Cultural Relativism
Cultural Relativism

-refers to the practices considered


immoral or taboo to a certain groups of
people, yet moral to other societies.

-is the principle that an individual


human’s beliefs and activities should
be understood in terms of his or her
own culture.
William Graham Sunner (1840-1910)

-one of the first Americans to teach sociology in


major University (yale).

-he published “falkways” in 1906 which sought to


describe the origin of social norms.
Sunner’s Classified Norm’s into 3 major
types:

1. Folkways
-are relatively weak norms which are only mildly
enforced an a society ( not against law).

2. Laws
-are norms which are designed, maintained and
enforced by the political authority of a society.
3. Mores

-are the strong and important norms of society.

-violation of mores will evoke severe punishment


(against the law most of the time).

-occurs when folkways become compulsive for the


welfare of the society and it has acquired moral
significance.

-the Greek term equivalent to Latin mores is “ethos”.


Sub-culture

-refers the attitude of a certain group to


deviate the habitual practices of the
majority.

-is a group of people with a culture


(whether distinct or hidden) which
differentiates them from the larger
culture to which they belong.
