INTRODUCTION

BRIEF HISTORY

Represent God and Kings


Christians decorated church with saints and Demons.
Greeks made statues perfectly depicted formed.
In 15th Century Monument built in streets in Italy.
In 20th Century Monument of song writers built in heart of New York
City.
Fountain with angles center in common place.
The participants of World War II also used statues to honor their
soldiers.
Sculpture may be the oldest of the arts.
They painted or designed dwellings. Carved on the rock or scratch in
earth.

SCULPTURE – comes from Latin word “sculpere” meaning to carve. It refers to


the creation of three dimensional figures, forms designs from a single
block mass of materials.

TWO MAJOR SCULPTURAL PROCESSES:

1. Subtractive - unwanted materials is cut away.


2. Additive - construction of figure by putting together.
SCULPTURAL TECHNIQUES

Sculpture is created in four basic ways:

Carving (Subtractive process) material is removed. Mainly wood and


stone or marbles
Modelling (Additive process) materials is added to build up a shape.
Clay, wax, plaster, etc.
Casting a mold is used to form molten bronze or other material into a
desired shape. Often used for jewellery or small sculpture.
Construction (Additive process) welding, gluing, nailing materials
together.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIALS USE IN SCULPTURE

1. STONE – hard and durable, weather and fire resistant, but heavy and
durable.
Basalt and Diorite

Granite
Limestone
2. WOOD – lighter, softer, and cheaper, and easy to cut.
3. TERRA COTTA – or baked earth is made by firing clay as in pottery
making.
4. BRONZE – is solid and too expensive. The difficult process of casting
bronze is one of its disadvantages.

KINDS OF SCULPTURE

RELIEF - Attached to a surface or a back ground.


FREE-STUNDING OR FULL-ROUND – Free standing sculpture that can
be seen from all sides.
KINETIC OR MOBILE – Kinetic sculpture is art that contains movable
parts in the design.

March 6, 1475 – February 18, 1564

He is an Italian Sculptor, also known as “Renaissance man” or “Universal


Genius” who excelled in various fields including Painting, Architecture,
Poetry, and Engineering.
Regarded as “The Greatest Sculpture of all time”.

AUGUSTE RODIN

November 12, 1840 – November 17, 1917

He is widely considered as the “Father of Modern Sculpture” and


recognized as the “Greatest Artist of the Era”.
His work The Thinker is one of the most famous sculptures ever created.

He is a Spanish Sculptor.
He is regarded as the most influential artist of the 20th Century.
Also known as “Renowned Sculptor”.
