Staffing Pattern Formula

The document provides formulas for calculating staffing patterns based on patient census. It shows the formulas for determining the number of nursing personnel, nurses per shift, nursing attendants per shift, and nurse to patient and nursing attendant to patient ratios. An example calculation is shown for a census of 169 patients, which results in 106 nursing personnel, 42 nurses on a shift (14 nurses per shift), and 64 nursing attendants on a shift (21 nursing attendants per shift).

  • Staffing Pattern Formula: Explains the staffing pattern computation with formulas and examples, focusing on nurse-to-patient ratios in hospitals.

Staffing Pattern Formula

Staffing Pattern Computation:

Formula: Census x 5 = # of nursing personnel
8 hours(hours per shift)
Note: 5 is constant
Sample:
Census= 169 patients 38 PATIENTS
169 x 5 / 8 = 106 nursing personnel 38 X 5 / 8 = 23.75 NSG SVC PERSONNEL

Formula: Nursing personnel x 40 / 100 = # of nurses per shift
Note: 40 is constant
NURSES:
106 x 40 / 100 = 42 23.75 X 40 / 100 = 9.5 NURSES/ SHIFT
42 / 3 = 14 nurses/shift

Formula: Nursing personnel / 5 = ratio of nurse is to patient 23.75/ 5 = 4.75 PATIENTS : 1 NURSE
106 / 5 = 21
Ratio: 1:21

Formula: Nursing personnel x 60 / 100 = # of nursing attendant per shift 23.75/5 X 60 / 100 = 14.25 NA/SHIFT
Note: 60 is constant

NURSING ATTENDANTS:
106 x 60 / 100 = 64 23.75 / 3 = 4.75 NA/SHIFT
64 / 3 = 7 nursing attendants/shift 23.75/ 4.74 NA/SHIFT = 5 PATIENTS
RATIO = 1 NA : 5 PATIENTS
Ratio:
106/7 = 15 106 NURSING PERSONNEL / 3 = 7 NA PER SHIFT
Ratio : 1:15 106 / 7 NA PER SHIFT = 15 PATIENT.
RATION = 1 NA : 15 PATIENTS

ACTUAL RATIO OF A CERTAIN HOSPITAL IN PHILIPPINES
1 nurse : 21 patients
1 nursing attendant : 15 patients
14 nurses/ shift
21 nursing attendants / shift
