Wearing School Uniform is a Must?

A school uniform is an outfit—a set of standardized clothes—worn primarily for an educational

institution. They are common in primary and secondary schools in various. When used, they form the
basis of a school's dress code.

Wearing a school uniform is a compulsory for some high schools in our country, Indonesia.
However, some high schools don’t require their students to wear uniforms. Which one of these school
policies is better?

In our country, wearing school uniforms for high school students is a crucial tradition,
considering the fact that there isn’t any law about school uniform applied. Those who have this tradition
think that students don’t have to wear anything fashionable instead of neat; recalling that going to
school is for knowledge, not modeling. Others―especially parents― say that school uniform is a pretty
good idea to prevent their children asking for more clothes. It will be rather annoying if your children
solicit more clothes each week, right? Another opinion comes from those high school authorities; they
absolutely prefer their students to wear school uniforms to show their own school identity,
remembering the fact that students wear Batik school-made on Thursday and Friday. But the most
reasonable opinion is to prevent some economic-class discrimination among students. For example, if
students wear ordinary clothes, they will be embarrassed or even can’t concentrate for their study.

Meanwhile, some high schools ―especially private schools― prefer to oblige their students to
wear certain kind of school uniforms, OSIS, on Monday, and it is even just for respecting the tradition.
They give their students full authority to choose their own style of clothing for the other five days to
develop their creativities and characters. Moreover, the teachers can spot what characters they have to
get more amities. Others think that many students can’t wear some kinds of fabrics on account of
allergy, or some girl-students who can’t wear skirt because of discomfort, and many other reasons.

Therefore, I think the high schools should oblige the students to wear uniform to prevent the
economic-class discrimination. However, the students can get permissions if they have allergy or
something else about their uniforms. And the high schools shouldn’t change the Batik uniforms styles so
their students’ parents don’t have to take money out, anymore.
