What Is an Environmental Management


System (EMS)?
 An EMS is simply a set of procedures to reduce our
environmental footprint in our day-to-day activities.
 An EMS is the combination of people, policies,
procedures, review, and plans to help address
environmental issues.

Purpose of an EMS
• An EMS brings together the people, policies,
plans, review mechanisms, and procedures
used to manage environmental issues at a
facility or in an organization.
• Integration of the system capabilities with
environmental metrics and goals
• To understand and carry out environmental
“waste reduction” goals

Environmental Policy
• An environmental policy is a written statement
outlining the company's mission and driving force
behind the objectives, targets and management
programme of the EMS.
• The policy:
– States the company's aims and objectives and forms the
basis for its EMS.
– Should be endorsed and actively supported by senior
management and accepted by all staff.
– Allows management to communicate its aims and
objectives to employees and other interested parties,
including shareholders, customers and suppliers.
– Should be part of the business strategy.

Planning

activities, products, and services

Implementation and Operation
