my music video was
the predicted age

audience, so it seemed logical to use them to evaluate my productions, to test my predictions. The
reason for getting audience feedback was to see if I had achieved the aims I had set out to
accomplish from my productions and that was to attract and appeal to my target audience and
successfully promote the band Killamonjambo. The research method I used to collect this data was
observation self-report questionnaire, whereby the participants watched the music video then had
the opportunity to complete the questionnaire without the influence of myself which eliminates the
effects of bias, through an interview setting questionnaire.

The Graph above shows the spread of the gender of the participants used for my feedback stage.
33% of participants were male this wasn’t ideal as from prior research during the planning stage and
my own thoughts, it was more likely to appeal to a male audience rather than female, although in
retrospect’s using a larger proportion of female participants of 67% it may make for a more critical
analysis. It is important to get a good mixture of male and female, as it will give more reliable results
as it will have a more well rounded perspectives from both sexes, and will hopefully take into
account gender differences, for example Women may find degrading representations of females in a
music video more offensive than males would.

the numbers that appeared most often and the mean average of the all the data collected is
39/12=3.25. 3.25 are above the average of the range 1-5 which is a positive result and from this
score, I can make the assumption that most of the audience enjoyed the music video. Also to
achieve a 5 is a very significant result; it was given by a male participant and supports the results of
prior research, but is only a singular result and lacks other corresponding views from the other male
participants.

This question is important as to successfully promote a band using a music video, it is fundamental
to make a video that hold an audience’s attention and one they find enjoyable, it is fair to say a
longer a person watches a video the more influence it can have on them. The mean average is
40/12=3.3. 3.3 is above the average of the range of 1-5 which shows that it managed to hold most of
the audience’s attention. One of the male participants gave the score of 5 which showed that he
found the video very interesting, both the narrative and visuals, also complements the results of my
research into the target audience.

How do you rate the camera work and editing?

This was a technical assessment based question and the results from this question would determine
how professional my music video looked and how well I had created a flowing sequence that the
audience could understand. The first point I am going to take form this graph is that I had no scores
given below 3, which shows a good level of success with all results received above the mean average
of my range. The mean average is 48/12=4, 4 is a very respectable score and combined with my own
personal view I felt this was one of the strongest components of my Music video. Also it is worth
noting that I received my highest proportion of rating 5 from a male and a female participant, this
shows a similarity from both sexes.

I got a wider range of results from this question ranging from 1-5, although unfortunately the
standard of mise-en-scene received a rating of 1 which shows a participant thought it was rather
poor. It is important to take this into account even though the participant may have not fitted my
target audience; an improvement I may have looked to make on another attempt would be to use a
wider range of locations that were more interesting and desirable. The mean average of the results
collected is 44/12=3.6, 3.6 is a high average considering I received an anomaly rating of 1, this shows
that compared to other 11 participants, his view was not shared. Again two ratings of 5 shows that
some participants thought a high standard of M-en-S was used.

too short correct length too long didn't know

The data collected from this question shows that over half, 58% found that the video was the correct
length and when carrying out research and planning I found that the length of most of the videos I
analysed were between 2 minutes 30 seconds and 3 minutes and my video was 2 minutes 37
seconds, this supports my findings from the questionnaire.

Would you watch it again?

One of the most important qualities of a music video is engaging the audience and a perfect means
of analysing the successfulness of how well the audience was engaged with the production is
whether they would watch it again, often the most successful and popular songs and artists in recent
years will also have a music video that is easily recognisable and well-known to boost the popularity
of the song. The fact that 42% of the participants asked said yes they would watch it again and a
further 33% asked were undecided is a relatively positive result as it shows that a larger proportion
would watch it again than not, which shows I was successful in creating a music video that engaged
the audience and would attract them to watch my production again.
Does the video reflect the style of music?
Yes No Undecided

75%

It is important that from a music video you create the right image for band or artist, for example if
you are trying to promote a rap group; you would make a music video with Goths in with black
make-up on singing in an old haunted castle. The style of the Music is a mixture of dance electronic
genre Breakbeat and Dubstep made as a remix originated from Ska, so there is enough scope to
allow for some cross-genre styles to be created. Alcohol, drug abuse and dancing are all associated
as major stereotypes of my style of music and although often give it a negative representation are
still very important, by changing the representation of the damaging effects of alcohol abuse on
youth culture, it is possible to reflect the style of music with a contrasting emphasis. I achieved a
great level of success with 75% of the participants stating the video did reflect the style of music,
which to make an even more positive result no participants felt that the video did not reflect the
style of music.

Does the video successfully promote the band?

Yes
25%
Undecided
33%

No
42%
This was the most disappointing result achieved from all my questions with No being the highest
proportion of 42% of all the participants, the most logical reason in my point of view for this negative
outcome was due to my video showing alcohol abuse in youth culture and with a complicated
narrative could have been wrongly interpreted as glorifying alcohol abuse within the youth. If I was
looking to improve my video to promote my band and song with a stronger image, I would adapt and
recreate my narrative to develop a stronger negative representation of the effects of alcohol; this
would involve simplifying the plot and making it easier to understand. This was an integral factor of
my research as to successfully promote was a fundamental aspect of the production, although this
could be a result of the amount of females used when carrying out my audience feedback, as when
predicting my target audience profile, I felt my song would appeal more to males.

On a scale of 1 to 5 how do you rank the music

video?
6

1 2 3 4 5

This question is a summary of the results collected from the other questions given to the
participants, so it is an important question for gathering an overall rating of my music video. The
mean score of all the results collected is 3.58 which is a good average score and to only achieve one
result below 3 can also be looked on as a success as well as two results of 5 out of 5. To maybe
improve my video given a second opportunity would be to give it a clearer narrative and maybe not
use alcohol consumption as some participants felt it give the band a negative representation and
didn’t help successfully promote them.

There were some questions that didn’t provide quantitative data, as taken from all of the questions
above, whereas some questions provided more detailed personal qualitative data. Here are some of
the best answers taken from each question:

Can you suggest anything that could improve the appeal?

“Clearer narrative”, “use more people to create more realistic gangs” and “better climax”.
Were there any aspects that you find offensive?

“Negative representation of youth”, “male drinking” and “thug culture”

Was there any part you found confusing or hard to understand?

“Story line”, “confusing narrative” and “purpose of the masks”

What is the best part of the production?

“The Edit”, “the masks”, “Mise-en-scene”, “fading of an image over another” and “special effects”
