Rakhine Trip of NLD leaders


01 August
A team of NLD leaders led by U Ohn Kyaing composing U Aung Myint (Phyapon Ni Lone Oo),
Ko Ba Maung (Youth leader) and Ko Aye Min Soe (Youth leader from Rangoon Division) and
U Tin Thein Aung (Rakhine Organizational Committee) went to Rakhine State. The team
explained the stance of NLD and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi regarding NLD’s decisions and
upcoming elections. In Gwa Township, they met with about 40 members at the house of U Sein
Kyaw (Chairman of the Gwa Township Organizational Committee).

04 August
The team continued their trip to Thandwe on 4th August and met with members of Township
organizational committee, youth and women wings. The team also discussed about political
prisoners in Thandwe prison and the way they are helping those in this prison.

05 August
They continued to Toungup on the same day. They met with NLD members at the house of U
Tin Thein Aung, Chairman of the Township NLD. Some local authorities watched their meeting
but did not harass them. The team also visited U Kyaw Khaing and U Min Aung who are
political prisoners in Toungup prison.

06 August
The next day they continued their visit to other families of political prisoners in Toungup,
including family members of U Khin Hla, Ko Moe Naing Soe, Ma Ni Ni May Myint, Ko Chit
Maung Maung, Ko Maung Maung Thet and Ko San Lwin.

07 August
NLD team went to Sittwe and met with organizational committee members and NLD members
and at night time, visited families of political prisoners such as Ko Tun Linn Kyaw, Ko Zaw Tun
Naing, Ko Kyaw Win, Naing Soe (a) Me Lone.

05 August
Taryar Min Wai’s memorial
NLD leaders including U Tin Oo, U Win Tin, Daw May Win Myint and youth members attended
the 3rd ceremony of the demise of well-known poet and writer ‘Taryar Min Wai’ who used to be
a 88 generation student leader in 1988. The ceremony was held at quarter no. (42) in North
Dagon Township, Rangoon.

02 August
NLD youth member beaten in prison
Ko Htay Aung, a member of NLD youth from Thaketa Township was beaten by prison wardens
at Insein Prison. He has not been sentenced but under trial in Thaketa and Kyautada Township
Court with charges of contacts with unlawful associations and State Protection Law. He was also
tortured during the interrogation before he was sent to the prison.

03 August
NLD members in prison not in good health
Ko Myo Khin, a youth leader from Yankin Township was suffering from heart disease and eyes
problem in Myikyeena Prison which is located in northern part of Burma quite far away from
Rangoon where his family lives. Ko Myo Khin was sentenced four years for participating in
protests against sudden rise of fuel price on 23rd August, 2007, just before Saffron revolution.

03 August
NLD leaders’ visit to family members of political prisoners
NLD leaders led by U Tin Oo, Vice Chair and U Win Tin visited families of political prisoners
of ethnic leaders. They met with family members of Khun Tun Oo, U Pu Cin Siang Thang and U
Kyaw Min who are members of Committee Representing People’s Parliament and U Sai Nyunt
Lwin, secretary of Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, Sai Hla Aung and Major General
Hso Ten, Chairman of Shan State Peace Council and Ko Tin Tun Aung, Rakhine youth member
at the residence Khun Tun Oo.

NLD leaders encouraged family members of ethnic leaders and explained NLD’s positions and
activities. The team also visited Ko Paw Lwin’s family in Mayangone Township.

04 August
NLD leaders met British Ambassador
British Ambassador Mr. Andrew Heyn and his secretary came to
the residence of U Tin Oo and met with leaders of NLD such as
U Tin Oo, U Win Tin and U Nyan Win. The Ambassador gave
the message of the Prime Minister that he would continue the
support to democratic struggle of the NLD and democratic
forces. He also handed the 120 pages of birthday messages for
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to NLD leaders, which were posted by
well-wishers on the British Foreign Ministry’s Burma Facebook
page. Mr. Jeremy Brown, British Foreign minister gave them to Mr. Andy Heyn on 8th July to
hand them to Daw Suu’s representative.

05 August
NLD leaders’ trip to Pegu Division
NLD team led by U Nyan Win went to Letpadan Township and met with members of NLD in
Pegu Division at the residence of U Nyunt Aye, Member of Parliament elect for Letpadan
Township. About 70 members and leaders of NLD from Thayarwady, Letpadan, Monyo,
Minhla, Okpho, Gyobingauk, Nattalin and Zigon Townships from Pegu Division. They
discussed about current positions of NLD, the situation of NLD Townships and their activities.

06 August
CRPP meeting held
CRPP members met at U Tin Oo’s house and discussed about elections especially on how to
educate people regarding elections and political situation. U Tin Oo, U Win Tin, U Than Tun, U
Nyunt Wai, U Hla Pe, U Thein Pe, U Soe Win, U Pu Cin Chin Ten, U Aye Thar Aung, Htaung
Ko Tan attended the meeting and decided to release clear position of CRPP only when it gets
close to the election date.

07 August
NLD leaders’ visit to family members of political prisoners
NLD team led by U Tin Oo and U Win Tin paid a visit to family member of U Kyaw San,
political prisoner and current central committee member.

07 August
NLD youths’ Book review discussion
Regular book review discussion of youth members was made at Thanlyan Township in
commemoration of 22nd anniversary of four eights democracy movement.

08 August
Four eights movement commemoration ceremony
In North Okkalapa township at U Aye Kyi’s house, four eights movement commemoration
ceremony was held and some memorials were shared by those with four eights movement
experience. Book review discussion was made in Daw May Hnin Kyi’s house in commemoration
of four eight movement. U Tin Oo and U Win Tin attended the discussion. There were other
commemoration ceremonies across the country at Mandalay, Pegu, Sagaing and Magwe
Divisions, organized by NLD members. NLD leaders and members also attended the ceremony
organized by 88 generation students’ leaders at Shin Ardissavunsa monastery at Mingalar
Taungnyunt Township.

10 August
NLD leaders’ visit to family members of political prisoners
NLD leaders visited political prisoners’ families including Ko Htin Kyaw’s and others. Most of
the families of political prisoners could not go and visit their beloved ones due to financial
constraints.

11 August
Lawyers met with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
U Nyan Win and Daw Khin Htay Kywe, lawyers of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi met with her at her
residence. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said that rule of law in Burma is very weak and without rule
of law, no country can be properly developed. Rule of law is not for one party or one person but
for every single organization and people, with or without power. Daw Suu also asked her NLD
members to explain how important the rule of law is to people when they travel across the
country as everybody is responsible to know what is true or what is not true and stand against it.

Lawyers also discussed about the lawsuit against the SPDC regarding the legal existence of the
NLD. The NLD cannot be implied with the law that provides that any existing political parties
that do not register again will be automatically deregistered in legal terms. The NLD has to wait
60 days after it has sent the notice for lawsuit. NLD lawyers have already drafted the file but
have to discuss with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for more details. They also discussed about the
special appeal for her present sentence which is completed one year that day.

13 August
NLD youth member released
Ko Tin Ko, an NLD member from Meikhtilar was released from Ohbo prison, Mandalay after
serving two years sentence due to his participation in September 2007 movement.

14 August
NLD leaders’ visit to family members of political prisoners
NLD leaders led by U Tin Oo and U Win Tin together with NLD youths visited 14 family
members of political prisoners. In the morning, they visited U Hla Thein’ house and met with
family members of Ko Kyi Lwin, Ko Nay Kyaw and Ko Kyaw Myo Naing. Then they went to
Thaketa Twonship and met with family members of Ma Cho, Ko Htay Aung, U Khin Tun, U
Aung Myint and U Wai Soe. Their group also met with family members of U Soe Myint, Ko

Thet Naing Aung, Ko Kyaw Myint Oo, Ko Win Aung, Ko Kyaw Win, Ko Zaw Minn Htut and U
Kyi Aung who are not NLD members.

15 August
NLD youths’ visit to senior leaders
NLD youths paid a visit to senior leaders and Central Executive Committee members, ‘U Aung
Shwe’ and ‘U Lun Tin’ who are not in good health, at their respective housese. They encouraged
the leaders and listened to their admonishment.

16 August
NLD team composing U Nyan Win, Daw May Win Myint, U Han Thar Myint, U Hla Min and U
Aung Soe went to Kaw Thaung, Tanintharyi Division. About 50 members of NLD came and
fetched them up at the air port. They met with NLD members at the NLD office of Kaw Thaung
Township. The next day, the team went round the Kaw Thaung Township and met with NLD
members and ordinary people in some villages.

19 August
NLD team went to Myeik by flight and with two trucks load of NLD members and 20
motorcycles greeted them at the air port. They met with about 70 NLD members at Myeik office.
They had to answer a lot of questions raised by the local NLD members around the township.

23 August
NLD team went to Dawei and met with NLD members, youth and women from Dawei,
Thayetchaung, Launglon Townships. They discussed a lot of issues related to NLD’s decision
and positions and current political situation.

17 August
NLD leaders’ visit to family members of political prisoners
NLD leaders including U Tin Oo and U Win Tin paid a visit to political prisoners’ families in
Hlaingtharyar Township. They went to Hlaingtharyar office at first and met with family
members of Ko Thein Swe, Ma Yin Yin Wine, Ko Myo Thant and Ko Sein Joe. Then the team
visited Daw Khin Yi’s house and met with family members of human rights defenders’ families
and lastly met with family members of NLD members at U Maung Sein’s house. Ko Myo Kyaw
Zin, U Maung Sein’s son is now in Khamti prison.

17 August
Municipal officers inspect house repair
A team led by an officer from Municipal inspected the repair work of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s
house. U Khun Thar Myint supervised the repair work and now has completed the work as
applied to the Municipal. But there are some more works to repair windows and staircase for her
security. The windows need to be covered with wrought iron for security reason. And the
municipal has not permitted yet to destroy a dilapidated wooden house in her compound.

19 August
NLD leaders attended U Kyi Maung memorial ceremony
NLD leaders and members commemorate the 6th anniversary of the demise of U Kyi Maung, late
CEC member of the NLD at the care center for people living with HIV/AIDS in South Dagon.

19 August
NLD decides to boycott the elections
NLD made a decision at its Central Executive Committee’s meeting to boycott the elections.
NLD declared through some interviews with media that it boycotted the elections because it does
not believe that the 2008 constitution and electoral laws do not conform to the democracy and
people have right not to vote according to the electoral rights.

20 August
NLD youth member in bad health
Ko Myo Min Wai’s health condition is not good as he is suffering from Hemorrhoids in Khamtee
prison, Sagaing Division. The prison authorities do not allow him to be hospitalized although he
can no longer eat anything. U Nyi Pu, NLD MP elect is also paralyzed in Khamtee prison
without proper medical treatment or medication.

20 August
NLD leaders’ visit to family members of political prisoners
NLD leaders led by U Tin Oo and U Win Tin together with youth and women wing members
paid a visit to Su Sun Nway’s family in Kawhmu Township at U Myint Thein’s house for
encouragement. They also visited family of Ko Wai Lwin who is a political prisoner at U Hla
Aye’s house in Kungyangone Township.

22 August
NLD leaders attended U Shwe Ohn’s funeral
NLD leaders attended the funeral ceremony of U Shwe Ohn, veteran politician and a patron of
Union Democracy Party. He was a Shan ethnic leader and got involved in politics in his life
time.

22 August
NLD youths’ visit to senior leaders
NLD youths paid homage to sick member of Central Executive Committee of the NLD ‘U Lwin’
at his residence and encouraged him.

NLD youths’ visit to senior leaders
NLD youths paid homage to a veteran politician called ‘Thakin Thein Maung’ at his residence.
Veteran politicians are a group that is still active in Burma’s politics by urging the present junta
to bring about national reconciliation to Burma.

23 August
NLD leaders met
NLD leaders met at U Tin Oo’s residence to discuss about assistance for political prisoners and
visit to families of political prisoners.

23 August
NLD members donate for political prisoners
NLD members in Bogalay Township donated 7,500 kyat for each of 10 political prisoners from
Bogalay. They also paid visits to houses of political prisoners and encouraged their family
members including Ko Aung Zaw Oo who is in Butheetaung prison, Ko Nay Linn Aung in
Kalay prison, Ko Nay Win Soe in Khamhtee prison, Ko Htay Maung Maung Soe in Kyauk Phyu
prison, Ko Myat Linn Tun in Lashao prison, Ko Thiha Aung in Loikaw prison, Ko Thiha
Thantzin in Myitkyeena prison, Ko Htin Aung in Namtuu prison, Ko Pye Phyo Hlaing in Sittwe
prison and Ko Thein Zaw in Keng Teng prison.

24 August
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi asked members to watch elections
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi met with U Nyan Win, U Kyi Win and Daw Khin Htay Kywe, her
lawyers at her residence. Daw Suu said that she agreed with the NLD’s decision to boycott the
elections but the NLD should not ignore them and watch them closely even though people knows
that electoral laws are not fair and just. Daw Suu said that people need to monitor the polls to
know whether the junta follows its own laws. Daw Suu also responded the questions of people
who only wanted to vote for the NLD that people should stay away from the vote.

She also said that the elections date is set without giving enough time for political parties so it is
an insult to people; without freedom of expression and freedom of information, she said elections
cannot be fair ones. And the government that will come out of this election will not be
accountable to the parliament but to the president according to the constitution. People should be

educated about constitution and electoral laws; without this knowledge, voting is meaningless.
During the meeting, they also discussed about legal cases regarding her house repair works and
her special leave to appeal against the sentence as granted by the Rangoon High Court.

24 August
NLD leaders’ visit to family members of political prisoners
NLD team led by U Tin Oo and U Win Tin paid a visit to family members of political prisoners
including Ko Zaw Thet Htwe, U Ohn Than and Ko Kyaw Ko Ko, Ko Hkaing Myo, Ko Myo Min
Hteik, Ko Soe Moe Tun, Ko Zeya, Ko Sithu Zeya, Ko Min Han, Ko Tun Myint, Ko Aung Aung
Oo, Ko Kyaw Min Tun, U Ba Tint and U Soe Oak at Bahan and Tamwe Townships. They met
with family members separately at two different places in Bahan and Tamwe Townships.

25 August
NLD’s press conference
A press conference was made by U Nyan Win, lawyer of
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at the headquarters of the NLD in
the afternoon. U Nyan Win explained what Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi told to people and NLD members including her
views on the upcoming elections and responsibilities of
people and NLD members.

25 August
NLD Township members met
Leaders of NLD from four Townships in Mandalay Division met at Meikhtilar and supported the
decision of NLD to boycott the upcoming elections. About 30 NLD leaders from Meikhtila,
Tharse, Wundwin and Mahlaing Townships met at Daw Myint Myint Aye’s house in Meikhtilar
and discussed about NLD’s decision and positions.

28 August
NLD leaders’ trip to Irrawaddy Division
NLD team led by U Tin Oo, U Hla Pe and U Win Myint went to Pathein, Irrawaddy Division for
organizational purpose. They met with NLD members, youth and women wing members at the
house of U Hla Phone Kyaw. They stopped their trip at Kyone Pyaw, near Pathein. They met
with about 150 NLD members from Kyone Pyaw, Yaykyi, Kyaungkone, Athote at the house of
U Tin, Chairman of Kyone Pyaw Township NLD.

On 29th, the team continued their trip to Pantanaw and met with about 100 NLD members at the
house of Dr. Tin Min Tut, NLD MP Elect. The next day, the team went to MaU-bin and met with
NLD members in the morning. Then they continued their trip to Kyaiklat and Pyapon. They
continued to Bogalay on 31st and met with NLD members at the house of U Aung Khin Po. They
explained Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s message to NLD members and people recently released
through U Nyan Win, her lawyer.

They arrived at Dedaye in the afternoon of that same day and met with NLD members and
youths. The meeting ceased at 4 o’clock and went back to Rangoon at night.

29 August
NLD youths’ visit to senior leaders
NLD youth members paid homage to veteran politician Thakhin Thein Pe and Thakhin Chan
Tun at their residence.

30 August
NLD leaders’ trip to Pegu Division
NLD CEC members such as U Nyan Win, U Nyunt Wai, U Soe Win, Daw Khin Nyunt Mu and
Ko Kyaw Win met with about 80 NLD members at the house of U Aung Soe Myint, MP elect of
Taungoo Township. NLD leaders and members from Taungoo, Oktwin, Yedashe and Phyu
Townships attended the meeting. NLD members actively discussed about the NLD’s decisions
and positions as well as current situations in their respective areas in Pegu Division. NLD leaders
asserted the legal existence of the NLD.
