return to eating foods. After all,
there are many foods that have
been used throughout the ages to

got an answer of “to be raffled pa ang

thing to do for this?
What about my annulment that I

With respect to your first question,
I am hereby advising you that you
must ask your lawyer to prepare a
motion, for filing with the Court of
Appeals, for the early resolution of
the child abuse case.
This motion is usually called a
motion for early resolution and, if
backed up with a good reason, it is
usually granted by the courts, even
by the Supreme Court.
What constitutes a good reason is
dependent upon the facts of the case.
Usually, if the parties are already
too old, or are leaving for abroad with
no definite date of return to the Phil-
ippines, or if there is an extreme ne-
cessity for expediting the resolution
of the case, the courts would normally
agree to give priority to it.
On the filing of a case for annul-
ment of marriage, it does not really
matter whether the spouse that is

In 1984, I signed a deed of conditional
sale, thru installment, payable in 15
years with the GSIS. I started pay-
ing 1985. In July 1988, after paying
installment for more than 3 years, I
executed a deed of sale of rights in
consideration of P164,000.00, with
the buyer assuming my loan obliga-
tions with the GSIS. When I retired
from government service in February
2003 due to privatization of govern-
ment corporations, I found out that
the buyer only paid twice; first, in
1989 and another one in 1997. The
loan is payable in 15 years so it should
have been paid in 2000. I tried to talk
to them for one year, to no avail, to
settle their account because my re-
tirement benefits are being withheld
by the GSIS due to their defaulted
payments. I also learned that GSIS
had been sending notices after notices
for payment demands but they just
disregarded them.
In December 2003, I sent them a
demand letter to comply with our
contract, which is the Deed of Sale of
Rights but still no action from them.
In February 2004, GSIS advised me
to restructure the loan myself so I can
claim my retirement benefits. This
transaction cost me money aside from
the much smaller amount I got from
GSIS due to the buyer’s bad faith.
Previously, retirement was computed
service-based, meaning based on
number of years working in govern-
ment, but when I got my retirement

sequences.
What are the consequences of fail-
ing to comply with a contract?
One is that the offending party
loses whatever rights he may have
acquired under the contract.
Second, he is mandated to return
whatever he may have received un-
der the contract—including the pos-
session of a property that may have
been delivered to him in the mean-
time.
Third, he is also obligated to re-
turn whatever profits he may have
received as a result of the failed agree-
ment.
Fourth, he is obliged to pay for
whatever damages—actual, moral or
exemplary—that the offended or ag-
grieved party may have suffered as a
result of the non-performance of the
obligation.
Fifth, if the matter reached the
courts and the aggrieved party
needed to secure the services of a law-
yer, the offending party shall also be

For first time, civilians defend Armed Forces

his series of first person account of the people’s

NAVY Capt. J. Roilo Golez, the postmaster
general, was the next person I recognized
when I returned to the MND building. In
brief interviews with newsmen, Golez an-
nounced his resignation from the Marcos
government “over nobody’s side.”
By midnight, only the cheers from the
river of people occupying the main roads
around the two camps could be heard from
the building as silence and hush conversa-
tions prevailed inside the building. Soldiers
maintained their posts, Col. Gregorio Hona-
san, chief security officer of Enrile, was in
command of the troops.

By midmorning, President Marcos gave
another press conference on T.V. Behind him
were seated ranking generals led by Ver and
on a side row were cabinet members and
other Marcos loyalists.
Marcos charged Enrile and Ramos of
planning a coup and assassination against
him and Ver and that the plan was hatched
by members of PMA Class 71 led by Colonel
Honasan. Officers watching the T.V. from the
Defense Ministry booed him.
“He is crazy,” one officer remarked.
As Marcos was speaking on television,
armed support for the military rebels began
to pour in. Majority of the provincial com-
manders have called Ramos asking for in-
structions. “Just stay put,” was most of
Ramos’ reply.
About an hour past noon, Enrile and his
force vacated the MND building which was
vulnerable to any form of attack. It stood

IT was an ordinary Saturday, we thought.
The news we were following up at the de-
fense ministry and the AFP general head-
quarters in Camp Aguinaldo revolved around
the “Irrevocable” resignation of Defense
Minister Juan Ponce Enrile which appeared
in daily newspaper but was yet to be con-
firmed by Enrile; and the “defection” of Capt.
Vicente Resurrecion, a member of the mili-
tary reformist group and of the security force
of Enrile. The AFP-GHQ under Gen. Fabian
C. Ver had described him as a “mediocre”
officer.
At the Public Information Service (PIS)
office of the MND, four defense reporters
were typing out their stories. I finished mine
and was heading for the telephone when Sil-
vestre “Yongyong” Afable, Enrile’s spokes-
man, rushed out from his office almost bump-
ing into me. He stopped, tapped at my shoul-
der and said: “Stand-by ka lang, may
malaking istorya.”
I thought Enrile was going to announce
or clarify reports on his resignation.
It was about 3 p.m. I went to the toilet
across the PIS office on the 3rd floor when I
saw some 30 soldiers, in full battle regalia,
along the corridors leading to the office of
Minister Enrile on the same floor.
The mood became electrifying. We did not
know what was going on. I stayed at the PIS
on my way down, I noticed similar troop dis-
position on all floors. I went outside the
building. There were troops deployed
around, a top the building, and on the pa-
rade ground.
On the third floor, when I returned, all
newsmen were told to assemble at the social
hall. Being used to the surroundings includ-
ing the seat normally taken by the Minister,
I positioned myself immediately on the left
side of the chair. We waited for another 30
minutes, TV cameras already in position, a
cluster of microphones and tape recorders
at the center of the conference table and re-
porters moving around prepositioning for
vantage points.
It was 6:30 p.m. The noise died. Every-
body stood up. Enrile came in. Swiftly he was
face to face with me.
“Good evening, Sir,” I managed to smile.
“I do not know whether this will be a good
evening,” Enrile said. I noticed Lt. Gen. Fi-
del V. Ramos beside Enrile as we sat down.
“But anyway, gentlemen, we are ready to
answer your questions,” Enrile, clad in ol-
ive jacket, said as he sat down.
There was a moment of silence. Then
members of the reformist movement in the
AFP came in and gathered behind the de-
fense boss and General Ramos, some in ci-
vilian clothes, others in military fatigue, but

Crame. “We are similarly

By this time, we thought
there would be counterac-
tion by the Marcos-Ver camp.

sault from Marcos loyalists,
it would be massive and we
will surely die. But the sol-
diers were committed to die.
Butz Aquino arrived. He
was interviewed briefly at
the social hall while Enrile
was still on at his second
press conference. Then there
was message that the Presi-
dent was going to speak on
television and radio.
Enrile, invited by a Radio
Veritas reporter to a small
room along the corridors
leading to the social hall, lis-
tened to the President’s mes-

“to stop this stupidity” and
negotiate with him. “I can
express only sadness,” he
added.
Enrile, on radio, dis-
missed the conspiracy charge
as a lie. “I will not surren-
der,” he added, “because I
did not commit a crime. We
are ready to die. If I will be
killed, let my blood be a part
of the Philippine soil. If he
sends troops here, the Presi-
dent will become the butcher
of his own soldiers. He can-
not cow us anymore.”
“Enough is enough Mr.
President, you know that
your time is up.”
“I am morally convinced
that Mrs. Aquino is the duly
elected. President and we
will support her,” declared
Enrile.
People then began to fill
the streets around Camp
Aguinaldo, food donations
poured in. The camp gates
Enrile went on his third press conference
at 3 a.m. amid threats of assault from the
Marcos-Ver camp which by that time were
already considered “enemy forces.”
Sunday’s sunrise saw the troops take up
position. Additional ammunition were being
hauled towards their positions from atop the
building, inside offices, and other strategic
places within the camp as civilians milled at
a parking lot fronting the building. There
was a white “rescue” helicopter hovering
above and after making several rounds dis-
appeared from our view.
We waited for the attack.
It was 7 a.m. We have already spent some
two hours at the ground floor.
During this time, Enrile attended a mass
at the social hall, said by Msgr. Nico Bautista
for the reformists. A string of opposition lead-
ers came to see Enrile offering their support.
Outside the camp gates, the crowd had
thinned out as early as 4 a.m. but by 8 a.m.
the people reemerged in the streets. Support
came from all over and in various ways. Food
was abundant. But the tension was just too
heavy.
Reports of massing up of troops, arrival
of big assault forces, artillery movement and
air attack preparations, were deafening.
Some said there were artilleries moved into
the University of Life, just a couple of kilo-
meters away but this could not be confirmed;
military tacticians from the reformist group
apparently were not interested in such re-
ports because they knew that even without
moving artilleries to the university, the camp
is within the range of artillery fire from Fort
Bonifacio where most of the heavy arma-
ments, including tanks and cannons, were
kept and still under the disposition of Army
Constabulary.
In a press conference at Camp Crame,
Ramos belittled Marcos: “He is like a tacti-
cal officer of the company grade level. He was
talking of company formation when as head
of a country, he must be more statesman-
like.” Ramos was reacting to the instructions
given by Marcos to General Ver to use only
small arms in attacking the Camp Crame and
mapping out troop deployment to assault the
camp.
As Ramos spoke, an armored column of
Philippine Marines, consisting of seven
tanks, 14 jeeps and six six-by-six trucks with
two helicopters as air cover, altogether com-
prising one battalion of 400 to 500 men un-
der the command of Brig. Gen. Artemio
Tadiar, Marines Commandant, were poised
to attack Camp Crame but were stopped on
its tracks by the people who knelt, swarmed
and gave flowers to the troopers. The con-
tingent had to pull out against the over-
whelming pressure of the Filipinos, who for
the first time in history had defended an

EDSA ’86: People’s revolt is over ... it’s time to rebuild

up the office, gave a situation report and re-
quested for a photographer. The information
office was beginning to be filled with news-
men. Filipinos and foreigners, each one com-
ing in with the same question: “What is hap-
pening, why all those soldiers out there.”
The reply, of course, was: “We do not
know.”
At about 4:15 p.m., a UH1H “Huey” heli-
copter landed at the parade ground fronting
the MND building. Roger Margallo, the PNA
photographer sent by the office was already
at the PIS. I instructed him to take shots of
the movement and activity around the heli-
copter.
He returned 15 minutes later with the
information and shots of soldiers unloading
sacks of guns and bullets from the helicop-
ter. A few minutes later, a BO-105 civilian
helicopter landed near the Huey.
Peering through the window from the
third floor, I saw nothing significant going
on around the newly-landed helicopter. We
were told it belonged to Minister Enrile. I
did not bother to ask — my mind still re-
volving around what was going to happen.
A young officer, whom I recognized only
by face and thought was a civilian employee
of the defense ministry, his waist bulging
with a gun and ammunition, entered the PIS
office, said “Hello” to me and then left im-
mediately.
“This is it,” he said, as he passed by me.
What is it?, I thought.
I went to the press lounge. It was not long
when Bing Formento, Inquirer reporter,
barged into the defense press corps lounge
at the PIS and, breathing sharply, an-
nounced: “Aarestuhin daw si Enrile.”
He said he just came from the residence
of Enrile on Morado Street in Dasmariñas
Village, Makati. His story: “We were told by
Ma’am (Mrs. Cristina C. Enrile) that the mi-
nister was going to be arrested. She was hys-
terical.”
My thought swept back to the combat-
ready soldiers. I went to the ground floor and,
everyone was armed with high-powered
modern assault weapons.
The silence was broken, “Sir, the first
question. Is it true the President has ordered
your arrest?” We all got down to business.
“Well,” came the reply. “I would preface
this by saying that there was an informa-
tion to round up the members of the reform
movement. And this afternoon, my boys
came to my house and caused me to get out
and come to this place because we might all
be rounded up.”
Question followed after question and each
was answered directly until it was clear.
Enrile, leading the reformist movement, de-
clared an open rebellion against President
Marcos, a former close ally whom he served
for the past 20 years.
“I am with Minister Enrile,” Ramos fol-
lowed. “And the reason for my being here,
ladies and gentlemen, is that because the
Armed Forces of the Philippines has ceased
to be the real Armed Forces of the Philip-
pines, which is supposed to be the defender
of public safety and enforcer of the law; and
what has developed is that there has become
an elite armed forces within the Armed
Forces of the Philippines that no longer rep-
resents the rank and file and the officer corps
of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.”
Then came an open declaration of war
against Ver: “If there is going to be shoot-
ing, it will not start from us here. It will be
started by the groups that are loyal to Gen-
eral Ver and to the President.”
“We are prepared to die,” both Enrile and
Ramos said.
About 300 men took positions in strate-
gic areas around and inside the building. The
lights were switched off in most parts of the
building. The only places left lighted were
the social hall, the office of Minister Enrile,
the PIS office and the building lobby on the
ground floor.
The PIS now turned into a very busy
newsroom.
The news of the military revolt in the
Philippines has swept the world. — PNA
communications and elec-
tricity. But there was none of
that sort. The telephone
lines continued to burn and
there were no single incident
of power failure, leading us
to believe an intricate secu-
rity network is in place.
On the radio, I heard His
Eminence, Jaime Cardinal
Sin, appealing to the people
respond to the call of sup-
port by Enrile and Ramos.
At the camp gate No. 1,
there was no sign of activity.
I passed through it expecting
tight security check but I did
not see a single soldier man-
ning the gates.
It was about 8 p.m. I got
home, just near Camp Agui-
naldo, to take my dinner and
returned immediately, still
not noticing any sign of ac-
tivity at the camp gate on my
way back.
At the Defense Ministry,
tension heightened. Soldiers
mixed with the few civilians,
most of them newsmen.
The conversation was
low: Each had story to tell.
And it was startingly clear
that the men were prepared
to die.
During these moments,
bonds of friendship grew
strong.
Everybody, civilians and
soldiers alike had something
to say but the cloud of anxi-
ety loomed heavy above our
heads.
I could not tell anymore
what time it was. But there
was a second press confer-
ence later that evening. It
didn’t matter to me now. I
sage from the transistor ra-
dio held out by the open for
an immediate airing of the
response from Enrile.
The President accused
Enrile of conspiracy to stage
a coup that was to have
taken place that evening. He
also threatened to wipe out

teer members of the “food
brigade” were the only ones
allowed inside the camp. By
11:00 p.m. some 50,000
people have gathered around
the two camps and people’s
power was beginning to
emerge.

day peaceful “people’s revolution” from beginning
to end. Here is the last installment of his series of
first person account of the people’s power at its best.
WITH the helicopter gunship and the two
jetfighters already on the side of Defense
Minister Juan Ponce Enrile and General Fi-
del Ramos; and with the entire metropoli-
tan people and from nearby provinces al-
ready shielding the rebel forces, it was just
impossible for ground assault to be launched
without killing thousands of people.
Meanwhile, support to the Enrile-Ramos
camp began to overflow at that very moment
of extreme tension. Four hundred paratroop-
ers in an undisclosed location, the 15th
Strike Wing, the 5th Fighter Wing, the
Villamor Air base (VAB) Civil Disturbance
Control (CDC) units about to be sent to dis-
perse the crowd, the 2nd military Intelli-
gence Group (MIG), the Naval Defense
Force, the GHQ battalion manning the com-
mand post the Clark Air Force Base Com-
mand (CABCOM) of 800 officers and men,
the 205th Helicopter Wing and requests for
safe conduct pass from elements of the would
be assault force, were among the major units
now under the command of the “rebel” mili-
tary commander, General Ramos.
Then news on the radio said the Presi-
dent had already left the country. This
brought Enrile and Ramos to the streets to
announce victory and proclaim Feb. 24 “Araw
ng Kalayaan”. The mass of humanity
cheered. The fighter planes continued to fly
overhead giving air cover to the rebel forces
and the people’s power.
Back at the rebel headquarters, every-
body seemed to be celebrating. Soldiers em-
braced each other. Friends and strangers
hugged and people now breathed a sigh of
relief. Outside, people had started to move
out, jubilant after hearing the pronounce-
ment of victory by Enrile and Ramos.
But all the celebrations died down when
news spread that Marcos is still in the coun-
try and was to give a statement. Marcos ap-
peared on television Channel 4 later to make
a last ditch stand to announce that he was
still in control. There were only four officers
beside him this time: General Fabian Ver,
Rear Admiral Brillante Ochoco, Brig. Gen.
Felix Brawner and Navy Capt. Eriberto
Varona. During the televised press confer-
ence, General Ver informed the President:
We are ready to attack sir. We have two
fighter planes hovering above awaiting my
orders to stage the air strike.” Apparently,
Ver did not know that the pilots on those jets
were already taking orders from Ramos.
The Marcos press conference abruptly
disappeared from the tube. We learned later
that rebel forces had assaulted the govern-
ment-owned TV station on Bohol Avenue in
Quezon City and were in control. Later in
the afternoon, Channel 4 was back on the
air, this time manned by rebels and guarded
by people’s power. It began broadcasting
what had long been absent on television, the
voice of the people.
The takeover of the main component of
Marcos’ propaganda arm dealt a severe blow
to the “enemy forces,” which at that time
were heavily concentrated in Malacañang.
The rebels, this time, began the assault.
Air strikes were launched. Helicopter gun-
ships dropped rockets at Malacañang
grounds, signalling a warning for the Presi-
dent to step down. Then another fleet of he-
licopters struck at Villamor Air Base and
destroyed “flying machines” still in the
hands of the Marcos/Ver camp.
Later in the evening, President Marcos
appeared again on television, this time over
Channel 9. There were no generals behind
Marcos this time. Only members of his fam-
ily were present. During the press confer-
ence, Marcos declared curfew and announced
that his inauguration would continue as
scheduled.
Cory Aquino was herself scheduled to talk
at the Club Filipino at Greenhills. The re-
bellion, however, was far from over. Enrile
appealed anew for the people’s support.
Inside the rebel base, there was a mixed
feeling of emotions. Soldiers were no longer
tense. There was a feeling of jubilation for
some of them realized that it was only a
matter of time before Marcos was deposed.
But there was also anxiety because of the
few scattered units still loyal to Marcos that
were threatening to make a “do or die” as-
sault.
Dismissing this as impossible, I went
home to take a rest and to change clothes. I
returned to Camp Crame in time to watch
on television the inauguration of both
Marcos and Aquino the next day.
Feb. 25. The interest centered on Marcos.
Everybody was turned into Channel 9. On
the tube, Marcos was taking his oath before
Supreme Court Chief Justice Ramon Aquino.
The First Lady, Imelda Marcos, was by his
side. Only a few hundred loyalists, attended
the oathtaking. Then the whole proceedings
suddenly disappeared from the tube. We
learned that rebel forces have succeeded in
assaulting the tower of the station. Three
people were killed.
Outside the rebel base people tuned in to
radio cheered Mrs. Corazon Aquino who took
her oath of office as President of the Philip-
pines before Senior Justice Claudio
Teehankee. There was jubilation in the mass
of humanity when Aquino announced the
promotion of Ramos to full four-star general
and appointed him Chief of Staff of the
Armed Forces, Enrile was named as Defense
minister and Vice President Salvador Lau-
rel, Prime Minister designate.
But the fight was not yet over.
People kept their vigil in the streets
against possible attack from the remaining
Marcos loyalist troops. A series of televised
press briefings from Enrile, Ramos, Aquino
and Laurel and other leaders of the news
government continued throughout Tuesday.
Over at Malacañang, we monitored over
radio that people were inching towards the
presidential palace. Reports said two helicop-
ters were seen taking off from Malacañang
and the people surged.
It was 9 p.m. News reports indicated that
President Marcos and his family were on
their way towards Clark Air Base where two
military jets waited to ferry them to the
United States and out of the country.
There was celebration immediately in the
streets.
Stereo music blared and there was danc-
ing. Car horns sounded. There was ringing
of church bells. The whole Metro Manila
turned into a festival.
“It was like celebrating my birthday,
Christmas, and New Year’s rolled into one,”
was the typical remark of people on learn-
ing of Marcos’ exit.
Indeed, February 22 was no ordinary Sat-
urday. It is a day that will be remembered
throughout history. The gallant stand of the
two men in Camp Aguinaldo will remain in
the hearts of men.
The revolt was over. The time to rebuild
is the order of the day. — PNA

ought. But the Spirit himself asks for us with unspeak-
able groanings.” (Heb 8,26)
We should try to keep this truth in mind always, but
especially in our work, making the necessary adjustments
and adaptations so that even in our mundane activities,
we can always remember it and allow it to shape the way
we work.
This truth can even greatly help us when we have to
tackle with difficulties and our own weaknesses plus the
temptations around. It will keep us going in spite of what-
ever, and doing it with gusto and sense of purpose, un-
derstanding why things are the way they are.
For example, with respect to our weaknesses and temp-
tations, this truth will tell us that these events and ele-
ments in our life actually indicate where we have to
struggle.
Putting us to the edge, they actually invite us to go
beyond ourselves and to always go back to God. We should
never depend on ourselves alone. We are nothing with-
out God. These weaknesses and temptations, in fact, are
clear occasions when God tells us he is very close to us.

help us to be serene and cheerful always, optimistic in

Angela was a bit distracted. She looked around the
chapel and sensed someone was watching her. But she
didn’t notice anyone behind or beside her except three or
four praying old women up front.
Carefully, she again scanned the pews and spied the
protruding head of a boy seated in the second to the first
pew from the entrance. He must have been about five or
six years old.
As their eyes met, the boy smiled at her and swiftly
looked away to avoid her stare. “It isn’t good to stare,”
Angela rectified. She went to the boy and asked, “Do you
like photos?”
The boy didn’t say anything and only continued to
smile at her.
“Look, if you keep quiet and allow me to take my shots,
then maybe I may just take a shot of you too,” she tried
explaining to the silent boy.
[SIGH!] She bent down a little to position for her sec-
ond shot.
“SMILE!” the same voice went as the camera went
[CHH-CLICK!]
Rather irritated, she turned to the boy and said, “Look,
kid! I’m just trying to get a good shot. Can you please
keep quiet?”
Speechless and motionless
The boy continued speechless and motionless in the
pew. Angela became impatient with this apparent sign of
disrespect. She sighed and once again went for another
shot. The same voice said “SMILE!”
As she turned around to confront the boy, she was
surprised to see him pointing at the altar.
“Yeah, right! You’re not telling me that someone up
there said SMILE. You’re the only boy here.” She ob-
served, however, that his finger didn’t point at the people
up front. He was pointing at the monstrance.
“And don’t tell me it’s that piece of bread. Bread can’t
talk!” Angela called the host ‘bread’ because as an ag-
nostic, she didn’t care less whether God existed or not.
“Excuse me, ma’am,” a woman came unnoticed into
the scene.
“Yes?” Angela tried to regain her composure.
“Has my son caused you any problems?” the lady
asked.
“Oh, so he’s your son. Well, I was just trying to get a
shot and he would distract me by saying, SMILE!”
“I’m awfully sorry if he said that,” the woman smiled
as she gestured to her son to come to her, “but you might
want to know that my son was born deaf and dumb.”
“But…,” Angela could not believe what she heard.
The woman genuflected and led her son towards the
exit.
“But who could have…,” Angela said with a bewildered
face.
“…said SMILE?” the lady completed her question.
“Yeah,” Angela said very perplexed.
“Why don’t you ask Jesus,” the woman smiled and
silently left.
Angela couldn’t believe all that had just happened. She
knelt down and for the first time in her life she prayed:
Jesus, teach me to smile in my soul.

German, tagapamahala ng An-
gat River Hydro Electric Power
Plant (ARHEPP) ng National
Power Corporation (Napocor) na
namamahala sa dam, bumaba na
sa 195 metro ang tubig sa dam
noong Biyernes ng tanghali,
Pebrero 19.
Ito ay dahil sa patuloy na pag-
papadaloy ng tubig sa mga kon-
sesyunaryo ng Metropolitan Wa-
terworks and Sewerage System
(MWSS) na nagpapadaloy na-
man sa tahanan ng may 12
milyong residente ng Kalakhang
Maynila, kabilang ang mga nasa
lalawigan ng Rizal at ilang bayan
ng Cavite.
Dahil dito, ipinayo ng Mala-
kanyang ang pagtitipid sa pag-
gamit ng tubig partikular na sa
Metro Manila. Ngunit para sa
mga kasapi ng Sagip Sierra
Madre Environment Society,
hindi ito sapat; sa halip ay dapat
ding tutukan ang pangangalaga
sa kabundukan.
Ipinakita sa telebisyon ni
Deputy Presidential Spokesper-
son Charito Planas noong Hu-
webes ng gabi kung paano ang
praktikal na pagtitipid sa tubig.
Isang halimabawa niya ang
pagsasahod sa tubig na pinag-
hugasan ng pinggan, o kaya
pinaglabahan na magagamit
pandilig sa halaman at pambu-
hos sa inidoro.
Kasunod naman ng payo ng
Malakanyang para sa pagtiitipid
ay ang pag-oorganisa ng mga wa-
ter patrol na itinalagang mag-
ulat ng mga tumatagas na tubig
mula sa mga tubo sa Kalakhang
Maynila.
Ipinayo na rin ng ARHEPP
ang pagsasagawa ng “cloud seed-
ing” sa may 63,000 ektaryang
Angat Watershed. Ngunit, katu-
lad ng planong cloud seeding sa
Hilagang Luzon, hindi rin ito
agad maisagawa dahil sa kawa-
lan ng ulap sa papawirin.
Ang cloud seeding ay ang
pagsasabog ng asin sa makaka-
pal na ulap sa himpapawid u-
pang ito ay bumagsak at maging
ulan na didilig sa mga natu-
tuyong bukirin at makadagdag
sa tubig sa mga dam at kailugan.

Ricky Silverio, anak at kapangalan ng San Rafael mayor, diskwalipikado ng Comelec

SAN RAFAEL, Bulacan — Diniskwali-
pika ng Ikalawang Dibisyon ng Commis-
sion on Elections (Comelec) ang kandi-
dato sa pagka-kongresista na anak at ka-
pangalan ng alkalde ng bayang ito noong
Pebrero 18.
Batay sa anim na pahinang desisyong
nilagdaan nina Commissioner Nicodemo
Ferrer, Elias Yusoph at Lucenito Tagle,
ang certificate of candidacy (COC) ng
negosyanteng si Ricardo “Ricky” S.
Silverio Jr., ay kanselado at ipinatanggal
ang pangalan nito sa listahan ng mga
opisyal na kandidato sa halalan sa Mayo.
Si Ricky ay isa sa mga anak ni Ricardo
C. Silverio Sr., ang alkalde ng bayang ito
at dating Kongresista ng Ikatlong
Distrito ng Bulacan.
Ang mag-ama ay nakatakda sanang
maglaban sa pagka-Kongresista ng
Ikatlong Distrito ng Bulacan sa darating
na eleksiyon.
Si Ricky ay kandidato ng Puwersa ng
Masang Pilipino (PMP) ni dating Pangu-
long Joseph Estrada, samantalang ang
kanyang ama na kilala sa tawag na “Tata
Carding” ay kandidato ng Lakas-Kampi-
CMD.
Ang pagkadiskwalipika ni Ricky ay
batay sa petisyong isinumite ng kanyang
ama sa Comelec na nagsasabing mag-
hahatid ng kalituhan sa mga botante ang
kandidatura ni Ricky.
Sinabi pa ni Tata Carding na si Ricky
ay hindi residente ng San Rafael at
walang kakayahang maglunsad ng
kampanya para sa buong ditrito.
Bukod dito, si Ricky ay hindi bumoto
sa halalan noong 2004 at 2007, kaya’t
ipinatanggal ang kanyang pangalan sa
listahan ng mga botante sa bayang ito
batay sa desisyon ng San Rafael Munici-
pal Trial Court noong Disyembre 3.
Sa panig naman ni Ricky, inamin niya
na ang kanyang ginagamit na tirahan ay
matatagpuan sa 26-D Makati Tuscany
Condominium, 6751 Ayala Avenue,
Makati City ngunit hindi raw niya
inabandona ang tirahan niya sa bayang
ito.
Dahil sa pagkakadiskwalipika kay
Ricky, si Gob. Joselito Mendoza na
lamang ang natitirang katunggali ni Tata
Carding sa halalan sa Mayo.
Si Gob. Mendoza na kandidato ng Lib-
eral Party ay taga-Bocaue, ngunit matapos
mahalal na gobernador noong 2007 ay
nagpatayo ng bahay sa Barangay Tartaro
sa bayan ng San Miguel at nagpalipat ng
kanyang rehistrasyon bilang botante noong
Marso ng nagdang taon.
Batay sa mga naunang pahayag ni
Tata Carding, sinabi niya na si Ricky ay
posibleng pinatakbo lamang ni Mendoza
at ng kapatid nitong si dating Gob. Josie
Dela Cruz, upang lituhin sa pagboto ang
mga botante sa Ikatlong Distrito ng
Bulacan.
Pinasinungalingan naman ito ni Dela
Cruz at sinabing hindi niya kilala o naka-
kaharap man lamang ang batang si Ricky.
