Pre-Production
We began by studying the actual genre of a thriller and
Research viewed some texts of that genre and sub-genres with
it. This included films such as ‘One Hour Photo’ and
‘Phonebooth’. We then studied conventions of a thriller
and such as the events of the narrative, but also the
characters and this allowed us to make a decision
towards our opening.
Planning We also decided to focus on a film-noir genre at this
stage so we focused our time on researching this kind
of style including lighting and voiceovers.
Our focus in creativity for the opening sequence was to

more of an original idea in comparison to thriller of the
current time period.
Our characters were against the level of creativity as
they were conventional with the genre of a thriller.
The genre of a romantic thriller was not a popular one
amongst the common one but was effective towards
our target audience.

research into the genre and background of film noir in
order for us to work with that and create our own

in our work.

Our shots changed from pre-productions plan and shot

The research and planning which we did
for our production was the shot list and
screenplay etc. This was a key part of
our production as it co-ordinated what
was being done and when.
Creativity was used in production as we
spontaneously decided to change our
shots according to the cameras quality
and to make the narrative clearer
through a technical point of view. For
example, we changed a shot of both
characters into a single shot of them
each other to convey the loneliness
between them as they are no longer
together.
Digital technology at this stage included
the camera equipment and also the flip
cameras as they were used for our
video logs and as they were connected
via an internal usb, it was the perfect
design for a quick and easy upload to
youtube.
Similar texts of this thriller genre mixed
with film noir styles such as Max Payne
would be able to convey their noir style
better as they have better software and
equipment but we do feel as if this was
a good representation of darkness and
sadness through the work using lighting
techniques and a noir style therefore
making it easily representative of this
genre.
The main appeal we had during this
Post-
Production
Post-Production included editing and
sound which we had already planned
in our research and planning stage.
For example, in our shot list we had
already stated the length of the shot
and the transition therefore editing was
easily done because it was already
planned.
Our creativity during post production
was mainly to do with the our sound as
we made it from nothing but also
because we had not planned it in an
earlier stage but only had a vague idea
of what to do.
This was done well according to our
feedback of the final work therefore
this stage of creativity was successful.
Digital technology was widely used in
this point of the project because we
used a wide variety of programs for
different tasks. For example we used
the internet to post our final work
through YOUTUBE. We editing our
work together on iMovie. And created
the sound on garage band and then
imported it through iTunes and into
iMovie.
While the editing stage, we used
iMovie to take advantage of effects
which would ultimately complete our
work to enable the audience through
the use of codes to convey the
convention. For example, in our final
work the falshback is saturated to
convey the flashback and appeal to a
happier audience in comparsion to the
dark noir style audience.
