Ansley Tuesday Afternoon Golf Tour (ATAG)
By: Don Nichols

On an absolutely gorgeous day, a crowd of tournament size proportions showed up for the second
round of the 2006 ATAG Tour. Twenty one players gathered around the # 10 tee eager to take on the
Ansley back nine and were quickly assembled into five teams. The first three teams were formed via
the random ball drop while the others were assigned teams in accordance with their order of arrival.

Leading off was Team 1 consisting of Henry Sawyer, Frank Corrigan, Doug Gooding, and
Richard Batelaan; followed by Team 2 members Doug Healy, Rick Eaton, Tom Player, and Don
Nichols; followed by Team 3 consisting of C.J. Young, Ollie Kennon, Russ Jobson, and Tim
Martin; Next was Team 4 with the foursome of Andy Tyber, Guy Thomson, Brad Reese, and Bill
Benning, and rounding out the competition was the Team 5 fivesome of Craig Sellner, Ron Majors,
Brooks Cowles, Marty Arnold, and visitor George McCord. (For match purposes, at the
conclusion of play the score of Ron Majors was randomly selected to be removed from the scoring of
the Team 5 fivesome.)

13 UNDER WINS IT AGAIN! TIE AVOIDED DUE TO DISQUALIFICATION!

As with last week’s opening round of the season, the winning score was 13 under. This week the
golden ale was earned by Team 3 -- C. J. Young, Ollie Kennon, Russ Jobson, and Tim Martin.
Ponying up was the woeful Team 1 which ended up finishing agonizingly first while knowing they
would also literally finish last in the competition with a dismal score of only 1 under, narrowly
avoiding the all time ATAG worst score of even par recorded during the 2005 season. To their credit,
these players , who shall not be named, (see above) stayed around long enough to fork over the
bounty. The rest of the players skated through, neither winning nor losing, having to wait until next
week’s opportunity to challenge for the cold one.

A tie for first place was avoided when, after submission of the score cards and the ceremonious
declaration of Team 3’s victory, it was determined that the Team 5 score keeper, who will also go
unnamed, (see the first player listed for Team 5 above) had erroneously recorded a par instead of
the birdie actually made by Brooks Cowles on the challenging par 4 # 16, a score that would have
put them into a 13 under tie breaker situation with Team 3. Also, another team member’s total score
was incorrectly added. An attempt to resubmit the corrected scorecard by the harassed score keeper
was quickly rejected by the Commissioner who promptly disqualified Team 5 from the competition.
KENNON IS LEADER IN THE CLUBHOUSE!

Low gross for the day was a sizzling 37 posted by 9-handicapper Ollie Kennon, who helped lead his team
to victory and who is now the low gross leader in the clubhouse for the 2006 season. Kennon had back to
back birdies on #13 and #14 in totally outclassing lower handicappers Brad Reese, Andy Tyber ,Guy
Thomson, and Rick Eaton who finished with less than impressive scores of 3 over, 4 over, 5 over and 6
over respectively.

JOBSON GRABS LOW NET! CORRIGAN EDGES OUT SELLNER FOR HIGH GROSS!

Russ Jobson belied his 19 handicap by firing an impressive 41 for a net score of 4 under, edging out
Brooks Cowles and Bill Benning and helping his team to victory --and making him the leader in the
clubhouse in this category. (Of course, he has automatically been put on the Handicap Committee’s watch
list.) Frank Corrigan earned dubious high score honors with a 55, edging out Craig Sellner who posted a
53. Frank later said he really thought he had it going there when he parred the first hole. Apologies are in
order for Mr. Sellner for the misspelling of his last name as Sellnor in last week’s issue. Mr. Sellner has
pointed out that it was the aforementioned Mr. Sellnor who posted last week’s score of 57 and not him.

C.J. YOUNG HAS SHOT OF THE DAY!

Shot of the day went to the man with no first name, C. J. Young (15), who followed his booming tee shot
on the par five # 14 with a 230 yard approach shot that landed within 12 feet of the pin, enabling him to two
putt for birdie. Russ Jobson (19) received honorable mention for landing his tee shot on the par three #12
within 6 feet of the hole and making the putt for birdie, net eagle.

MULTIPLE BIRDIES!

There were seven birdies on this day—two by Ollie Kennon , two by Brooks Cowles ( twenty three
handicapper on the way down?) , and one each by Bill Benning (22), C. J Young (15), and Russ Jobson
(19), (C.J. Young continues as leader in the clubhouse in this category with 3 birdies for the year.)

OTHER TIDBITS

It was a pleasant evening of mostly quiet ATAG camaraderie on the porch as players conversed at different
tables with many again opting for food service and several staying beyond 9 pm. No jokes were told as
ATAG humorists Danny Morris and Tom Kisgen were not in attendance.

Making their debut appearance for the 2006 season were Doug Gooding, Guy Thomson, Frank
Corrigan, Richard Batelaan, Tim Martin, Brooks Cowles, Doug Healy, and Rick Eaton, with the latter
returning after being on injured reserve for much of the 2005 season.

Doug Healy, having undergone a root canal earlier in the day, marked his return to action by placing his
opening tee shot into the street which he calmly re-teed and then promptly lined the mulligan at a 45 degree
angle toward the cars parked on the street, narrowly missing a pedestrian getting out of his car who had the
good fortune, and good reflexes, to duck.

“Metro Marty” Arnold , on the quest to get down to a size 8, again partook of a salad while downing two
or more chardonnays. (He is still owed a chardonnay from the Nickelodean pursuant to a previously
disclosed out of court settlement agreement.)

Sherman Wade and Two Glove Tom Thornhill were no shows after previously indicating they would
attend. A letter of reprimand has been placed in each of their files.
