Sherrie Cramer won’t take “no” for an answer. Her 16-year-old adopted daughter Katie Crameris diagnosed with leukemia and needs a matching marrow/stem cell donor to prolong andhopefully save her life. Katie is Chinese and is of Zhuang ancestry. The Zhuang are the largestminority group in China and most of them livein the central and western part of Guangxiregion in Southern China. So far, even after searching all registriesthroughout the world, a perfect match for Katiehas not been found. The Asian American DonorProgram continues to host drives that attractChinese Americans, here in the Bay Area andbeyond. To this end, Sherrie Cramer, who lives inSacramento, is travelling to China to conductmarrow/stem cell drives to increase the numberof Chinese available as potential donors. Cramerwill spend two weeks in China and will try toconduct marrow/stem cell drives in Liuzhou andNanning.

Project Michelle was started by Michelle Maykin who wasdiagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia when she wasonly 25 years old. Michelle fought to protect those whowished to donate life-saving bone marrow and organs.Unfortunately, Michelle passed away last year, 2 yearsafter she was diagnosed, after struggling unsuccessfullyto find a bone marrow match. Now her mother, MeganWilliams is continuing this cause for her. Right now, withthe lack of protection, people who donate bone marrowand organs DO NOT receive paid leave from work, andthis life-saving action can ultimately lead to terminationof employment. If SB1304 passes, people who donatebone marrow will receive 5 days paid leave, and thosewho donate an organ will receive 30 days paid leavefrom work.Petition for SB1304.
Michelle Maykin passed away inJuly 2009. Her legacy continues tohelp make a difference in another person’s life.
