Topic: School should ban school uniforms

Dear Mr. Principle,

I am writing to you regarding the fact that students to this day, have to wear school uniforms in
school. I personally have had a horrible experience wearing such a bland and boring uniform
everyday, which makes this topic particularly sensitive to me. XXX International school holds a
special place in my heart since I have been in the school for 8+ years which I why I want the
school’s rules and regulations to benefit not only myself but the other 1200+ students that study
there. Keeping school uniforms dismantles the student’s creative expression, which thereby
bans an essential human right, being the freedom of expression. Which leads to my moral
standing; that XXXInternational school should hereby ban the school uniform and let students
creatively express their individualistic character everyday in the form of clothing each day.

There are several possible methods that the school can use that allows both students and
faculty to be comfortable in any clothing that is chosen by them. School uniforms discourage
comfort because the pants have to be longer than 3/4’s to be deemed appropriate and the PE
uniforms are almost completely white , which may cause parents to do extra work since it is
extremely difficult to remove those stains from the dirt and the field and achieve the same color
(white) again. Personally, neither my maid or my mother prefers to wash the blue ois t-shirt
since if rubbed too hard (while washing) the blue color wears off and becomes lighter. Jackets
that are bought from anywhere other than the school are also not allowed , which makes life
extremely difficult in the winter since the school jackets don’t even contain a hoodie.

On debate.org , 71% of people say no school uniforms which proves a major dislike for school
uniforms in general. This indirectly proves that several schools have already removed this
ridiculous rule and so should we. As a school, that is one of the most technologically developed
in Mumbai or even in India, we should stop pertaining to common Indian School stereotypes
and become a better school as a whole. Plus, this rule could possibly attract a lot of students to
our school which would be beneficial to the school’s financial needs. If we take a small step to
make our school better, than other school’s will take note and follow us and we could even be
looking at banning school uniforms in America if taken certain measures.

Some might argue, that giving students the right to wear anything would give them right to wear
inappropriate or demeaning clothing. This issue is sometimes the reason why school adhere to
school uniforms. This is easily fixable, instead of wearing the same old uniforms everyday to
school; our school could adjust a dress code that may ban very exposing clothing or shirts with
illogical messages. Even though this is highly unlikely, since almost all parents monitor what
their child wears and won’t allow them to wear such type of clothing, easy to follow rules could
be kept in place of school uniforms.

In conclusion, school uniforms could disrupt a friendly and safe environment being our school
and actions should be taken to ban all types of uniforms that exist in our school. Our school
would thereby also allow freedom of expression if school uniforms are taken out of the picture.
This measure would make me and my family extremely happy and proud to be associated with
XXX International School and after reading I hope you would feel the same.

Thank You,

Student
