This proces is being conducted in accordance with Alaska Statute 41.35.070(b) (¢)and includes 1 determination of historic prehistoric or archaeological values, 2) determination of effet, and 3) mitigation of adverse effect, To aide your review we respectuly provide the following information ' Determination of Elpilty for the Alaska Centennial Museum [Alaska State Museum) Juneau ‘Short Report prepared by Department of Natural Resources Ofice of History and Archaeology dated November 2010. ‘+ Alaska State Museum Condition Summary memorandum dated November 12, 2010. ‘Alternative Sites memorandum dated November 30, 2010, ‘+ This information along with addtional project plans and information is avaliable to you at vaywt.alaskalamp blogspot.com. The public comment period willend on January 5, 2011. \We submit this report from the ONR Office of History and Archaeology identifying the existing ‘Alaska State Museum Building eligible under thee evaluation as an historically significant structure. + Speifcally da you concur with, not concur with or have recommendations related to ‘determining the building eligible forthe National Register of Historic Paces under Criterion A, Criterion C, and/or Criterion Consideration G? “Prosiing jor the safe movement of people and goods and the daly of tte orice” + Do you have recommendations related tothe other criteria? ‘+ Doyouagree wth the recommendation for eligibilty? {Q2: There are ongoing plans being developed atthe ste ofthe present state museum to integrate the Division of Libraries Archives and Museums. The Project Team has investigated the reuse of the ‘existing building for this project. The report generated from this investigation i provided. There are several challenges to the exstng structure that make the integrated facility dificult while trying ‘maintain the historical values of the existing building. For these reasons along with inherent limlications to project schedule and budget, the project team does not plan to design options for keeping the existing structure intact. The project plans indicate complete demolition ofthe existing ‘Alaska State Museum and it currently Incorporates the following mitigation options: reuse of the existing conerete exterior panels and plan for interpretive work and/or exhibits that celebrate the ‘centennial, the original museum and the significance of each. ‘+ Ate the projec plans adequate for mitigation of averse effects? + Are thece other mitigation efforts that shouldbe considered for incorporation into the new project? (23: The Project Team has been requested by DNR OHA/SHPO to give serious consideration to an alternate project site. In response to this, the project team has prepared the enclosed sites ‘memorandum which includes a preliminary evaluation ofthe adjacent properties in downtown, Juneau. ‘+ Should site acquisition be possible and site viability be confirmed reasonable by DEED, would ‘you support project relocation efforts in order a preserve the ensting Alaska State Museum? The State has no other uses forthe existing museum. Should the projec be relocated, do you recommend acquisition ofthe existing building by CB for city uses?
