Nursing Care Hours Per Patient Day (NCHPPD) = Total hours worked by nursing staff in a 24-hour period ________________________________________________

the patient census at the end of that 24-hour period Formula to Determine Staffing Patterns Full Time Equivalent FTE) This is a formula that uses nursing care hours and annual hours of work provided by one FTE. It is a measure of the work commitmen t of a full-tie employee. A full-time employee works 5 days a week or 40 ho urs per week for 52 weeks a year. This amounts to 2,080 hours of work time. Th e formula is: Total Nursing care hours X days in a year --------------------------------------------------Total annual hours per one FTE Forty-Hour Week Law This formula is based on the National League of Nurses (NLN) or R.A. 5901 otherwise known as the Forty Hour Week Law. Based on National Lea gue of Nurses (NLN), the formula is: ABO x NCH -------------------No. of Working Hours Where, ABO = Average Bed Occupancy NCH = Nursing Care Hours a. Standard Value for NCH Area Surgery Nursery General Ward Medical Pediatrics OB Mixed M/S NCH 3.4 2.8 3.5 3.4 4.6 3.0 3.4 = Total number of personnel in 24 hours

d. 40 hours / week - for personnel working in hospitals with 100 bed capacity or over or whi ch are located in a1 M population. e. 48 / week - for personnel who work in agencies with lesser bed capacity or which ar e located in communities with less than 1 M population. Guidelines for Determining the Nursing Personnel Needed Step 1. Determine type of hospital whether it is primary, secondary or tertiary Hospital A is a 100-bed capacity secondary level hospital Step 2. Categorize patients according to levels of care CATEGORY Y Minimal Care 35% Intermediate Care 45% Intensive Care 20% PRIMARY 70% 25% 5% 30% 5% SECONDARY 65% TERTIAR

100 patients X 65% = 65 patients needing Minimal care 100 patients X 30% = 30 patients needing Intermediate care 100 patients X 5% = 5 patients needing Intensive Care Step 3. Find the NCH needed by patients pr day and get the SUM Minimal care = 1.5 hours Intermediate care = 3 hours Intensive care = 4.5 hours Minimal care = 65 X 1.5 hrs = 97.5 NCH Intermediate care = 30 X 3 hrs = 90 NCH Intensive Care = 5 X 4.5 hrs = 225 NCH

Step 4. Find the total NCH X 365 days 210 NCH per day X365 days = 76,650 nursing care hours Step 5. Find number of working hours per year 40 hrs/week 216 X 8 hours = 1,728 working hrs/yr 48 hrs/week -268 X 8 hours = 2,144 working hours/yr Step 6. Find the nursing personnel needed Number of personnel needed = NCH per year / working hours per year Number of relievers needed = No. of personnel X0.95 Add nursing personnel and relievers Nursing personnel 76,650 NCH / yr = 44 nursing personnel (40 h/wk) ----------------------1, 728 wrk hrs/yr or 76,650 NCH /yr = 36 nursing personnel (48 h/wk) -----------------------2, 144 wrk hrs /yr Nursing relievers: 44 nursing personnel X or 36 nursing personnel X * the average yearly absence of 65 days is 0.095. This includes 0.095* = 4 nursing relievers 0.095* = 3 nursing relievers an employee total 35 days. Dividing 35 days by 3 all mandatory leaves and other absences.

44 nursing personnel + 4 relievers = 48 nursing employees or 36 nursing personnel + 3 relievers = 39 nursing employees Step 7. Categorize into Professional and Non-Professional Primary = 55:45 Secondary = 60:40 Tertiary = 65:35 AM = 45 % PM = 37% Night = 18%
