Motivations, aspirations, creativity

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Between Stateline Road and the 18th St. Expressway there are hundreds of children who aren't motivated, who
aren't inspired, and who don't dream. Within the Rosedale community, there is a large disconnect in the
fundamentals of educating creativity and boosting the imagination of children.

This unique opportunity for improvement presents the question - How can graphic design produce a creative
outlet and a safe channel for career ambitions and personal aspiration for young kids.

According to the Library Junction public school initiative and the Reading is Fundamental association, 'reading'
is a fundamental and key developmental tool to building a child's character and self-confidence through the
imagination and other creative channels.

Libraries are one of our greatest academic resources for reading. They offer a full pantry of books, magazines,
articles, and novels which provides a safe haven for harvesting creativity and character development.
Thursday, September 16, 2010

From gathered research, we've realized that Rosedale is missing a centralized public library or library system. We
emphasize the word 'system' because the lack of circulation within the community is greatly needed. Although
the nearby area of Argentine provides its community with a very established and reputable library, the accessibility
for Rosedale residents to benefit, from that literary source of creative and academic knowledge, is hard to come
by.

However, the current community has made great lengths to providing small academic resources and libraries,
that include a limited reserve of books and computers, through public housing programs and local schools .

in addition to these schools, multiple churches such as:

The Rosedale Congregational Church, and The Rainbow Mennonite Church offer everything they have as far as
reading materials to community members.
Thursday, September 16, 2010

A concern that has surfaced with all these resources is the distance and the static nature of where they stay.
Through graphic design we want to change this static social behavior by creating a circulation and exchange
system where children in middle schools, elementary schools, and church goers can share their own academic
resources and supply other literary hubs with new content to enrich, engage, inform, and delight.
Thursday, September 16, 2010

We are trying to reach children, primarily students in the 2nd through 6th grade levels, by fulling the needs of
why they need a literary form of exchange. Children from high-needs schools suffer most, including those from
low-income neighborhoods, immigrant or non-English-speaking families.

From a survey conducted by the Kansas public school system, the cluster schools within the Rosedale
community have had a decrease...

however... they have wonderfully had an estimated increase in literacy of nearly 25-30% between 2006-2009.

This shows that the "can do" abilities are there, what we need now is the "can do" motivation to start fueling our
intellectual and creative reservoirs. After all literaturesʼ purpose is to replace an empty mind... with an open one.

We will measure the effectiveness of this proposed circulatory and exchange system through the board of
