mh Airicta Ohara CURRICULUM FOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING JOYMANDY UNIVERSITY DAYLIGISL, AVR NaPAL avod INTRODUCTION Kathmandu Univesity is an institute of higher learning, dedicated to maintain high standard of acedemic excellence. "The university is truly 2 ational institution established to provide for the long tenm need of Nepal, by supplying persons with qualifications that are widely recognized and highly in demand inthe job market" - Kathmandu University Bullein. Vision-statement of university is "to become a word class university devoted to bringing knowledge and technology tothe services of Nepal”. The university has the mission to provide quality education for leadership. Therefore K.U has felt need to establish B.Se, Nursing education program. In 2003, on the suggestion of the Dean of Medical Sciences, Kathmandu University, a need assessment was carried out by VSO Curriculum Development Advisor, Valerie Mackay-Greer. This included nursing manpower needs ascertained through the Country Assessment Nursing Workforce Document (2002), the Nepal Nursing Council registration numbers andthe Ministry of Health, * Second Long Term Health Plan (1997- 20171, then country surveys (9) were completed on nursing programs and on National ‘Nursing, Organizations (12) entry to practice requirements. The outcome given in the "Nepali context favored a four (4) year of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B Se. Nursing) program. A nursing education task group was formed to move planning forvad for this possiiiy ‘The first activity undertaken was a stakeholders’ meeting in July 2003. with appreximately forty participants from nursing education, practice and management. The focal point of discussion revealed around the furure of nursing education in Nepal, framed by thee questions: 1) What knowledge, attitudes and skills do nurses need now? 2) What are the precont deficits in the knowledge, attitudes and alle of eurret muro 5) How can new nursing knowledge, atitudes and skills be leamed? This mesting [geneited interests and commitment in further development of a Bachelor of Science in "Nursing. It was decided thatthe cursiculum should provide academic basis to produce a B.Sc. Nurse graduates who will hve competent skills to practice in variety of situations. In October 2003, Dhulikhel Medical Institute Nursing faculty hosted a curiculum ‘workshop bringing nursing educators and practitioners together to collaboratively evelop a nursing model for the Kathmandu University B.Sc. Nurse program comprised ‘of ® program vision, philosophy, aims, objectives, met-concepts and conceptual framework. Expert group developed the curriculum for the B.Sc. degree course to Kathmanda University
