OIS COMMUNITY BULLETIN

Earthquake/Fire
Several continental and
oceanic tectonic plates lie
under the Japan archipelago.
This is the cause of frequent
earthquakes, active volcanoes
and hot spring waters. SOIS
will be holding an earthquake
and fire drill sometime next
week. We take a serious
approach to preparing our
community for potential
disasters. We suggest
reviewing home procedures
with your family this week. I
recommend reading Amanda
Ripleys The Unthinkable:
Who Survives When Disaster
Strikes - And Why. Ripley
reinforces the idea of
practicing what to do during
emergencies so it will be
automatic in a real situation.

Knowledge Bowl
The annual middle school
Knowledge Bowl will take
place Monday December 12 in
the SOIS library at 14:40.
There are several categories of
questions, including school
curriculum. Teachers are
supplying questions to our
Masters of Ceremony, Mr. Mike
McGill.

our high school winter concert Tuesday December 6 at 18:30. The
string ensemble will be playing the dicult original version of
Ottorino Respighis Suite No. 3 and Bachs Little Fugue in g
minor. Fans of Harry Potter will recognize the compositions of
John Williams which the winds ensemble will be playing. The
high school choirs song list includes an Arabic song, with many
Christmas pieces. Everyone is invited to kick-off the holiday
season with some world-class music in a gorgeous venue.

WJAA Tournaments

Student Council
OIS and SIS student
representatives work together on
our two schools student council.
They hold events that bring the
two schools together and build
community spirit.
The high school student council
is hosting their annual student
Christmas party after school on
Friday December 16.
On Monday December 5, student
council is overseeing a school
clean up during long homeroom.
The students scrub and tidy the
classrooms and hallways. This is
traditionally done on a weekly
basis in local schools, and it is
nice our school can get this
experience a couple times a year.

The middle school student-athletes completed the first winter

season with Western Japan Athletic Association (WJAA)
tournaments this past weekend. Boys basketball A team
finished in third place out of 8 teams. Three SOIS girls soccer
teams participated in the tournament on Rokko Island and the
A team finished runners up with a loss in the finals in penalty
kicks.
The high school basketball teams, both boys and girls, will
have their WJAA tournaments next weekend. We are hosting
the girls basketball Friday and Saturday and the boys will travel
to Canadian Academy.
The importance of being physically active, participating on a
team and handling winning and losing with grace are lessons
the students are learning participating in extracurricular sports.
These are traits that will serve them well after they leave school.

International mindedness
The concept of international mindedness is infused throughout
the International Baccalaureate curriculum. One way we
address this is by having a diverse faculty. 11 different
nationalities are represented in our faculty. We have teachers
from New Zealand, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Brazil,
France, America, Japan, Philippines, Mexico and Romania.
These differing perspectives to education enrich the school
experience for our students.
We encourage frequent
interaction and sharing of educational philosophy among staff.

Career Exploration

We are looking for any
professional women in our
parent community that would
like to participate in the high
school career day on Monday
December 12 from 13:30 15:30. If interested, please
