Congratulations to our new TOPS StateQueen, Ruth DeYoung. TOPS stands for, TakeOff Pounds Sensibly. Ruth joined TOPS MI1229 Sand Lake in 2002 weighing 294 lbs. I’msure it must have seemed almost impossible toher for this long journey ahead, but like all of us we start out with our mainstay and supportthroughout the long journey. She had many health issues to deal with. Two total knee replacements and the bones inher left foot fused, which required 13 screws with a long recovery time. One year later it wasnecessary to do the same to her right foot using11 screws. She stuck to her main goal of losing weight, never dreaming of how far she would come. Be-coming MI State Queen of TOPS International with a loss of 109 lbs. was a great honor. In 2007 she was honored as second place winner of Division 2 for the State of Michi-gan. Then in December of that same year shereached a loss of 100 lbs. In 2008 Ruth receivedthe Century Award for maintaining that loss for52 consecutive weeks. She found it is important to remember Calo-ries in Calories out. You need a friend, family member or phone buddy to share your journey  with. Her husband also lost 100 lbs. and a daugh-ter in Texas lost 100 lbs. Another daughter lost50 lbs. and joined TOPS earlier this year. Her weight loss came from exercising threetimes a week. She used equipment for weighttraining , walked the track and went to wateraerobics and swam laps. On off days she usedher stationary bike.Remember eating food is necessary, but alsoremember your portion size, carbohydrates and
fats. Get plenty of water and ber. When you eat
out ask for a box and put 1/2 of your order in at box to take home.Early in July Ruth will represent Michiganat the 2011 International Recognition Days inMilwaukee, WI. We are so proud of you Ruth. Your exampleis there to cheer us all on to reaching our goals.Martha Bobb
DeYoung earns TOPS State Queen
Pine Grove Community Church is excitedto welcome Doug Anderson of Ernie Haase andSignature Sound on Sunday, July 3 at 6:00 PMfor the 2nd in the 2011 Summer Concert Seriesunder The Big Tent. No tickets are necessary. A free will offering will be received to support the2011 Summer Concert Series of Pine Grove.Basketball fans who watched Doug Ander-son play for Lapel High School in the late 1980’sprobably had no idea what his post high schoolambition really was. Most probably assumed that the all-county,all-state player, longed to become a college andNBA star. Little did they know that this stand-out athlete, who went on to play for PurdueUniversity, actually aspired to become a full-time Gospel singer.Of course, those who knew Doug best knew he as a product of a singing family and that this
rst love, indeed, was music. No one knew this
more than Doug, himself, who believed with allhis heart that God would one day allow him tolie his dream of becoming a full-time quartetmember. That dream became a reality when Doug joined a quartet know as Lighthouse. His mem- bership with Lighthouse led to a meeting withErnie Haase when Lighthouse sang with Doug’sfavorite quartet, the Cathedrals. “Ernie wassinging with the Cathedrals,” Doug recalls, “and we developed a pretty good friendship . We hada mutual love for quartet music and basketball.Knowing one day that the Cathedrals would re-tire, Ernie told me if he ever started a group, he would call me. A few years ago he did.” A small town boy at heart, Doug is thank-ful his career as a member of Signature Sound
