    Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland common in men over 50 years old. As the prostate enlarges, it can mechanically obstruct the urethra and increase muscular tone in the bladder neck and proximal urethra, resulting in lower urinary tract symptoms like frequent urination, urgency, and weak urine flow. Left untreated, BPH can lead to complications like urinary retention and urinary tract infections.
