Co-Presidents Message
See you in September to quote an oldie but goodie. Summer has flown by once more and hopefully you have all been able to enjoy it and survived the extremely hot days. Now it is time to start the 2013-14 year with Alpha Rho. September 16th will be our annual Potluck kickoff to the year ~ getting together to reconnect. This is the time the retirees prepare the meal to support our sisters who are continuing to work in the classroom. Its always a special evening! Maureen Nicolo Jan Przybylski

Joys & Concerns:


Birth: Mary Carrs grandson, Dylan Patrick, was born on July 7th. Congratulations Mary and family!!! Concerns: We continue to keep our sisters and their family members who are ill in our thoughts. Julie Albertalli has started chemo treatments again. If you are aware of a joy or concern please let us know so that we can let other members know.

Retirees ~ We have
not received word so far that any of our Alpha Rho sisters have retired. If you know of someone who should be recognized, please contact us.

Chapter Dues

REMINDER: Annual dues are collected in the fall. They remain at $75. The state and international dues must be submitted by Oct. 15th so it is important to pay them as soon as possible. Please send a check payable to DKG Alpha Rho to: Julie Albertalli 3 Meadow Drive Big Flats, NY 14814 or you may pay at the September meeting.

Project Committee:
Plans are underway for a raffle at each meeting as a means to raise money for projects. Last year we raised $600 for the Dr. Margaret Locke Grant-inAid. Members also gave generously to the Arctic League at the Brunch in December.

Scholarship Committee:
This is a reminder to those still teaching to apply for the Lillian Shepardson Friendship Fund which provides $25 towards the purchase of instructional materials/resources to support student learning in your classroom. Look for information at our September meeting.

A special thanks to Cherie Bennett for doing the audit of our books again this summer. She does an outstanding job!

Program Committee:
Our committee has been working on the 2013-14 Programs. Attached are tentative programs with as much information as we have now. Please save the dates. Thank you to the Program Committee!

Membership Committee:
Members have prepared the papers for the vote on new members and are busy organizing the events associated with initiation of these members.

We will need some volunteers to make this a successful conference. Alpha Rho will be working on favors for the event. Please contact a member of the executive board if you have some ideas or can help. To register, see the attached form. We hope Alpha Rho is wellrepresented.

SCAS Fall Conference 2013 Watkins Glen Club Saturday, Oct 5, 2013, 9:30 am 1:00 pm Autism Spectrum Disorders: Are we ready REALLY ready? Speaker: Dr. Dawn Hamlin, Past-President of the New York State Council for Exceptional Children, Assistant Professor at SUNY Oneonta Dr. Hamlin teaches courses in Instructional Design, Applied Behavioral Analysis, Reading in Exceptional Education, and Adolescent Strategies. She has presented at regional, state, national and international conferences most of her work focuses on teacher training and evidence-based practices. Her articles have been published in the Journal of Behavioral Education and Topics in Early Childhood Special Education. Lunch: Thunder Road Pasta: Farfalle Pasta, sauted with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, red peppers, onions, and black olives. This will be accompanied with a tossed salad, Italian bread, and Chefs dessert du jour. Cost: $30.00 per person (please fill out a form for each guest) Directions to Watkins Glen: - From Albany and Oneonta: Rte. 88 West to Rte. 17(I-86) West to Rte. 14 North in Horseheads. 25 minutes from Horseheads. - From Utica and points East (scenic route): I-90 West to Rte. 81 South to Rte. 79 West (in Ithaca) to Rte. 414 South. 30 minutes from Ithaca. - From Binghamton, Scranton, New York City, and points South East: Rte. 17(I-86) West to Rte. 14 North in Horseheads. 25 Minutes from Horseheads. - From Syracuse, Auburn, Oswego: I-90 West to Rte. 14 South (Geneva exit 42). 40 minutes from Exit 42. Alpha Rho Meeting May 21, 2013 The meeting was called to order by co-president, Jan Przybilski at Woodbrook Assisted Living Facility. Julie Albertalli gave the treasurers report: Savings, $180.72; Checking, $36.62; Money Market, $$6324.54 - $400.00; 3 CDs, $5924.54, $15,536.19, $3,000; Lillian Shepardson Friendship Fund $1446.87. Lillian provided this in her will. Sue Coolican explained the change in the by-laws which provides the president with her pin at her installation rather than the end of her term. Membership voted to accept this change. The Education Foundation grant to purchase books for Picnic in the Park was submitted. Members were encouraged to join the Education Foundation. Sue Coolican explained the Bee Small Award through which we were awarded $400 to purchase books for Traveling Books. Sue Coolican announced the South Central DKG Conference, October 5 from 10 2 at the Glenn Club. The keynote speaker is from Oneota and will speak on Autism. Alpha Rho will provide the favors. Anyone who has suggestions should talk with Sue. Mimi Heher suggested bubbles or fidgit bags. Margaret Locke asked if the first Saturday in December had been secured at the country club and Pam Mathes confirmed that it has. The North East Regional DKG Conference will be July 25. Contact Erin Merrill with your reservation for lunch. Membership applications are due to the Membership Committee by June 1. Raffles by the Membership Committee and Projects Committee were conducted. The membership then went to the dining room for delicious desserts and conversation.
