Equipment/Utensils including glass wares. 1pt

 Triple beam balance

 Watch glass
 Spatula
 250ml beaker
 20ml and 100ml measuring cylinder
 Mortar and pestle
 Glass stirring rod

Method/Procedure of preparation (Adopt the given procedure to create your procedure) 2pts

1. The watch glass was weighed using the triple beam balance.
2. The 250ml beaker was calibrated to 120ml using purified water.
3. Calamine, Zinc oxide, and Bentonite were weighed and placed into the mortar and mixed
with the pestle until it was evenly distributed.
4. Sodium citrate was dissolved in some purified water and added to the powder to make a
smooth paste.
5. The paste was diluted and transferred to the beaker while rinsing the pestle and mortar
6. Glycerol and liquid phenol were added, then purified water to make up for the 120ml that
was calibrated.
7. The beaker was labeled approximately for inspection and Quality Control.

 Remember to state the correct name of equipment, the name and size of glass ware as well as the
exact quantities of each of the ingredients with appropriate unit of measure.

Physical and chemical properties of each of the ingredients used in preparing the products. 1.5pts

Calamine:
 Physical properties- pink to reddish brown colored powder
 Chemical properties- (Formula= Fe2O4Zn) is a mineral solution composed primarily of
zinc oxide with the addition of approximately 0.5 percent ferric oxide.
 Storage condition: Store it at room temperature (25°C), and in an airtight container.
Zinc oxide:
 Physical properties- odorless, white solid
 Chemical Properties- (formula= ZnO) is a common inorganic compound with a large
number of uses
 Storage condition- Store in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Keep container closed
when not in use. Extremely high or low temperatures and incompatible materials
Bentonite:
 Physical properties- natural clay with a fine, soft texture
 Chemical properties- (formula= Al2H2Na2O13Si4) cation exchange capacity, swelling capacity,
pH, rheological properties and some important foundry properties, such as the green and
dry compressive strengths, shatter index, wet tensile strength, compactability and
permeability.
 Storage conditions- Store in a cool place. Keep the container tightly closed in a dry and
well-ventilated place.
Sodium citrate:
 Physical properties- is the sodium salt of citric acid. It is white, crystalline powder or
white, granular crystals, slightly deliquescent in moist air, freely soluble in water,
practically insoluble in alcohol.
 Chemical properties- (formula= NaNO3) is a weak base in water.
 Storage conditions- Do not store near combustible materials. Store in a tightly closed
container.
Liquid phenol:
 Physical properties- appears as a colorless liquid when pure, otherwise pink or red.
 Chemical properties- (formula= C6H6O) consists of a phenyl group (−C6H5) bonded to a
hydroxy group (−OH).
 Storage conditions- store phenol in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from sources of heat
or ignition. Store separately from reactive or combustible materials and out of direct
sunlight.

Glycerin:
 Physical Properties: is a colorless, odorless liquid with a sweet taste. It is viscous at room
temperature and non-toxic in low concentrations
 Chemical properties: (formula= C3H8O3) it belongs to the class of organic compounds
known as sugar alcohols. These are hydrogenated forms of carbohydrate in which the
carbonyl group (aldehyde or ketone, reducing sugar) has been reduced to a primary or
secondary hydroxyl group.
 Storage condition: Keep in a cold (recommended storage temperature is 40ocelsius). Keep
separate from oxidants. Avoid extreme heat.
Purified Water:
 Physical property: colorless, odorless and tasteless. its physical state is liquid. The
freezing point is 00 C and the boiling point is 1000 C.
 Chemical property: (formula= H2O) it two atoms hydrogen (H2) linked to one atom
oxygen (O) by convent bonds.
 Storage condition: It is recommended for water to be stored at room temperature
(25°C/77°F). Exposure of pharmaceutical products to heat should be minimized. Avoid
excessive heat.

Uses of each of the ingredients in the product. 1pt

Calamine

 Uses: This medication is used to relieve pain, itching, and discomfort from minor skin
irritations such as poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. It also helps to dry the
oozing and weeping caused by irritation due to these plants.

Zinc Oxide
 Uses: is widely used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including dermatitis, itching due to
eczema, diaper rash and acne.

Bentonite

 Uses: Bentonite is used as filler in pharmaceuticals, and due to its absorption/adsorption

functions, it allows paste formation. Such applications include industrial protective creams,
calamine lotion, wet compresses, and anti-irritants for eczema.

Sodium citrate

 Uses: is a food additive which is mainly used in cough syrups and for neutralizing acids in urine.
It is also used as a pharmaceutical aid and as a food additive. It can also be used as a laboratory
reagent and as a chemical for treating water. This chemical is commonly found as trisodium
citrate which is used as an emulsifier, acidity regulator, calcium sequestrant, and preservative.
This sodium citric acid has wide usage because relatively it has the simplest chemistry.

Liquid Phenol

 Phenol has been used to disinfect skin and to relieve itching. Phenol is also used as an oral
analgesic or anesthetic in products such as Chloraseptic to treat pharyngitis. Additionally, phenol
and its related compounds are used in surgical ingrown toenail treatment, a process termed
phenolization.

Glycerin:

 Uses: Glycerin is used as a sweetener in syrups, lozenges, and as an excipient in eyewash

solutions. It may also be found in eardrop products, jellies and creams for topical use, in
expectorants for congestion, suppositories, and gel capsules. In additions, it is is a humectant, a
type of moisturizing agent that pulls water into the outer layer of your skin from deeper levels of
your skin and the air. In skin care products, glycerin is commonly used with occlusives, another
type of moisturizing agent, to trap the moisture that it draws into the skin.

Purified Water

 Uses: used as a solvent. it dissolves many of the ingredients that impart skin benefits, such as
conditioning agents and cleansing agents. Water also forms emulsions in which the oil and water
components of the product are combined to form creams and lotions.
Uses(s) of the compounded products. 1pt

 Calamine lotion is used to treat mild itchiness, also called pruritus. It can also help dry out oozing
skin irritations. This soothing pink lotion can help relieve the following skin conditions: reactions
to poisonous plants, such as poison oak, poison ivy, and poison sumac.
