As kids we played Follow the Leader, but there were two variations.

The first was an obstacle course laid out by the

leader—over, under around, and through assorted barriers. The second, harder version included mimicking the routine of the
leader while tackling the obstacles.
Follow Your Neighbor is more like the latter. The original call was from a box formation. In-facing dancers make a 270
degree arm turn (3/4). Out-facing dancers mimic their neighbor, the person they were just holding hands with, and make a 270
degree turn. Some callers teach the call by having the outfacing dancers make an air arm turn or an arm turn with a phantom
dancer to illustrate the concept of follow.
The origins of Follow Your Neighbor are murky at best. The definition of the call implies that the other person in a
miniwave is your neighbor. Of the forty-some Neighbor calls listed in Burleson’s Encyclopedia, only a few reinforce that
definition. This implies that Neighbor was a regional usage, along with partner, corner, left-hand lady, and so on.
The more recent Neighbor calls (the higher numbers) all include someone making a 270 degree arm turn. Nearly half of
them, however, are complex calls (two or more calls stacked into one) which include Follow Your Neighbor along with another
call (often, you can guess from the title).
