Solve practical problems combining groups of 2, 5 or 10 or sharing into equal groups

(Objective repeated in Block E Units 2 & 3)


Q: How many hands have you got each?

Work with the person sitting next to you.

Q: How many hands have 2 of you got? What if you were in groups of 3? …4?....etc

(Children may need time to count before answering the questions)

Q: There are 6 hands at a table. How many children are there?

If necessary get 3 children out to show their hands.


Continue with similar questions.

Go through Activity sheet Y1 16 with the children making sure that they know that ducks have 2 wings and 2 eyes.
Now ask them to complete it.
Show the children a bunch of grapes.

Q: Every day at break Sam has 5 grapes for his snack. How many grapes does he eat at school during the week?
Q: What calculation do we need to do?

Establish that Sam eats grapes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Q: How many days does he eat grapes?

Agree it is 5 days.

Q: How many grapes does he eat each day?

Agree it is 5.

Q: So how can we work out 5 lots of 5?

Discuss 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 25

Represent this as an array, using grapes

Explain by adding 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 or we could use the 5 times table and count up in 5’s.

Q: So how many grapes does Sam eat during a week at school?

Repeat with different numbers of days.

When the children are secure, give them Activity sheets Y1 17, 18 & 19.

Tell the children that you have 6 letters and you need to buy some stamps for them.
Stamps cost 2p.

Q: How much will I have to pay for 6 stamps?

Agree that it will be 6 lots of 2p.


Ask a child to count out 6 2p coins with the class joining in the counting in 2s. 2, 4. 6,……….

Repeat for different numbers of stamps.

Give the children Activity sheet Y1 20 to complete.

Bring the children back together and take feedback.

Now say that you have 4 more expensive letters to post and the stamps for these will cost 10p.

Q: How can I work out how much I will have to pay for the stamps?

Agree that you will need to count 4 lots of 10p.


Ask a child to count out 4 10p coins while the rest count together in 10s. 10, 20, 30, 40

Repeat for different numbers of stamps.

Give children Activity sheet Y1 21 to complete.

More able children could be given Activity sheet Y1 22.


Q: I have 8 ribbons and I want to find out how many children could have 2 each.

Show the children the ribbons and ask a child to come out and put the ribbons into groups of 2.

When they have done this agree that there are 4 groups of 2

Say: 8 divided into groups of 2 gives 4.

Q: I have 12 sweets to share between 2 friends. How many do they get each?

Ask children to work with a partner using multilink to find the answer.

Work through together and check answers.

Q: There are 20 apples in the box. How many bags, each with 2 apples, can be filled?

Do this question practically with the children using balls or multilink to represent the apples.

Repeat as often as necessary until children are sure of the concept of grouping.

Give children Activity sheets Y1 23 & 24.


Have a selection of sticks of multilink with different even numbers of cubes prepared.

Q: Do you think this stick of 10 cubes will break into 2 equal parts? Why do you think that? How many do you think will be in each part?

Ask a child to come up and divide the stick into 2.

Q: How can we tell if the 2 parts are equal? (They will be the same height.)

Repeat for 2 or 3 more sticks with different numbers of cubes.)

Give pairs of children 20 cubes and ask them to find out which numbers will break into 2 equal parts.
