Goodbye 2010, Welcome 2011! Propaganda Fide Secretary General
I t is incredible the year 2010 is gone! It now belongs to the annals
of history. This was the year that saw much excitement and

expectation among the African Community. What with the hosting to
the world’s major soccer event, the 2010 FIFA Football World Cup in
South Africa! It was also an extraordinary year for funs of the reality
show – Big Brother All Stars, again hosted in South Africa! These
events that may seem remote to the religious sphere, had an impact
on the people we minister to. Where do most of the people get their
formation today? Our Eating, drinking and dressing codes, where
do they come from? Is it not from new public squares, the media?
Where do we get our modern and globalized culture? Is it not from
the media, television in particular? Indeed the world around us has an
effect on how we socialise.
As a Church in Livingstone, the year 2010 has been
a blessing from one level to the other. In 2010, we saw the Lord
blessing us with the celebration of the Silver Jubilee of our Bishop,
the Rt. Rev. Raymond Mpezele, as shepherd of our Church. With him,
we thank the Lord for the gift of faith. However, we shall not relax in
our zeal for the Kingdom until Christ is totally formed in our diocese
(cf. Gal. 4:19). Last year, the diocese, hosted the implementation
workshop on the Second African Synod that was held in Rome from
4th to 25th October 2009, under the theme: The African Church in the
Service to Reconciliation, Justice and Peace. While still waiting for
the Post-Synodal document, we hope that the influence of that synod
will have a great impact on the various spheres of our endeavours,
both on personal and church levels. In the same year, we witnessed
the appointment of Archbishop Emeritus of Lusaka, Merdado
Mazombwe as cardinal. What joy for the church in Zambia and what
unifying factor this appointment has brought not only to the Church
but to the whole nation too! How can we forget the commemoration
of the Fifth Anniversary of Radio Musi-O-Tunya and the Hosting of
the Catholic Charismatic Conference and Rally? All these blessings,
we owe them the Lord. He is master of all that we are. It is from the
Lord that we have received everything for free (cf. Matthew 10:8). To
Him be praise and honour.
Just as much as we have received good things from the
Lord, we also experienced pain, disappointment, discouragement
and frustration as individuals, as family members and as a Church.
Sickness and death struck us. As a local church how could we
ever forget the challenge that befell us when the late Fr. Leonard
Mulyokela was prematurely called back to the Lord? His death came
at a time when our diocese has a shortage of priests. We are hopeful
that the Lord who called Fr. Leonard is going to bless us with His
pastoral agents at his own time. As for the late, we are of the firm
belief that he will continue to enjoy the peace in the bosom of the
Lord.
That was 2010. What about 2011? How are we going to

r. Timothy Lehane, SVD, the Secretary General of the Propagation
of the Faith of the Pontifical Mission Societies, visited the Diocese
of Livingstone from 24th to 25th October 2010. While in the Diocese,
he made mission visits to all the six urban parishes in Livingstone
and one rural parish. He equally visited St. Joseph's Hospice, Radio
Musi-O-Tunya and Cheshire Home. He also made a conducted tour
of Musokotwane Priests' House Project, which is among the projects
supported by the Propagation of Faith.
Fr. Timothy was full of joy at the mission going on in
Livingstone Diocese. He had a fruitful experience. He has gone
back to the Vatican and has passed on the torch of missions to us.
We thank him for visiting Livingstone Diocese and for challenging
us to continue promoting and supporting the missions. Throughout
his brief visit to the diocese, Fr. Timothy was in the company of Fr.
Bernard M. Zulu, National PMS Director and Fr. Imasiku Ngalama,
the Diocesan PMS Director. §
Epiphany Sunday
T he Holy Childhood of the Pontifical Mission Societies celebrates
the Feast of Epiphany as a reminder to all christians that Christ
manifests himself to "mere children" - Matthew 11:25. Children's
humble hearts, their trusting attitude, their loving disposition,

their quick reconciling nature and their innocent witness to the
Good News of Our Lord Jesus, can serve as good example for good
christian living to other children and to older christians. The Kingdom
of God, indeed belongs to children - Mark 10:14.
Epiphany is Holy Childhood day. On 2nd January 2010, we
celebrate Epiphany Sunday. The theme of this Sunday is: Missionary
Children: Give Faith, Hope and Love. With a definite heart, we
affirm missionary children can be pioneers in upholding and spreading
of the three cardinal virtues of faith, hope and love, which are also
principal Kingdom values. Guided by this theme, we are challenged
to help children respond to the call of God to live with joy, the gift of
faith, which is grounded in their hope for the Kingdom of God and
inspired by love.
Let us pray before, during and after Epiphany 2011, that the
light of Christ may reach, touch and illumine the lives of children in
our parishes, and the the lives of all the children of the world. The
Church also counts on the prayers of the children and their active
participation in the mission of the Church.

Conference and Rally
he Catholic Charismatic Renewal
Movement in conjunction with the
Diocese of Livingstone organized a
Conference and an Open-air Evangelization
Rally under the Theme: “Come back to
me, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life
– John 14:6". The main focus of both the
conference and rally was to let people
of God in Livingstone to experience the
fullness of the God's presence through the
working of the Holy Spirit in the person of
Jesus Christ.
The conference took place from 8th – 12th
November 2010 at the Youth Community
Training Centre in Libuyu. It was facilitated
by Fathers Ignatius Muyunda from
Mongu Diocese and Anthony Musaala
from Kampala Archdiocese, Uganda.
Some local Priests and Religious Sisters
gave various inputs at the conference
too. About 296 people participated at the
conference. This number included the
laity, priests, brothers and religious sisters.
Some of the participants were drawn from
Namibia, Botswana, Mongu, Ndola and
Monze Dioceses, as well as from Lusaka
Archdiocese. The Conference also attracted
a good number of people from Pentecostal
Churches around Livingstone.
On 12th November the Priests,
Brothers and the Religious Sisters had a
special session with Fr. Anthony Musaala.
The focus of the reflection with this group
centered on the outpouring of the Holy
Spirit and the service that comes forth from
the outpouring of the Spirit.
The Open Air Rally run from 12th
to 14 November 2010 at Zambezi Basic

School. The rally was officially opened and
closed by Rev. Fr. John D. Rurangwa, the
Catholic Charismatic Renewal Spiritual
director, who represented the Rt. Rev.
Raymond Mpezele, Bishop of Livingstone
who was, at that time, out of town on
duty. Approximately 2000 people were in
attendance.
The Lord worked wonders during
the Conference and Rally. According to the
theme of the Conference and Rally “Come
back to me, I am the Way, the Truth and the
Life”, many people indeed came back to the
Lord and were truly touched. To this day,
many people still talk about the spiritual
and physical benefits of the Conference
and Rally.
We thank the Catholic Charismatic
Renewal members in the Diocese of
Livingstone for having organized such an
enriching spiritual exercise. We hope and
pray that this experience will continue to
grow in people, as we move towards Jesus,
the Way, the Truth and the Life. §
Lusu Mission handed
to the Diocese
O n 12th December, 2010, the
Parish Priest of Lusu, Fr.
Boris Dabo, a Fidei Donum priest
from Croatia, handed over Lusu
Mission to the Diocese. The hand
over ceremony was witnessed by
the Bishop of Livingstone, Rt. Rev.
Raymond Mpezele.
Lusu Mission was recently
established with missionary
cooperation from Croatia, under the
guidance of Fr. Boris Dabo. Father.
leaves this parish, to start building
yet another mission at Njoko
Malomo on the eastern side of the
Zambezi River, from Lusu.
Lusu Parish will now be
serviced by Diocesan Priests from
St. Kizito's Catholic Church,
Sesheke. Njoko Malomo will be
the third Mission to be established
by Fr. Boris, after Shangombo and
Lusu.
We wish Fr. Boris and all
the lay co-workers God's blessing
as they move on to setup Njoko
Malomo Mission. §
St. Joseph's Hospice
Newsletter
O n 16th December 2010, His Lordship
Bishop Raymond Mpezele officially
launched the St. Joseph's Hospice Newsletter.
Through this medium, the Hospice seeks to
share its experience with the community of
Livingstone, the cooperating partners and all
people of good will.
The first issue contains among
other issues a success story,local community
involvement and health tips.

Zambia Association
of Sisterhood
T
he Zambia Association of
Sisterhood (ZAS) in the diocese
of Livingstone comprises six religious
congregations of women. The group
meets every three months to discuss
pertinent and current issues that affect
the sisters' work. The sisters share
pastoral experiences, achievements
and challenges as well.
In the year 2011, the association
will focus on Environmental Issues,
like refuse management, Women and
children issues, and HIV and AIDS
matters. §
