Dear Mr. Rich:

This is in response to your letter of February 7, 2002, regarding the optimum penstock
diameter for the Trout Lake hydropower facility. I have reviewed the proposed layout, and
determined the head losses and cost of various intake-penstock system alternatives.

My calculations on the intake-penstock system, assuming a 150 cfs total design

discharge, 85 percent plant efficiency, and $4000/kW value of power, indicate that a ___ ft.
diameter penstock above the bifurcation, and a ___ ft. diameter for the penstocks below the
bifurcation would be the most cost effective. My estimated construction cost for the intake-
penstock system included the costs of ________, ________, ________............... . The total
estimated construction cost is $________. The head losses of this system up to the powerhouse
are estimated to be ______ ft. at the 150 cfs design discharge for each turbine.

I have attached my calculations and tables for your review. Please call if you have any
questions or require further information.

Sincerely,

Kim Smith
