School Report for 2009–2010 School Year

School  Stevens aims to create an environment that challenges each child to reach his or her potential by 
Mission  encouraging academic excellence, embracing diversity, and teaching social responsibility. We recognize that

School  Stevens is focusing on reading, math and a positive school environment. 
Goals Reading: At least 80% of students proficient on the state reading test, an increase from 79% in 2010.
Math: At least 75% of students proficient on the state math test, an increase from 74% in 2010.
Positive School Environment: At least a increase to the district average of 65% of students reporting feeling 
positive about the school environment.

School  Stevens Elementary has a wonderfully diverse population.  We incorporate global issues and how they relate 
Description to us here in Seattle into our curriculum at every grade level.  While we’ve seen gains in many areas, we 
& know to provide a quality education for our students, we must commit to constant examination and

Goals *Reading and Math: We provide after‐school tutoring for students in all grades.  We also have additional 
teachers who help us to lower our class size during math instruction.  This year, teachers are meeting 
regularly to discuss student data from the Measures of Academic Progress, writing conferences and unit 
tests.  

*Positive school environment: At Stevens Elementary, we believe we are all learners first.  Elementary 
school is a place to make mistakes and learn from them.  This is also true for social skills and problem solving.  
This year, we will focus some of our energies on creating a positive behavior plan that fosters active problem‐
solving and teaches kids the skills they will need in order to be successful in life.  This includes avoiding and 
resolving conflicts and working with others.
