In- the –Round or
3-Dimensional
by Auguste Rodin
Rodin said of his work, "What makes my
Thinker think is that he thinks
not only with his brain,
with his knitted brow,
his distended nostrils and compressed lips,
but with every muscle of his arms, back and
legs, with his clenched fist and gripping toes.
" The Thinker was originally conceived as the
central figure for the monumental "Gates of
Hell," a commission Rodin never completed.

The piece gained its current title when it was

exhibited in Paris in 1899.
The Cleveland Museum of Art --- Gift of
Alexandre P. Rodenberg
This is the last of Michelangelo's projects
for the tomb which Pope Julius
commissioned in 1506. The pope wanted
his monument to be exemplary and
Michelangelo planned a burial chamber
that would be a truly architectonic
structure, with statues of the old and new
testament figures at different levels.

The statue of Moses was sculpted during

the years when Michelangelo was painting
the Sistine Chapel. You see Moses as he
glares irately at the Jews after coming
down from Mt. Sinai with the Tables of
the Law. The extraordinary force of this
figure, the tension in the veins and
muscles, the posture and the furious
expression, have rightly made this Moses
one of the most admired masterpieces of
all

various human
achievements and triumphs.
AS PART OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

throughout history, sculpture has

been closely associated with
architecture partly because
similar materials and skills are used
in both fields.
