On Feb 23. The Radford University women’s basketball team
presented to fans exactly what they were made of as they
overcame Campbell in a close victory in the electrifying Dedmon
center. The hard-fought victory tied a program-record with the
ladies winning their 11th straight game! The Highlanders now
sit at a 19-6 overall record and a distinguished 13-1 record ...

A
t Radford University,
students frequently
face fines for parking
violations. The university
upholds several parking rules
and enforces them with fines
and, in extreme cases, tire boots
and towing.
According to Radford’s
Parking Regulations, the
university imposes these rules to
“promote the orderly conduct of
university business; effectively
utilize parking space within the
limits available and to reduce
congestion ....” However, some
students feel the rules are unfair.
Sarah Karim, a Psychology
major, feels the rules are far
too restrictive and end up
suppressing student use of
vehicles.
“My roommate has a car, but
she can’t even use it,” Karim
says. “She has to worry about
parking.”

Additionally, Karim believes
these regulations lead to there
being not enough spots on
campus for students.
Some campus lots are
restricted for faculty during
certain hours and then open for
students after hours.
A car caught in a restricted
lot faces a $30 fine. Other
fines included but aren’t
limited to: “Overtime parking
meter” - $30, “Failure to
Properly Display Permit” - $30,
“Improper Parking” - $30, and
“Unauthorized Use of Permit” -
$100.
Radford enforces these rules
24/7. The university has every
right to enforce these rules, but
Karim believes they come with
some harsh financial drawbacks
for students.
“Their college students,
getting tickets makes it
extremely stressful financially,”
Karim says.
Sure, a single $30 citation
may not be so bad. However,
those tickets can pile up, and
they do. If caught with too
many unpaid fines, a car faces
immobilization – the dreaded
boot.
The parking regulations
specify that an account with
$125 or more in unpaid parking
violations is an offense worthy
of immobilization. Booted cars
that linger in lots for five days
will be towed at the owner’s
expense.
Students aren’t all against
using boots. Luke Blackiston,
Criminal Justice major, thinks
“booting makes sense.”
“It gives [students] time to
pay a lesser fee instead of just
straight towing them,” he says.
According to Donna Alley,
Radford’s Parking Services
Manager, 12 cars were booted so
far this year which have been due
to unpaid parking violations.
Students unable to pay
parking citations could be caught
in a bad trap. After 72 hours, an
unpaid ticket will show up as
a hold on a student’s account

7 Inexpensive Ways To Spend Spring Break

S
pring Break is almost here!
After being stuck in
the rain and cold this
last month, you’re probably
dreaming of warm, sunny
weather.
However, traveling to places
with such a climate can put a
dent in your bank account. So,
while the weather may not feel
very spring-like, there are still a
ton of fun things to do right here
in Virginia that can make your
break feel a little brighter.
Go on a Road Trip
From cities to the
countryside, to the coastline,
Virginia has a lot to offer. One
of the best and cheapest ways to
see it all is by taking a road trip.
You could drive from city
to city, or start in one of the
corners and complete a triangle
around the state. If friends come
along, they could pitch in for gas
to reduce the cost.
Play in the Parks
Virginia is filled with parks.
There are 40 State Parks, and 22
National Parks throughout the
state which all of them different
from the next.
Claytor Lake and Grayson
Highlands State Parks are two of
my personal favorites, and both
are relatively close to Radford.
The National Parks are even
more amazing.
There’s Shenandoah
National Park, which has over
500 miles of hiking trails.
Although, if hiking isn’t your
thing, the park can be enjoyed
from the seat of your car,
105 miles of slow scenic road
through the beautiful Blue Ridge
Mountains.
Shenandoah’s most popular
hike is Old Rag Mountain.
I’ve hiked Old Rag at least
five times now, and never get
tired of it. Most of the hike is a
gradual incline, but about a half
mile from the top, there is a rock
scramble. Boulders the size of
buildings will surround you as
you have to use all four limbs to
get up the mountain.
Once at the top, you can relax
and take in the breathtaking
views that the Shenandoah
Mountains have to offer - I
guarantee your mind will be
blown by this hike.
Another one of my favorites
is Great Falls National Park. It’s
only a twenty-minute drive from
my home in Northern Virginia.
So, during breaks, I spend a ton
of time there hiking, climbing
rocks, and just sitting out in the
sun if it’s a beautiful day.
Explore Cities
Cities can be a great place
to experience a lot in a short
amount of time. Some of
Virginia’s most popular cities to
explore are Richmond, Roanoke,
and Virginia Beach. Each offers
different unique culture and
attractions. Of course, there is
also Washington D.C. bordering
Virginia.
D.C. can be a great place
to explore inexpensively.
Admission to all the Smithsonian
Museums and the National Zoo
is free. Also, Metro passes are
reasonably inexpensive and can
be used to go anywhere in the
city.
Visit Other College
Campuses
Something I enjoy doing is
visiting other college campuses
to see what they look like, and
how they are organized.
If it’s a public college, and
they aren’t on a break as well,
you could pretend to be a student
for a day by eating at the dining
halls and studying at the library.
It can give you a new perspective
on what college is like for other
students.
See Wacky Attractions
If you’re looking for
something out of the norm,
Culture
Virginia has plenty of weird
and unusual attractions
scattered around the state. One
attraction is Foamhenge, a full-
scale replica of Stonehenge in
England, but made out of foam.
There is also Dinosaur Land
which is a park that consists of
more than 50 life-size dinosaurs
made from fiberglass.
Work
If all of these options sound
out of your budget, then you
may want to make some money. Shenandoah National Park.
If you already have a job,
you could just go back and
work there. Alternatively, you
could get creative and make
money by selling items on
eBay or Craigslist, babysitting,
dog walking, or work for food
delivery apps like Ubereats,
GrubHub, and Doordash.
Stay at Home
Sometimes you need time
to do nothing. If you don’t feel
like going out stay at home and
relax. There are plenty of things
you can do around your house: Shenandoah National Park (2).
read, write, meditate, watch TV,
pick up a new hobby, work out,
cook, or spend time with your
family.
You could also take walks
around your hometown. Things
may look a little different after
being away for a while; you may
even notice things you never
noticed before.
Whatever you chose to
do this spring break, enjoy it,
reflect on your hard work, and
prepare yourself to come back
even stronger for the rest of the
semester.

2019 Etiquette Dinner: Getting to Know Proper Etiquette

ust before spring break, the
university will be hosting
an etiquette dinner giving
students the opportunity to find
out what the business world has
in store for them.
The etiquette dinner will be
held in Kyle Hall 340, Tuesday,
Mar. 5 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Those
in attendance will be treated to
a free four-course meal. Dining
options are listed below and
any requests regard dietary
restrictions will be taken.
Menu:
• A Salad with Romaine
Zesty Caesar dressing
flaked with parmesan
cheese and herb
croutons.
• Soup with Butternut
Squash with toasted
sunflower seeds served
with a roll.
Smash Bros Tournament - a Smashing Success

tournament Feb. 16. for a grand
cash prize.
40 plus people from Dublin,

gathered for pizza and casual
matches in the earlier part of
the day till 5 p.m.
Then from 10:30 p.m.
the tournaments went on for
Super Smash Bros. Melee,
and the newly released Super
Smash Bros. Ultimate, with
the tournament fee being split
between the top three winners
as the grand prize.
The rules for the tournament
were Genesis 6 rules, meaning
that each player starts with
three lives per match, best 2 out
of 3 games wins.
Losers of the first round
of the match were sent to
the loser bracket. While the
winners would be competing in
the winner bracket, the winner
of the winner bracket and the
winner of the loser bracket
would then compete for the
number one spot.
The competition was fierce,
with players of all ages who

event is Kathleen Harshberger,
a graduate from The Protocol
School of Washington, who
specializes in training for
professional business etiquette.

played, they gave each other

better ways.

battle, Angelo Cline came out
on top as he excitedly took the
win and the money for the grand
prize.
This type of event is what
brings the community together
no matter where you’re from
or how old you are. It gives
gamers of all kinds something in
common to share and talk about.
Speaking with Yamine,
he talked about earning his
degree at Virginia Tech, and
previously owning a game store
in Roanoke, plus working at
the Tech Exchange, which is
another game store in Roanoke
as well before finally starting
his business in Radford. He said
this tournament was even bigger
than the last one.

Saturday, Mar. 30 at 11 a.m. with

ways to seek professional
guidance every year, and this
event has taken place before.
Other events in the past such as
career fairs or COMS Week have
offered resources to students of
any major on how to get a better
head start for their professional
lives.

idterms are a stressful
time for students
because professors are
testing students on everything
they have learned so far. Simply
hearing the word “midterm”
can send the average student
into a panic. A common worry
during this time of the semester
is how students can do so much
studying in so little time.
If this sounds like you, you
are not alone. As someone who
struggles with test anxiety, the
stress leading up to midterms is
something I’m all too familiar
with. Fortunately, I have some
advice on how to survive this
overwhelming time.
Talk to Your Professors
About the Exam
According to The Princeton
Review, your professor should be
your go-to person for questions
and any other information
regarding the exam. Ask
on many occasions, and eased
some of my anxiety.
Study Every Day Leading
up to the Exam
The Princeton Review also
states that you can spend less
time studying if you make a
plan. Include a few hours a day
devoted to studying in your
schedule. These hours do not
have to be consecutive. You can
study for one hour, take a break
and do something else, then
study for another hour.
Study With a Group
This is a great way to meet
new people and make productive
use of your time.
According to College
Magazine, a study group helps
you gain a new perspective on
your topic, learn new study
techniques and boost your
motivation.
I’ve been in a couple of math
struggling.
Unplug From Social Media
Social media can be addicting
and a massive distraction from
studying.
We’re all familiar with the
phenomenon of watching so
many videos on YouTube that you
lose track of time. Alternatively,
scrolling through Instagram to
see what your friends have been
up to, and realize you’ve spent
more time on the platform than
you originally planned to.
As someone who is addicted
to their phone, this situation
happens to me all the time.
Log off of all your social
media accounts if you think they
will keep you from studying. You
can always log back in if you feel
you need a break from studying.
Just make sure to watch the clock
and log off before you waste too
much time.

to memorize things when you’re
sleep deprived and relying on
coffee to keep you awake.

exam. Your brain can only take
in so much information at one
time.
Studying for midterms
doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
As long as you manage your time
and feel confident, you will have
a good chance of passing your
exams.

On vs. Off-Campus?

A
s a student who lives off-campus,
I’m not going to lie and claim
that I’m living my best life and
pretend that I’m better off this way.
In fact, sometimes I feel quite often
isolated from living the fun-campus-life.
I come to school, attend all my
classes, and then drive back home either
to work or home to study. I’m telling you,
if it weren’t for all those emails from the
Student Government Association (SGA)
and other organizations on campus
about events and activities, I wouldn’t
survive in Radford.
David Smith, a sophomore at Radford
University who lives off campus, said,
“Living off-campus can be very hard,
like when I come in the morning and
accidentally listen to everybody talking
about what happened last time on
campus.” Smith continued, “Especially if
it was a party, and everyone is like, oh it
was lit and all the funny stuff they did, I
feel so left [out].”
I can relate to that feeling to some
extent.
If you did not strive to be involved
on campus and exerted no effort to fit in,
your college years might not be the best
four years of your life.
Living off-campus can be an
advantage in terms of having an
apartment, you don’t have to deal with all
the drama of doing the dishes, cleaning
up, or fighting over the bathroom. It’s
also good for a quiet place to study in
peace without being distracted by your
roommates or other students in the

hallway. However, living on-campus still
can be the best choice for some people.
Stephanie Russel, a junior at Radford
University who lives on campus, said,
“Well, being away from home and leaving
your family for that long time, is already
rough, I think living on-campus makes it
kind of easier, making friends and going
to your 8 a.m. class in sweat pants has
never been so easy,”
I understand why most students
prefer living on-campus.
For one, students who are not from
this area didn’t make it to Radford, VA to
segregate themselves from their peers.
At the end of the day, they don’t want
to miss the chance of making friends,
enjoying college life, and being involved.
It’s also one of the many ways to ease up
homesickness.
On the contrary, living off-campus
can be somewhat annoying, getting up a
couple of hours early for your 8 a.m. class
could be real torture, I’ve done it before,
mainly staying up late to catch up on
assignments or to study for an exam. Not
to mention the struggle to find a parking
spot in the only three commuter parking
lots.
Ashley Weisman, a junior at Radford
University who lives off-campus, said,”
I’m a private person, and sometimes I
just need my space. I don’t think I would
be very comfortable to live in a dormitory
with a roommate who is a stranger to
me; I just didn’t want to overthink it.”
Eventually, it’s your choice.
You are the one who decides which
way you would like to live your college
life, the fun life or the quiet, peaceful
one. Remember, there is never the best
choice. Whatever you go with, there are
always advantages and disadvantages.

Living With Roommates

C
ollege is a big transition, and part
of that transition is learning how
to live with a person that you’re
not related to. Having roommates can be
one of the best or worst things depending
on how the two, three, or four of you
receive each other.
You’re sharing your personal space
with a person you don’t know, and
anything could happen.
Living with someone is kind of like a
relationship but without the emotional
drama. The key to having a great year with
your roommates is communication.
Now say it with me everybody,
com·mu·ni·ca·tion.
If you talk it out with your roommate,
set rules and guidelines for your dorm or
apartment, and make sure they are clear,

your roommate and you will be just fine.
Clarify what you both want because

year around each other. Learn how to

shoulders and tell the resident assistant
or resident director about it. It’s better to
change rooms than to stay where the air
is toxic, and you keep having issues where
things could escalate.

Women’s Basketball Wins 11 Consecutive Times

n Feb 23. The Radford
University women’s
basketball team
presented to fans exactly what
they were made of as they
overcame Campbell in a close
victory in the electrifying
Dedmon center.
The hard-fought victory tied
a program-record with the ladies
winning their 11th straight
game! The Highlanders now sit
at a 19-6 overall record and a
distinguished 13-1 record when
facing teams in the Big South
conference.
The Highlanders came out
on fire as they usually do to
begin the game. They vaulted
out to a 14-3 lead instantly, but

ollowing an outstanding
stretch of games, the
Radford University
Softball team concluded the
Fairfield Inn & Suites Seahawk
Softball Bash with an impressive
4-1 record!
A pair of members on the
team showed much promise as
they each would take home big
south weekly honors.
Sophomore Sydney Fisher
was named Big South Player
of the week following her
incredible performance as she
leads the Radford University
softball team to much success.
Fisher began her collegiate
career at Georgia Southern
University as she played in 29
games, also starting in 27 of

The third quarter was tightly
contested as Campbell scored
16 points and the Highlanders
added 13 points which concluded
the hard-fought period with the
score tied at 45.
At the 4:11 mark in the
4th quarter the Camels would

second-half 54-48. Yet, the
Highlanders just never gave up
as they showed their remarkable
durability while the clock
kept ticking. They went on to
outscore the Camels 13 to 3 to
finish the contest.

57-56, Khiana Johnson stole
the basketball from Campbells
Hayley Barber and dashed down
the floor to give the Highlanders
a 58 to 56 lead with 1:02 left to
play.

Since Fisher made the
transfer to Radford University
during this offseason, she
has caused nothing but a
positive impact on her team’s
performances.
The Appling, Ga. native hit
.476 with 10 hits in 21 at-bats.
She also had one triple and even
went on to gather seven runs
scored, which is a team high to
add along with her six RBIs (Run
batted in).
Fisher is known for often
bringing her above-average
speed to the table as she was
able to account for nine base
steals.
Freshman Brooke Bond was
named Big South Freshman
player of the week as she
made her collegiate debut in
Wilmington, against Howard,
Campbell would miss on a
3-point attempt with forty-two
seconds to go in the contest.
Walker would then get that key
rebound for the Highlanders,
while Johnson was fouled an
sent to the line, ultimately
hitting both of her free throw
shots with 14 seconds left in the
game to make it 60-57.
The guests would get one
last chance to tie the game
but Campbells three-point
attempt with only six seconds
left was missed, and Savannah
Felgemacher captured the key
rebound. She was then instantly
fouled, and she made one-of-
two from the free throw line to
put the game away at 61 to 57.
Lydia Rivers accounted for
18 points, putting on a fantastic
performance that leads the team
to score on this evening.
The Kinston, N.C native shot
a remarkable 6 for 9 from the
she was chosen to pinch-hit
with two runners on base during
the seventh inning.
Bond would surely accept
the challenge and showed much
confidence as she went on to
produce an impressive three-run
home run.
The next day, Bond would
continue her dominance as she
produces a two-run hit after she
was placed in another pinch-hit
situation before staying in the
game. She also accounted for
the second pair of RBIs with a
double.
Although Bond only had just
four at-bats, the Hampton, Va.
native currently leads Radford
with seven runs batted in.
The Freshman has a lot left
in the tank as she continues to
show promise.

Bond and Fisher helped lead

throw line. She also continued
to dominate down low adding 9
rebounds on the evening as she
once again proved why she is
the Big south’s current leading
rebounder.
Senior guard/forward
Destinee Walker who came off
of a dominant 26 point game
at Winthrop on Feb. 19 would
exhibit an incredible amount
of passion, also during the
contest as she accounted for 10
key points, playing the entire
40-minute game.
Johnson would go on to
finish up the game with 15 total
points, six rebounds, and two
crucial game-changing steals.w

The Softball team will
begin to focus their attention
to the Holy City Showdown, a
tournament that’s being hosted
by the College of Charleston,
and that is scheduled to take
place between Thursday, Feb. 21
- Saturday, Feb. 23.

he Dedmon Center was
packed to the rafters
Thursday night as
the Highlanders held off the
Winthrop Eagles 87-81 to
maintain their spot atop the Big
South Conference rankings at
11-2.
This meeting between
Radford and Winthrop mirrored
their first matchup earlier in the
season. In both games, Radford
trailed by two going into
the halftime break and came
back shooting lights out and
dominating the second half.
At the start of the game,
Winthrop gave the crowd a
scare as they went up 10-0 in
the first few minutes. However,
Carlik Jones ended their fun as
he lobbed a beautiful pass to Ed
Polite Jr. for a monster alley-oop
slam that sparked a 15-0 run for
the Highlanders.
Following this incredible
comeback, both teams traded
buckets back and forth making
the end of the first half an
intense, heavily contest match.
Radford had some help off the
bench by Devin Hutchinson as
he knocked down two back to
back shots from beyond the arc
upon checking in.
Winthrop began to pull away
yet again, as they were able to
tally seven threes in the first
half. Still, their run was fleeting
as Jones tossed another alley-
oop to Polite Jr.

16. Jones also finished with
eight assists, four rebounds, and
four steals. Hicks and Holland
combined for 26 points.
The Highlanders shot 61.3
percent from the field in the
second half and were six for
eleven from beyond the arc
aiding in their jump ahead of
Winthrop for their second win
against them this season.

s Carlik Jones drained a

enough as the Radford men’s
basketball team was defeated in
a 77-74 hard fought contest to
the Hampton Pirates inside of
the Dedmon Center on Saturday,
Feb 23.
The Highlanders began by
scoring the games first four
points, but they ended up going

three-point line, and they were
8-for-9 from the charity strike
as they took a 37-32 lead into
halftime.
As halftime concluded the
Hampton Pirates would come
out of the locker room and
instantly they would rebuild a
10-point lead.
Although after the Pirates

dunks that got the crowd
involved even more than they
already were. That 11-2 charge
carried Radford within a single
point as the score read 46-45
with 12:29 to play in the half.
The game was tied up at 55
with eight minutes left in the
contest when things would turn
around. Hampton would go on
to secure its lead with amazing
free throw shooting and intense
and snatched 11 rebounds. His
performance made it his 39th
career double-double. Jones
fired his way to 17 points, and he
dished six assists while grabbing
two rebounds also.
The Highlanders entirely
controlled points in the paint
throughout this contest though
as they ended up outscoring the
Hampton Pirates, 38 to 22 down
low.
Hampton went on to hit
now holds a 19-9 overall record
and an 11-3 record in Big South
action.
