salad, and dessert Pot Luck. Our meeting begins with socializing at 6:00 PM and the business meeting will start at 6:30.
We will be hearing a legislative update from Felice and Marilyn. We will also be collecting a donation for Christmas gifts for Su

Kathleen Callahana son, Jonathon, survived an 8.4 earthquake in Santiago,
Chile.
Wilma Springer and her husband, Fred, traveled to Israel September 2-12. After attending the Zion
Heritage Center dedication in Jerusalem, they were invited to a quecial event with Shimone Peres, past
President of Israel.
Joanne Sheppard and husband,
John, had their Japanese family
visit in August for one week. Her
adopted daughter, Yuki, and their
three children stayed busy with
swimming in Bobs pool, going to
the beach, seeing the Pirate show
and visiting Disneyland. Our Labor Day weekend our oldest son and his wife visited, youngest son and
wife visited, plus many friends gathered to help celebrate our 65th wedding anniversary.
Gary and DeLois Hoover had a busy summer. We spent 3 weeks in the South from Washington D.C. to Tampa, Florida. The drive was beautiful. We loved the coast of North Carolina, Charleston, and Savannah. We visited 3 baseball
parks and completed our tour of 30 Major League Baseball Stadiums. I bought pins in each stadium and now need to
find a way to display them. We had a hot dog in each park. I am happy to report that Dodger Dogs are the best.
Kathleen, Pablo, Samantha and Matthew joined us for a Disney Cruise to Alaska. We started with a few days in Vancouver. The grand kids loved every minute.

Legislative Update Marilyn Russell Bittle,

Felice Strauss
Dear Friend,
While we made huge progress on the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) at the beginning of the summer, we still have a
ways to go. Our students still started this school year under the broken system
of No Child Left Behind
And unfortunately right now, ultra right-wing conservatives in Congress are
threatening to shut down the government rather than focus on our students.
Will you tell your representative to finish ESEA reauthorization now? Everyone
agrees that our students need a better law.

They are still living under the broken system of test and punish, and they are
waiting for Congress to do its job. Students cant afford for Congress to waste
more time bickering over a government shutdown when it needs to finish its
work on ESEA.
Will you please email your representative now?
Thanks to your advocacy, the House and Senate have both passed versions of a
new ESEA bill. The bipartisan Senate bill is a dramatic improvement over current law.
We must keep pushing Congress to negotiate a final version that looks closer to
the Senate bill. Our students are counting on Congress to provide more opportunity for all, regardless of zip code.
OCTOBER 13 POT LUCK

Going Green Tip

Eighty per cent of California's water is used in agriculture, and 25 % of that is used to
produce food that goes to waste.
Some ideas to better conserve:
1. Use fresh food first.

2. Have a use-it-up shelf or box in the refrigerator and choose a day to use the food in it-- "Fridge Friday".
3. Learn about expiration dates at www.stilltasty.com.
4. Double check your shopping cart before checkout to avoid buying more than you can use during the time
before your next shopping trip.

Family Matters cont.

Anne Medlen had a very busy and an amazing summer! She had company for most of July. Her
nephew and family spent the 4th of July and several days with her, Then her sister arrived for a week
followed by her niece for a couple of days. August arrived and Anne was glad to be taking her whole
family to Maui for rest and loads of fun! It was so nice to have the whole family together. I took
some of Mike's ashes with me so we could spread them in the water in Maui which was one of his favorite places to go.
Everyone had a wonderful time in a beautiful place. Many happy memories made on the trip with snorkeling with the turtles, a luau, family dinners together and sightseeing. There is nothing better that
family!

Merrily Spaziano had an eventful summer. Spent a lovely week on Hilton Head Island. Took side
trips to Daufuskie Island, Savannah and Charlston. The sights were beautiful and historical. Finally
got to eat Fried Green Tomatoes. Saw an old plantation, that was actually featured in the movie The
Notebook. Saw slave quarters, heard stories, enjoyed the sights and sounds of the south. Traveling
with my sister, Joan Ingram, and long time, high school, friend Marcia Stoddard.
