Mary

Member Spotlight Mary Milner is recently retired after 39 years of teaching. After spending 25 years in first grade, including 15 years in first grade reading recovery, she can safely state that first grade is never boring! Now that she is retired, she can enjoy such varied hobbies as reading, cooking, sewing, gardening, and scrapbooking. She enjoys traveling to Europe either with her daughter Carly or husband of 44 years, Jim, along with playing the piano and learning new things. Her favorite vacation destination is London or Paris. She loves chocolate and Mexican food and delights in making chicken enchiladas with cream cheese. A big dislike is being allergic to dairy!! She enjoys her two cats, named Louie and Sweetie Pie. A favorite movie is Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightley. Her one desire is to be a positive inspiration to someone. Her sister is the one person she most admires. When she was a freshman in college, she wanted to be an art history major but her mother said she had to major in education so she could get a job upon graduation. After 39 productive years in the classroom, it sounds as though her mother gave good advice. Presidents Message We hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We cant wait to see all of you this Saturday. Our meeting is called Holiday Happiness, so get ready for fun, great food, and lots of hugs. (A hug is a perfect gift: one size fits all and its easy to exchange.) Since we havent met for 2 months, we will also conduct a little business. Please respond to the evite, so the hostesses will know how much food to prepare. If you called any former members who responded with maybe during Annie Calling, this is a great meeting to invite them to attend. DKG is the gift we give ourselves. Please join us and give yourself the gift of fellowship and relaxation! Julie and Shirl Member News Mary Milner: Jim and I spent 2 weeks in the UK in October. First we flew into London and caught a flight to Edinburgh. We spent a day and a half sightseeing in Edinburgh, including touring Edinburgh Castle which is amazing! Then we rented a car and drove from Edinburgh across the Scottish Highlands to the western coast. We drove to the Isle of Skye, where we spent several days. Then we drove a different route through the Highlands back to Edinburgh. We took the train to London where we rented a car and drove to Oxford. While there, we went to Stonehenge and Blenheim palace, and we walked around in "old" Oxford. Then we went back to London for several days. It was an awesome trip! Amanda Castro and her teammates from Schiff Elementary captured third place in the Literacy Council of Fort Bend s annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee. Congratulations! Shirl Hawes: Hawseys birth mom and sister spent the week here at Thanksgiving. We ate too much food, went bowling, made cards, and kept warm in front of the fireplace. I will be teaching a Zentangle course every Tuesday starting in January for Katy Community Education, so I am busy getting ready for class!
