STAFFING FORMULA

1. Categorize the number of patient by percent of patients in each level of care (whether
minimal, moderate, intermediate, intensive or highly specialized care)
2. Find total number of nursing care hours needed by the patient at each category level
a. Number of patients at each level by average number of nurse’s hours
b. Get sum of nurse’s hours needed at various levels
3. Find the actual number of nursing care hours needed by these given number of
patients
a. Multiply the total nursing care hours needed per day by the total number of
days in a year
4. Find the actual number of working hours rendered by each nursing personnel per year
a. Multiply number of hours on duty per day by the actual number of working days
per year
5. Find the total number of nursing personnel needed
a. Divide the total # of nursing care hours needed per year by the actual number
of working hours rendered by an employee per year
b. Find the number of reliever – multiply the number of nursing personnel needed
per day by 0.15 (FOR 40 HOURS / WEEK) or 0.12 (FOR 48 HOURS / WEEK)
c. Add the number of reliever to the number of nursing personnel needed
6. Categorize into professional and non-professionals
a. Multiply the number of nursing personnel according to the number of
professional to non-professionals
b. Distribute by shifts
i. Professionals
ii. Non-professionals
