S
o here we are, the first issue after Christmas, and I’m already thinking about
. Now, to be honest, I wasn’t thinkingabout rogue black holes or super solar flares, but there are plenty of other things that alsoqualify. For instance, our short stories this time aroundhave a definite theme: Saving the Earth. Findingthese two stories in the slushpile together iswhat you call ‘a happy accident.’ Far be it fromthe Overlords to look a gift theme in the face.So here’s the question - if you had theknowledge or ability, what would you do tosave the earth? Our stories this issue grapplewith that question. In
Seismic Morality
author Richard S. Levineasks that very question. If you knew you couldpredict a possible earthquake hours in advance, would you warn people? Even if your warningmight cause a panic?
Hurricane predicon is over a hundred
years old. You’re talking about guessingwhether something is going to happen andpeople can’t even see it.“We’ve been doing 30 second earthquake
predicons for years now.”
“I’m sorry, Dr. Erdbe. I’d like to help, but
my hands are ed. I could bring down
the whole studio with one lawsuit if noearthquake occurs and someone dies in thepanic.”“So you won’t even let me present thedata.”“We can’t. I’m going to have to hang up
now. Good luck.”
Escalating things, in
Earth Watch,
Neil Carstairsimagines what would happen if the entireplanet was under attack and only a decades-old secret organization stood between victoryand defeat.

‘Vampires number 24,000 plus,’ a Royal AirForce technician reported from his console.Robin smiled at the callsign given to the
incoming cra. The screens were awash
with red tracks, falling over the North Polelike a curtain over the stage of a theatre. Onhis screen a message scrolled across fromCentral Command.‘CenCom authorises ICBM launch,’ hereported. His words brought a momentarysilence to the room. Anne looked up fromher console.
‘Space Staon has visual images.
‘Show them,’ Robin felt his breath leave
his body as the relayed image ickeredacross a plasma screen. At rst they were
only pinpricks of light crawling across theblack backdrop of space. It was the sheernumber of them that frightened him.He looked down at his hands and sawthey were trembling. In
The Adventures of the Sky Pirate, Chapter 19 - Courting Danger
, Cooper Flynn meetssomebody even more dangerous than anunknown assassin—fiery redhead ClarissaMkDougal.“One more salvo,” she barked, a strand of hair blowing free and falling into her face
unnoced. There was another blast from the clis
whistling toward
Tanith
, the cannonballnarrowly missing the foremast, taking out
a spoer crewman on deck. Marking this,
the captain looked down at her chart andsaid, “Hard a ‘port!” and the crew all leanedto starboard, leaning into the steep turn.As she made the turn, she presented herbelly and starboard side squarely to the big
cli-side guns. By virtue of the speed of the
maneuver combined with the turn,
Tanith
slowed even further and was set up, for all
