Why should we support uniforms being mandatory.

Personally, I think that it is only sensible to say that students should wear uniforms in view of the fact
that it promotes school discipline, and being able to wear something that everyone else is wearing
lessens the percentage of bullying as some people might be less fortunate than others to wear their
own clothes to school every day, not only that it’s impractical and sometimes inappropriate but it may
also add pressure for students that aren't as fortunate as others.

Although, this argument might seem not as important as other issues, let me give you a figure, 39% of
students who do not wear popular or ‘trend-y’ clothes gets bullied, especially in our society today that
as views and opinions change, the fashion industry evolves, and so easily, some clothes are
considered to be ‘not so trend-y anymore’ or outcasts, which again suggests why some students gets
bullied. So even though you still have to buy a set of uniform, you will be able to save more money
rather than buying a brand new pair of jeans, up-to-date clothes and recent shoes. Some schools might
promote an optional choice whether a student can choose to wear a school uniform or their own
clothes, but I believe that it defeats the purpose of ‘freedom’ as, not only it is so unorganized to look
at, but also may imply inequality.

Moreover, a uniform, presents decency and also develops them to dress smartly. Additionally,
students would be less distracted as they would not have to talk about others’ clothes if they are all
wearing a school uniform, therefore, it promotes a more educationally focused environment that
would be beneficial to all of the students, it would result to a more serious environment as well if they
have nothing to laugh about because of the way someone dresses.

On the other hand, others might argue that they would want to exhibit their personalities through
fashion, but the school is not the place to express your love for fashion but rather, it is a place to
learn and expand their knowledge so that they would be academically prepared for their next steps
such as for college, and to prosper well-mannered individuals that would unlikely make fun of
someone's living conditions.
3 months ago, Vice President Sara Duterte, who also serves as Education Secretary in a concurrent
capacity, said Monday that school uniforms will not be required for School Year 2022 to 2023. She
issued the directive in a bid to avoid additional expenses for families of students. “Even before the
pandemic, it is not a strict requirement for public schools to wear uniforms to avoid incurring
additional costs to the families of our learners,” VP Sara Duterte told reporters.
“All the more that it will not be required this School Year given the increasing prices and economic
losses due to the pandemic,” she added.

But at what cost?

Many people stated that school uniforms are an expensive, unnecessary purchase which puts an added
financial burden on low-income families. But with school uniforms being optional, this worsens the
school and the children’s environment. When students don’t wear school uniforms it can be easy to
spot kids with the most and least economic privilege based on what they wear to school. One
argument used in favor of school uniforms is that when kids wear uniforms visible class markers
between rich kids and poor kids are decreased or eliminated, which may lead to more social mixing
along economic lines.

Schools are considered to be the second home of students so it is only fair that we treat everyone
equitably, especially when it would affect people into thinking that their style is not as good or they
aren't able to go with the trend because they can’t afford.

Furthermore, if students would be able to wear their own clothes, they would likely shop online as
they produce clothes that are inexpensive and they do it quickly, this then falls into fast fashion that is
a 10% factor of global CO² emissions yearly.

So, let's rethink again, shall we? This option affects someone's mental health and would likely affect
the environment too.
