DeYoung earns TOPS State Queen

Congratulations to our new TOPS State Queen, Ruth DeYoung. TOPS stands for, Take Off Pounds Sensibly. Ruth joined TOPS MI 1229 Sand Lake in 2002 weighing 294 lbs. Im sure it must have seemed almost impossible to her for this long journey ahead, but like all of us we start out with our mainstay and support throughout the long journey. She had many health issues to deal with. Two total knee replacements and the bones in her left foot fused, which required 13 screws with a long recovery time. One year later it was necessary to do the same to her right foot using 11 screws. She stuck to her main goal of losing weight, never dreaming of how far she would come. Becoming MI State Queen of TOPS International with a loss of 109 lbs. was a great honor. In 2007 she was honored as second place winner of Division 2 for the State of Michigan. Then in December of that same year she reached a loss of 100 lbs. In 2008 Ruth received the Century Award for maintaining that loss for 52 consecutive weeks. She found it is important to remember Calories in Calories out. You need a friend, family member or phone buddy to share your journey with. Her husband also lost 100 lbs. and a daughter in Texas lost 100 lbs. Another daughter lost 50 lbs. and joined TOPS earlier this year. Her weight loss came from exercising three times a week. She used equipment for weight training , walked the track and went to water aerobics and swam laps. On off days she used her stationary bike. Remember eating food is necessary, but also remember your portion size, carbohydrates and fats. Get plenty of water and fiber. When you eat out ask for a box and put 1/2 of your order in at box to take home. Early in July Ruth will represent Michigan at the 2011 International Recognition Days in Milwaukee, WI. We are so proud of you Ruth. Your example is there to cheer us all on to reaching our goals. Martha Bobb

Doug Anderson to perform at Pine Grove on July 3

Pine Grove Community Church is excited to welcome Doug Anderson of Ernie Haase and Signature Sound on Sunday, July 3 at 6:00 PM for the 2nd in the 2011 Summer Concert Series under The Big Tent. No tickets are necessary. A free will offering will be received to support the 2011 Summer Concert Series of Pine Grove. Basketball fans who watched Doug Anderson play for Lapel High School in the late 1980s probably had no idea what his post high school ambition really was. Most probably assumed that the all-county, all-state player, longed to become a college and NBA star. Little did they know that this standout athlete, who went on to play for Purdue University, actually aspired to become a fulltime Gospel singer. Of course, those who knew Doug best knew he as a product of a singing family and that this first love, indeed, was music. No one knew this more than Doug, himself, who believed with all his heart that God would one day allow him to lie his dream of becoming a full-time quartet member. That dream became a reality when Doug joined a quartet know as Lighthouse. His membership with Lighthouse led to a meeting with Ernie Haase when Lighthouse sang with Dougs favorite quartet, the Cathedrals. Ernie was singing with the Cathedrals, Doug recalls, and we developed a pretty good friendship . We had a mutual love for quartet music and basketball. Knowing one day that the Cathedrals would retire, Ernie told me if he ever started a group, he would call me. A few years ago he did. A small town boy at heart, Doug is thankful his career as a member of Signature Sound

COMMUNITY NEWS
a healthier and cleaner place. The following students volunteered often in the recycling process. However, all students at the Edge contributed by placing trays in the proper lunch barrels. Hats off to Mrs. Bergman and her recycling team. The volunteers names are: Tia Drilling, Ashley Baker, Taylor Soles, Alexis Davison, Megan Owen, Brook Christensen, Brooke Mason, Emily Holton and Kelsey Battle. Article published by the following 5th grade students: Jackie Holton, Taylor Reed, Brianna Conway, and Kaytlyn Selelyo. this summer. Our cats, dogs and other companion animals can be just as uncomfortable in the heat and humidity as we are and can quickly become dangerously overheated, said Frank. Pets can suffer from heat stroke, dehydration, and even sunburn. So its critical you use sound, common sense practices like not leaving your pet in a car. Even if you park it in the shade and have the windows partially open, it only takes a few minutes for temperatures inside the car to reach deadly levels. While all dogs and cats are at risk, older or very young pets, overweight pets, those with heavy coats, and short-nosed dogs may need extra care. Owners need to limit their exercise to early morning and evening on hot and humid days as asphalt becomes very hot, keep the water bowl refreshed, and be sure a cool environment is always nearby. If your pet is panting excessively or has difficulty breathing, drools excessively or appears weak or in a stupor, immediately place your pet in the shade or air conditioning and apply cool-not cold-water to reduce the animals core body temperature. Get help from a licensed veterinarian as soon as possible. The following are some other simple summer pet safety tips: n Beware of toxic agents such as plant food, insecticides, fertilizer, coolants, citronella candles, oil products, and insect coils that may be around the home and yard. n The heat, loud noise, and confusion of crowded summer events can stress pets and isnt an enjoyable experience for them. n Make sure your pet is always wearing a collar or identification such as a tag or microchip. n Maintain recommended heartworm medication since the potentially deadly heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Mrs. Bergmans Lunchroom Recycling Project

Mrs. Bergmans recycling volunteer team at Edgerton Upper Elementary has made a difference with keeping our environment clean. The team has recycled over 8,000 trays and 1,000 milk cartons. At lunch, any student who was willing to give up their recess time worked at the recycling stations cleaning and stacking trays to prepare them to be recycled. Mrs. Bergman then loaded them into her car and stored them in her garage until the weekend. She then took them to the recycling center. This idea originated when Dana Lima and Molley Hoyt asked Mrs. Sweeney about picking up the playground. While this was an excellent idea, Mrs. Bergman decided it would be easier to recycle trays in the lunch room because they did not have to deal with weather conditions such as snow and rain. We would like to thank Mrs. Bergman and all the volunteers that helped with recycling and for giving up their time to help make our environment

Poison Ivy Contact Dermatitis

I am on vacation and this is a reprint from last year. Last week I saw ve cases of Poison Ivy, all of them different in different stages. They vary from mild itching to huge blisters that weep and drain. Generally, the rash is blisters on a red base that are generally in lines. This is where the leaf rubbed across the skin leaving a trail of oil which then reacts with the skin in a sensitive person. The allergen in poison ivy is a substance called urushiol. In order to treat a reaction to the poison ivy you need to neutralize the urushiol. There are several herbs, when applied topically, which can do this. Jewelweed is one of the best. You can buy Jewelweed soap. You can also combine this with any herb that contains a signicant amount of saponins such as Soapwort, Horse Chestnut, Licorice, or Rose Leaves. Please remember that these are for topical use only as saponins shouldnt be taken internally while pregnant or nursing, but are perfectly safe when used externally. One thing to help control the itching is aloe Vera. Cool baths with powdered colloidal oatmeal (aveeno) or Epsom salts can be extremely soothing. There are several good homeopathic remedies that effectively treat contact dermatitis from poison ivy. Remember in all cases, the earlier the treatment the better. Homeopathic Rhus Tox. is made from poison oak leaves and will counteract the reaction to poison ivy. Homeopathic Croton Tig. is very good for the itching. Homeopathic Cantharis is good for any blisters, burns, or burning sensations. The best treatment is prevention. Avoid these plants. Go on line or to the library to nd pictures. Teach yourself and your children what these plants look like. Wear long sleeves and gloves. Wash these clothes with hot water and detergent after you are done working outside. The oil can get on tools, re wood, shoes, pets, and any inanimate object. Spraying objects with a soapy water solution will break up the oil and neutralize it. Some people who have to work around these plants all the time will apply soap, like dish liquid to their skin before going to work and rinse it off after work. This seems to break up the oil on contact with the skin. But, I am not sure how safe it is to have those chemicals on the skin all the time. Occasional use, I am sure, is ne. So, learn the plant, prevent exposure, treat naturally as soon as possible, and see your doctor if the natural measures fail. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Have lots of love but not a lot of room? Volunteers are always appreciated!

These three brothers were released by their owners and in need of loving homes. They all enjoy chasing little movement whether it is a dust bunny or a cat toy rolling across the oor. They are very relaxed little guys who dont seem to mind much of anything. They are about 12 weeks old and ready for homes as of 6/15/11 after they have been neutered and made current on their vaccinations.

THANK YOU The Coral Days Festival celebration is produced by volunteers who work throughout the year raising money, planning and organizing the various events. The festival changes a little bit each year; but one thing remains the same: there is something fun for everyone! Thank You to the Coral Fire Station, Coral Days Festival Committee, Coral Fire Auxiliary and all who had a part in making our festival a success.
